That would actually be quite attractive on the international market, and not just for the Pakistanis. The South Koreans, Swedes, Turks, and Indonesians all have a F-35 competitor on the drawing board. There’s clearly a market for such an aircraft.

I don’t think CAC could take on much more, with the J20, J10B and UAV projects they have running, without having to divert resources from the above high priority programmes.
SAC is rumoured to be still working on their own 5th gen out of their own money in a bid to win the PLA over. So far, the PLA are not biting, but if they really want a J20-lite before 2025 or 2030 without risking delaying the J20, SAC may be the best bet.
Although I just can’t see the PLA being that interested in a stealthy mini-Flanker.

PLAAF is not short on money or ambitions. (too ambitious may be).
The amount of programs they have laid out is huge is width as well as depth.They are defintely going for a F-35 class, the question is will they wait or will they start in parallel of J-20. all signs point to 2015-20 time frame for a decision between SAC and CAC product. I hope they don’t get sucker into an unimaginative silent flanker product by SAC.
PLAN wants a smaller (SH sized) 5th gen+ fighter than Su-33 to replace J-15/Su-33. their carrier is not that big. that could be the spoiler as their budget concious MacNamara style headman would want common platform across service
Well I really hope they don’t go overboard as the US did with the F35.
There is simply no need for an all 5th gen fighter force. Even J10A/Bs would be overkill for a lot of the missions and deployments the PLAAF’s current fighter force is engaged in.
If they really want to keep up the numbers, even the JF17 or armed L15 would be more than enough to act as a filler.
I can see the PLAN wanting a 5th gen carrier fighter, and the J20 may well be too big to be practical, and a single engined J20-lite may be a good seller internationally. Pakistan would be breaking out the bubbly if China really is developing such a plane.
If they do make such a plane, I hope they would not make the same mistakes as the F35 by forcing a common airframe on services with vastly different needs and requirements (although they won’t have a STOVL version, hopefully), so even if they do go for a common airframe, it shouldn’t cause as many problems as the F35 suffered.
Better that they develop a dedicated naval single engined J20-lite, and allow the PLAAF to buy more J20s. Although if the J20-lite is only to be for the navy, they may well prefer a twin-engined design with a WS13 class 5th gen engine for added safety.
Doubt it. US and russian spy satelites have most likely monitored the Chinese air fields and proving grounds closely for years. An hypotetical earlier test flight should have been detected -and leaked to media- in one way or the other.
And they can keep one, let alone all, of those installations monitored 24/7?
Satellite overpass timetables are easy to establish for a country like China. If they want to keep something secret, the chances anyone would catch it with a spysat is slim to be generous.

Been away for a while because of RL commitments, so appologies for the delay in responding.
Bearing in mind the other reasonably firm clues we have, that is actually by far the most likely explanation, since I do not believe that the engines have been changed – so only a minor repaint involved.
I think this ‘minor repaint’ fantasy has been thoroughly enough debunked by others already.
The temperatures required for the engine petals is far beyond the tolerances of mere paints. That is why engine petals are never painted even when camo paint has been thoroughly applied to all other parts of the plane.
If special materials is applied to the petals, it is for heat resistance or other practical purposes. Which is why the entire petals are treated uniformly. It is completely unprecedented for ‘paint’ to only be applied to part of the petal, so the coloring is also representative of the shape.
From the shape, we can see that it is a completely newly designed engine exhaust in place instead of merely a new lick of paint.
I think a question you need to apply to all of your ‘theories’ is the ‘why’ question.
It is simplicity itself to come up with any random theory or explanation for anything. But the only theories or explanations worthy of even being mentioned, let alone debated, should be the ones that at the very least makes sense.

The nozzles on the J-20 have at best a passing resemblance to the WS-10. I don’t know why you bring up the J-11B, I never made any comment on it at all. Why would you dress up an aircraft (or any detail aspect of it)? Well, for a publicity stunt, of course.
I bring up the J11B because as with that aircraft, the only visible indication that a different engine is used is the different exhaust petals.
How can you take two almost identical cases and accept one has a different engine and insist another merely has a new lick of paint?

