“You’re forgetting the radar itself, radar support structure, and accompanying equipment which all weigh a significant amount- the AWACS can probably maneuver as well as a pregnant cow.”
yeah, but surely not as much as 300+ passengers with their baggage.;) the radom might cause problems areadynamically, but it shouldnt effect the manoverability of the plane that much.
“This missile should be large enough to shoot down, i say put a Goal Keeper on the back of a AWACS!”
the vibrations from the goalkeeper firing would take out most of the sensitive radar and compter equipment on the AWACS and might even rip the fuselage apart without proper reinforcement. but a very original idea nonetheless.:)
matt:
“When you say Fast manouvers plawolf. how fast do you think the AWACS can turn ? “
AWACS are just basicaly converted airliners but with much reduced weight, so i’d imagine they can turn pretty fast as the airline flight displays at some air shows are pretty impressive.
“Hasnt Israel already produced Decoy UAV’s ? Were these not the first ever UAV’s ? (back in the 60’s )”
those were the most basic types, just some remote controled planes with radar reflectors glued on. missile guidence have evoved a great deal since then.
do AWACS currently have towed decoys? the only ones i know of are mounted on fighters, and pilots still eject chaff and flares and do hard turning high G manovers to try and shake the missile.
but how would the decoy attract the missile in the first place?
the missile sees two ‘targets’ moving straight and level, none are doing much monovering, so the ‘lock on lead’ programme cant decide which is the fake, the missile ‘takes a guess’ and goes for one. since the planes are flying straight and level, the missile is almost garenteed to hit what it aimed for, and its only luck that decides which ‘target’ it decides to go for. not a very comforting defensive system.
😀 i just printed what u wroten. so there is a paper copy of it. 😉 but i dont have a scanner so i cant show u my copy. but u can always just print out ur own copy and have a look at it, it says exactly what u just written. 😀 :p

not a terribly good idea to just fly straight and level when there’s a missile comming at u. and besides, if neither a/c does much manovering, then the ‘lock on lead’ programme will not be used and the missile will have a 50/50 chance of hitting the right target.
most man controled UAVs have terrible views, so i wouldnt advise flying one of those anywhere near another a/c like an AWACS. and besides, even the most bair born man controled UAVs costs millions, and u sure to loose it if ur successful in ur use of it. a pair of fighters with AIM-9s could cost a few grand to operate and u can get the fighters back.
not that simple, the UAV will have to fly close to the a/c its protecting or else the missile might ignore it completely; it cant fly too close or it might do the job of the enemy missile instead. and do remeber that itself and the AWACS will be doing highly unpredicatble and fast manuvers to try to throw off the incoming missile at this time. maned a/c would be hard pressed to do all that, and i strongely doubt that current UAV guidence tech is up for the job.
and besides, UAVs with endurance that can match AWACS’ have got to be the size of preditors, which costs millions apiece. add the cost of the new nav computers and sensors needed to do the job of imitating the AWACS intelegently and safely, and the bill might easily run into tens of millions. might be cheaper to just assign a fighter or two to each AWACS and have them go out and try to shoot down any incoming missiles.
which would cost a great deal and take years and years to develop, the new programme should be ready in months at the earliest, and can be used to upgrade pretty much all current AAMs and SAMs.
this might be a little silly, but couldnt a very easy and seemingly foolproof way to netreulise towed decoy be to just have the missle lock onto the lead target and ignore the rest? towed decoys cant be at the front of the a/c towing it. (no matter how the a/c changes course, the towed decoy will always follwo suit, a computer programme to analyise and compair the movement of all the ‘targets’ and finding teh lead target shouldnt be that hard to write).
when did i say ‘film’? all those were written on paper i’ll have u know.

does it have bruce willius in it? he’s in alot to stories with numbers in the tiltes (the fifth element, the sixth sence etc).
