“And those who argue that the RAAF isnt a small airforce, for a country the size of Australia with the massive coastline, its a small airforce.”

It’s not a small air force.

For this thread it’s a huge and easily accessible force. When security can be bypassed while hiding in a kangapouch it’s not a rarity by the standards expected here. I share a pair of Ghana pics just not to make a fool of myself ๐Ÿ™‚

Aren’t the Swedish NH90 designated Hkp 14? How are the Swedish NH90 doing in service?

Yes it is. My bad. I was simply translating what I read in Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.

    New choppers for Sweden

The Swedish parliament decides today to set aside 4,5 billion Swedish kronor (581 million USD) for the purchase of 15 new medium helicopters. A proven system is required and the hope is to have the helicopters operational as early as 2013. It seems the US Black Hawk is the preferred choice. The new helicopter will be designated HKP 14 in Swedish service.

    Gripen formation from the ground

The formation seen from the ground.

The 18 Gripen flypast seen from the ground. The aviation highlight of todays wedding in Stockholm. They made a lovely sound.

And for those of you wondering: we had a royal wedding here today as Swedens Crown Princess Victoria married to Prince Daniel. Crowds were estimated to half a million.

Hmmm. This IL-76 looks suspisciously like a C-17…

THe IPTC fields are reased in the pic you posted, but I’d bet it is one of the Bright Star photos by the USAF.

I believe you are right. My bad. Still a nice pic though.

When it comes to small nations building their own fighters, the only recent example is Sweden and to that I believe any other small nations efforts in this field should be compared.

An interesting note from Swedens Gripen project is the recommendations that FMV (Fรถrsvarets Materielverk – Defence materiel administration) came up with in 1981 (the partial report was handed in october 13th), regarding the economic viability of idigenous development and production of a new fighter. Their recommendations were as follows:

    * If less than 100 aircraft is to be purchased, the choise should be (a direct purchase of) F-16s

    * If 100-200 is to be procured a licence production of F-18s is the best option.

    * With more than 200-300 [sic!] aircraft an indigineous option is economical

When it came to final decisions in 1989-90 FMV claimed that at least 250-300 aircraft needed be produced to justify indigenous production.

With prices escalating I think it’s safe to say that indigineous production is only an option when you have an indigenous demand in exess of 300 fighters. Sweden had that at the time. Serbia today has not. One wonders if they could afford a tenth of those numbers.
