I know you’re making a good point here but I think its stupid to bring China in every time when someone mentioning Vietnam. The world we living is now is rapidly changing and is more dangerous, so when a nation upgrade its armed forces doesn’t mean that it has to be aimed at one specific threat, but maybe for the sake of defence they just want something better. But in SE-Asia, I think it has more to do with prestige.

well, i only meantioned china because of the remarkable similarities in the types of combat ac the two purchased and the timing of these purchases. i never said china was the target of the build up, if u go back and have another look, u would see that i believe the exact opposit is true.

    Heres an update:

Russia given Vietnam a license to produce ‘IGLA’ MANPADS.

A deal signed with HAL for MiG-upgrades.

In August 2003 a deal worth $250 million was signed for the purchase of S-300PMU-1 air-defence, which will be delivered sometime in 2005.

12 missile boats (similar to the Molniya) are to be built in Vietnam, worth $120 million.

4 Sukhoi Su-30MK2 has been delivered and there are plans for 12-24 more.

    cheers for the info.

If you’re trying to make a point then you should get the facts properly, Vietnam never bought the MKK-variant, only the MK2 that was recently delivered.

i said i didnt follow vietnam’s military developments that closely. but even a casual glace reviels some interesting patterns of purchases.

Yes, the purchase of weapons to meet a precieved threat is one thing, but modernisation is another. Aside from buying the Sukhois, Vietnam have also signed a deal with HAL for the upgrade of MiG-21 jets, do you see pattern in that?

there are generally two main reasons for military modernisation, and these are to reduce costs or to increase combat capacity.

clearly adding new, much more capable and expensive (both to buy and to use) types, while upgrading older ac (hence planning to keep them on and not retire them) is not a cost saving measure.

every military ac type that has ever entered service has been upgraded over its service life. there are two main types of upgrades: a) life extention upgrades, and b) combat capabilities upgrades.

there is a general rule that determines what the AF in question is doing depending of what kind of upgrade they are undergoing.

an life estension upgrades usually means that the said AF sees little or no increase in its threat environment (like austraila with its F18s), meaning the existing types can soilder on for a little bit longer. hence there is no need to waste money on new, more capable types.

a combat capabilities upgrade is almost always forced upon AF in order to meet the changing (increasing) strengths of precieved adversaries so that it can offset the opponent’s own increases in capability and maintain the military balance that was there before.

so, vietnam’s military modernisation is not a cost saving measure on any count. meaning there is only one good reason for the modernisation – to meet the increases in military capacity of one or more precieved threats (unless, of course, u count showing off as a good reason).

oh…just because Vietnam is trying to modernise its armed forces dosen’t mean that it aimed at someone, why don’t you look at other ASEAN nations?…Indonesia bought new Sukhois for it’s air force, does that mean they try to aim it at someone? I don’t think so!

why dont u take another look? :diablo:

ASEAN is no EU, many member states have conflicts of interest with one or more of its fellow members (which is often over disputed territory). is it just a coincidence that as soon as one starts buying advanced russian jets, everyone else that can afford it is following suit? (but buying difference versons, ruling out the possibility that this is a co-operdinated move to try and form some kind of joint military force like the european rappid reasction force)

I still think they should consider a dual IRST/laser thing, have an IRST above the nose and a FLIR/laser designator below. You could make the whole thing integrated, but then you’d have a tough choice to make as to where to put it. Above the nose means you have to dive towards a target to use the laser, below the nose means you lose some of the IRSTs FOV.

well, a dual config would make more sense, but that’ll start making the flanker look ugly. 😀

one way around that could be to place the laser in the tail spike instead of another radar or landing chute. but this is only useful if u intend to use the plane only as a mid-high level bomber, as the laser would not have a good enough frontal view for nap-of-the-earth missions.

Wouldn’t that give you a limited FOV?

yeah, it might not be the best way to hang low-level nav pods, but u can easily get around the restrictions to the laser designator pod by planning the FOV limitations into the flight path and/or hanging two laser pods on either side of the ac instead of just one (its not like the flanker will suffer much as a result of one extra pod).

What are the best sources for information about China’s air forces? Is there a good, recently written, book on the subject?

thats the kinda thing the CIA has been looking for for decades. 😉

Damn, another good idea shot down… 🙁

what about putting them at the root of the wings where the wing meets the engine neccels? wouldnt obstruct airflow into the engines and also shouldnt need too much extra support to handle the extra weight.

    [QUOTE=Canpark]
bro… not everything got to do with China![/QUOTE

what, so u dont think there is a striking similarity between the way the two have purchased suhoi ac from russia?

    – china buys Su27Sk, not too long after, vietnam buys same ac.

    – china buys Su27UB trainers, not long after vietnam follows suit.

    – china buys Su30MKK, soon vietnam follows suit.

    – china buys Su30MK2, vietnam is about to, or already have bought the same ac.

(might have missed an order or two somewhere, but it doesnt matter that much)

is it just me, or is there a pattern developing here?

sure, china is not the centre of the universe (dispite what the ancient chinese thought), but surely one does not overlook the obvious simply to aviod meantioning china altogether.

