Thanks Bruce, when you say you have gauges, do you think you could post some photos of differing colours and year please, sort of a makeshift colour base… 😉
I dont honestly know – these were electrical instruments – I suspect the Whirlwind had capillary instruments.
Bruce
Boost is the Plumb Red colour as are the Oil Gauges, Rad Temp early are also the plumb red but the later Bakelite have a blue bezel, this is one we can’t find a good colour reference for, anyone help? Oil pressure either Yellow or Brown, although the Whirly images we have only show the Brown versions again it would be nice to see a good colour reference for the Yellow…
Here’s an example of our Boost Gauge for the 3D cockpit, recently made by a very talented chap whose helping us get our project finished…
Oop’s, sorry for the Hi-Jacking…
Hmmm… Would that be the same throughout the War? Does anyone have the picture of the colours used, I for one would like to see the variants…
Stuart…
Hi Rich…
Three things come to mind why there aren’t any British new builds like the P-51’s, Me262’s and FW190’s… Too much red tape, too much money, and the last being brought about by either one of the first two, or both – People can’t be a##ed… 😉
Indeed. But it was more the piston-engined types I was thinking of. They are never even close to realistic.
Moggy
Moggy, their getting there listen to this…

I imagine the Chinese fibre glass Lanc’s were built in much the same way as the SU27 I know alot would like to see any replicas built to the very inch an exact match, but it just isn’t every going to happen, the costs are just too prohibitive… I would not mind one little bit to see a full scale Whirly or any other lost aircraft built using these very same techniques, and if it could move under its own power using a Jag V12 or V8 or even a VW rather than a couple of Peregrines I would not care, just to see a full in your face, full scale accurate replica (Exterior) would be wonderful. And something that good for say 25 – 50k or even 100k would be so much more attainable than something costing 1.5million plus…
Stuart
There appears to have been a number of fakes floating about supposidly of the peregrine engine, i seen a complete set back last year at beaulieu car auto jumble so you are not the only one knocking out these labels.
😉 They would have a hard time taking mine home.:D
Pete, straightened out your plate…

More Peregrine plates.
D’oh… 😮
I don’t want to ask, but I must…
Where do they go, engine block? Rocker covers? Are they original or replicas… 🙂
Sorry vulture it’s just I’m not use to seeing Whirlwind bits…
Is there a story how you came to have them?
Stuart…
Stuart.
Attached pic of an original as per your PM.
All the plates I have seen have been very neatly stamped, so some sort of machine must have been involved.
I have not seen a hand-written one before.
I think you have got it spot-on.Sorry about the (lack of) quality, the camera, which is a Nikon, isn`t auto-focussing properly!
Pete
Brilliant Pete, it’s like you said the data was stamped with a machine, thank God I don’t have to do the data over again. That plate matches the one in the later Whirlies (See Below) from P6984 and after, so looks like I’ll have another one to replicate, but thanks to you it’s fairly easy… 😉

Thanks again Pete
Stuart
Fancy doing a virtual Hornet next??? 😀
David
Let us finish this little tart first before we start thinking about another… 😉 There’s still soooooo much left to do… 😮
Stuart…
Very nice. Keep going with this level of this level of quality, and your project will be a good one.
Thanks David, it’s projects like yours that has driven us to make this virtual Whirlwind something special, something that will bring a lost aircraft back to the aviation world for all to see…
Mind you saying that she’s been kicking and screaming and been nothing but trouble from the very start, anyone would think she didn’t want to be brought back… 😉
Stuart
very nice, might be more perfect than the originals though 😀
How did you do it, was it etched and then engraved?
Nither I’m afraid, it only exists in my computer… 😉 Though I’m really quite taken aback that you thought it was real, thanks Smirky…:D
No I’ve made this for a 3D model were making for a flight sim, this will be put into the cockpit of our virtual Whirlwind. We’re trying to make it as accurate as possible, this is only one piece of many hundreds that we need to make before we can fly her in the IL-2 Series Sim.
Stuart.
Pete, do you know after you said about the Peregrine I I took another close look… 🙂 I think you were right all along, so I will ammend that straight away, thanks Pete… 😉
I’ll give R-R Derby a bell next week and see if they still have the original artwork for their OLP’s, if not, I’ll see if I can get an email or postal address for Dr Alfred Price and ask him if he has the Pilots Notes photo that was used in his 2006 artical in the “Aeroplane”
Unless Tangmere1940 can ask him for me?
Thanks again for your help… 😉
Stuart
Pete
One thing to add is the mark number of the engine, (Peregrine I)I doubt it would have simply said “Peregrine”
I can only go by what I can make out from the original plate and as you can see there’s no Mk number present. Whats really annoying though is you can just make-out something above the “Peregrine” ?
Would the plate from a Hawker biplane with the Kestrel not be that design? What made you wonder if the plate for a twin would be different?
As regards to checking out earlier designs the big problem is getting hold of them, I think I will contact R-R Derby again and this time not ask for a “Engine Plate” but as Tangmere said an “Operation Limitation Plate” And see what answer I get… Ha!
Why did I think a plate for a twin would be different, ignorance mate, ignorance… 😉
Shame there’s not a book with them all in? Unless you know otherwise?
Of course if I could track down the original Pilots Notes photo’s for the Whirly it would be plain sailing, can I say that on an Aviation Forum?
Thanks to Rocketeer I’ve been in contact with RAF Handling Squadron, unfortunately they don’t have them either, but they are scanning me an original Pilot’s Note’s image to see if they it is clearer than the reprints I already have… Nice people.
Bloody Whirlwind… Ha!
Thanks Pete, I’ll keep you posted…