Because as has been pointed out, the idea of painting engine nozzles is inherently silly and completely unprecedented. I cannot think of a single case where this has ever happened before.
There are also a number of other important indicators, such as President Hu himself presenting an award for a major breakthrough in engine development a matter of weeks before the J20 was shown.
There has also been other, less official reports, of special WS10As being delivered to CAC. At first, everyone assumed they were for integration with J10A/Bs, now a new possibility has presented itself.

Exactly – if it was moved by heavy transport plane you’d need an An-124 (I doubt the USAF would lend a C-5 or C-17), that’s what was used to bring the T-50 prototypes to Moscow. I doubt you see An-124s at Chengdu day in day out, so you’d imagine that would alert any observers to the fact that something is up.
They could be moving it by truck or rail, but that’s 600+km journey which would take several days to complete and I suspect you’re overestimating the degree to which disassembly would be practical. All in all, an unnecessarily complex operation.
Again, I cannot help but wonder if I am wasting my time.

If they were to move the prototypes, it would be for actual testing. They are not going to make it easy for foreign powers to track its progress. If they moved it covertly to a busy airport/rail station, they could send the planes to one of many suitable test locations without drawing too much attention to where that is.
It would be a big ask for anyone to have enough spysats to keep one such location under constant observation for any length of time, never mind having to find out where it is first.
And that is a ‘worst case scenario’ of assuming they do not yet have the confidence for the plane to make the trip under their own power. This may be the case with the WS10 equipped prototype, but the Al31 equipped one may be deemed to be able to make the trip. If not in one go, than in stages at least.

The test instrumentation could easily be stored internally in the weapons bays, or have been temporarily removed for the purposes of the ‘publicity stunt’. Remember all the bare yellow patches all over the Al31 equipped prototype?
Secondly, as I have already pointed out, different prototypes are built for different stages of the test programme. If the WS10 equipped prototype is indeed a new built example, it may well be intended for something other than just basic flight testing.

Not at all. As I predicted, you can only explain them away by making additional assumptions beyond these seven (reasonably confirmed) points or using circular logic. And you have failed to address what those ground runs were all about (which, after all, involved both nozzle variants).
If you spent half as much time actually thinking about your points as you do trying to score points, I dare say you would have made more convincing arguments.
1. As Deino says, we have no confirmation whatsoever that a second aircraft really exists.
But we did see two planes with different engine nozzles as well as other differences, such as one having sections still in yellow primer while the other was fully camoed up.
It is not impossible that they changed the engines and painted those panels in the short time plane was in the hanger. But very unlikely and there is no rational explanation I could think off why they would do a high speed taxi test with one set of engines (or engine nozzles if you insist, however unlikely that is) and then do the same taxi run and first flight with another engine so soon after.
It would also be extremely unlikely that they would design a plane that could have its engines changed so quickly and easier, and even more unprecedented that they would perform such a major change so soon before the first flight.
What you are suggesting is statistically possible, but I feel my suggestion is significantly more probable.
2. As Deino says, we have no reliable confirmation that the engines powering the first flight are anything other than dressed-up AL-31FNs.
You can dismiss all the pictures of WS10 equipped J11Bs as ‘dressed up Al31s’ if you want, but my question is why would they want to ‘dress up’ an AL31, especially if its just the first flight?
On the first flight, all you care about is getting the plane in the air and back on the ground again safely.
Little operational details like stealthy engine nozzles are way way down the to-do list.
If they have ‘dressed up’ an AL31, then that would support my theory that the programme is in a more advanced stage since they have time to start worrying about operational details now.
3. The aircraft flew for only 20 minutes and does not seem to have even retracted its landing gear. If the project was so advanced, why not even do an afterburner take-off (pretty spectacular but low-risk), for example?
Well if they are first flying with a new engine, and an airframe that has not been fully tested out and certified, it would be an exceedingly foolhardy thing to do such pointless airshow stunts just to play to the back row. Pushing a new engine you are just first flying with for the first time is also extremely silly.
The fact that they did the first flight in such a professional manner is a credit to them that they resisted the temptation to ‘put on a show’ just to wow some fanboys.
They are allowing us a peek at the proceedings, but they are not going to put on a song and dance just because we are watching.
4. It is admittedly a bit hard to tell from available imagery, but #2001 did not seem to be nearly as heavily instrumented as T-50 prototype #51 was.
Even more so when there is clear evidence that the better quality images have been touched up to remove some details.
The lack of visible test instruments would also support my theory that the programme is at a more advanced stage. Especially if 2001 is a new built prototype, and different prototypes are built to do different parts of the test programme and would have slightly different configurations as a result.
5. Why, if it had already flown previously, did no reports leak?
Because the Chinese are not completely incompetent and could actually keep things under wraps if they wanted? Did anyone hear real time about the J10A’s, J10B’s, J11B or J15’s first flights?
6. Similarly, why did no reports of a ferry flight to Yanliang or suspicious cargo movements out of Chengdu surface?
How exactly would anyone prove ‘suspicious cargo movements’? Or even tell that apart from normal industrial traffic? They are not going to put the prototypes on a tank transporter with a tarp on top and lug it across China. If they are going to move it, it will be broken down into parts and trucked to a rail station/airport in normal freight trucks or loaded into a heavy transport plane at CAC.
If they are moving them by truck, there is no way anyone looking on would know what was being transported.
But if the prototype that first first flew is still sitting in a CAC hanger in Chengdu, that would actually further strength my case that the programme is more advanced since they are not in any hurry to get the plane away to do more tests.
There could be no question that the J20 is a top top priority project for China, so there is no way they would pat themselves on the back and start taking it easy after the first flight.
Look at the Russians, they put on their PAKFA first flight PR show and then flew the thing to the test centre to start work straight away.
If the Chinese are not doing the same, that is a strong indication that there is at least one other flying prototype doing the basic flight testing, and they are doing other things with this one.
Individually, almost all of the above points can be explained away, but taken all together they make your hypothesis seem very unlikely. Remember Mr. Occam and his bathroom implement?