Threat or no threat they only buy it for the sake of defence, why does people have to bring China into everything that involves Vietnam?

so, does the government of vietnam simply buy weapons for the sake of buying weapons or do they actually buy them to try and meet precieved threats and hence providing a viable defence?

im not trying to hi-jack the thread or steal ur thunder, so no need to be so touchy mate. im just asking a simple, and directly relevent question regarding vietnam’s defence spending – who is all this build up really aimed at?

PS, are u sure about vietnam’s flanker numbers? i dont follow vietnam’s military developments that closely, but im sure i’ve seen the odd report that states they got alot more flankers then just 12.

I dont think Vietnam can afford -MKI or MKM type fighter. and -MK2 is the current export standard for Su-30MK. Same basic fighter with integration of Anti-ship missile.

well, china’s 24 MK2s set them back over a billion big ones (but that might inculde things like weapons and spears, but there is no confirmed link to say one way or the other). dont think the MKI or MKM are that much more expansive. and for that kind of money, u can go european or american if u want.

besides, its not the first time vietnam has chosen the same ac type close on the heals of china.

guess they are no longer considering china as a major threat.

Chinese Russian AEGIS? Is that what they’re going to use the S-300F missiles they bought on?

well, apparently its supposed to be a collaberation between china and russia. but then the 052Bs was also supposed to be a collaberation, and was reffered to as the ‘chinese russian sov’ by some.

as for the S300Fs. well im not too sure. the chinese are working hard on their cell based VLS, and its already been instealled on a test ship. although the development hit difficulties and was delayed and the backup HHQ9s were used for the 052Cs, while the new stealthy frigates had to make do with HHQ7s, its hard to see the programme being so badly delayed at such a late stage to not have it ready for new ships (much bigger ones i might add) that are just starting construction.

i think the S300Fs are for more 052Cs that are already well into their construction somewhere (maybe dalian), and/or for study, or maybe even for the new sovs the PLAN ordered from russia.

Posted by xj12 at CDF regarding this new ship

    Oh…..and need translation…. 😮

And…..huh? Is this a fan-art or something that actually came from Kanwa?? Picked it up in the same post at CDF….

the article claims that kawan is saying that china is about to start construction of two new ‘chinese russian agis’ heavy destroyers (presumed in the 10,000 ton range). it is claimed that these will be the most advanced chinese ‘red agis’ warships to date (obviously).

but there is nothing to suggest the picture is anything but fan art thus far.

That’s the MiG-31M’s rear cockpit. The “sidestick” is for pointing the radar beam.

    cheers.

As an overseas Chinese, the lesson I learned on the Japanese atrocities of WW2 has been that every human has the potential to carry out extremely horrible deeds. Not just the Japanese. And so we will have to keep ourselves in check and remember WW2, not to condemn the Japs, but to remind ourselves never to commit such horrors. Their actions just showed us what horrors we (yes, you and me) are capable of.

Sadly, my impression of Mainland Chinese is that their lessons drawn was that Japanese are an ‘evil’ race, and so they continue looking at Japanese with hatred and distrust. In fact, after looking at some of the more extremist Mainland Chinese outbursts, I believe that my point of view is only confirmed – some of the Mainland Chinese are really morphing into the ‘vile beasts’ that they accuse the Japanese of. They cannot seem to get over the fact that WW2 happened 3 generations ago. (And China only recently accused Japan of having a Cold War mentality, who’s the one having a WW2 mentality, I wonder?)

its pure stupidity to judge an entire nation based on the views of a few ppl (unless these ppl are elected leaders of that nation).

the vast majority of chinese dont hate the japanese. they just dont trust them or dislike them. and there is good reason to that.

as the old saying goes, ‘once bitten twice shy’. china has been ‘bitten’ badly by the japanese, and the japanese has given china little reason to warm to, or even trust them ever since.

most ppl in japan seems to get the idea that if they just forget about what they done, then soon everyone else will forget as well, and a few ppl like u are proving them right.

just trying to sweep the thing under the carpet and forget about it is not the action of someone who is truly sorry for what they’ve done, nor is it the best way to ensure that future generations do not make the same mistakes.

most chinese dislike the japanese not because they hate them for what was done in WWII ( because extremely few ppl that saw the attrocities first hand are still alive), but because there is zero evidence that many japanese truely feels sorry for what was done, or even feel that what happened was wrong. and most chinese dont trust the japanese because we feel they are capable of doing it all again.

i’ve studied in china, and know first hand what is being taught in chinese classrooms, and its not the ‘all japanese are bad’ brainwashing western and japanese media tries to suggest, just a collection of facts (the numbers might be different from western history books, but the events are pretty much the same, i’ve checked.). its the facts that are making some chinese anti-japanese, not the method of teaching.

if there are a small proportion of the chinese population that are extreme anti-japanese, then thats not china’s fault. its japan’s.

unidentified cockpit, claimed to be off a chinese ac.

it looks pretty old judging by the wear and tear evident, but appears to have been upgraded with a glass cockpit. i assume/hope that this is the rear cockpit because of the extremely poor visibility, but the F16 style side-stick would rule out all the remaining chinese possibilities (that we know off).

any ideas as to which plane this belongs to?