I think the British would be one of the main driving forces behind the Indian bid. If the Indians bite, the RN will have in effect, a naval Typhoon option for their carriers without having to pay any development costs and also make a hefty profit and keep a great many jobs safe for years to come.
If the Indians do go for the Typhoon, it would be interesting to see how that would impact on the RN F35 dealings.
Although I am not sure if the Indians would want to go for a naval Typhoon since they are already committed to the naval mig and the Rafale is already fully carrier capable and ready off-the-shelf today and offers pretty much the same capabilities as a naval Typhoon would.

Aren’t the Chinese building a conventional missile to hit carriers? No reason the Japanese or Koreans with US help couldn’t build one with a similar CEP.
The difference is the Chinese have been working on all sorts of ballistic missiles for decades.
To suggest the South Koreans or Japanese could achieve what took decades and generations of cumulative R&D to develop on their very first attempt is fanciful at best.
Just look at the trouble the Japanese and South Koreans have been having with their space launch programmes to see how much of a technological challenge rocketry is and how being advanced in some fields do not automatically makes you a master in others, especially when you have relatively little experience in that field.

BTW, I was only half joking with my remark about showing off to Robert Gates though. You don’t gather much useful test data in less than 20 minutes and the aircraft did not seem to be instrumented particularly extensively – no strain gauges all over the place, unlike the T-50. The apparent lack of follow-up flights so far lends further credence to the theory that this maiden sortie was mainly a publicity stunt, not the start of the actual test campaign (yet).
That’s only one way to look at it. It is just as, if not more likely that the J20 programme is actually a great deal more developed than that staged public ‘first flight’ would suggest.
It would be completely unprecedented for the Chinese to do an actual first time ever first flight so publicly. It would also see illogical to have two prototypes, one with AL31 and one with WS10G only to first fly with the WS10G. The entire purpose of using a mature engine like the AL31 would be to reduce risk with the first flight.
If they were confident enough to actually first fly the thing with the WS10G, then there would be little point in putting AL31 in another plane.
The ‘first flight’ we were allowed to see is very likely to be the first flight with a Chinese engine. But it is quite probable that the airframe itself had already gone through extensive flight testing previously using the AL31.
As for ‘no follow up flights’, well surely you are smart enough to realize that the PLA can keep a secret if it wants to?
Now that they have done their PR stunt and showed the world that the J20 is real and flies, there is no need to further parade the things in front of the lenses.
The J20 prototypes would very likely have been moved west to the remote flight test centers in the deserts where the real work can continue away from praying eyes and population centers in case something does go wrong.
