Didnt they use the Harrier to validate the testing model they developed?. It was my understanding that Qinetiq modelled F-35B and Harrier then validated the Harrier data with the trials. Harrier data checked out ergo confidence in their model for F-35B.
Yep Jonesy QinetiQ’s VAAC Harrier did SRVL trials on the Charles de Gaulle:

To be honest you might not even need the catapult just run the drone off the Ski jump. On the other hand you might need a catapult to meet payload and range requirements.
Well it comes to UAV on QE class we need to take our minds back to what the thinking was prior to 2010 SSDR.
People seem to have forgotten EMKIT/EMCAT, the idea was at some point to mount an EMCAT rail (maybe on some trainable mount to the side/ or on deck) to launch UAV. Recovery would presumably into a net, unless the landing approach speed is slow enough why not have it land conventionally.
Well looking at all the threads recently set up using a forum members name as part of the title it has all been done by the same person…
Change the name of the threads and maybe a ticking off for the culprit in a pm please mods!
Seems rather petty to me! Subject only…drop the names!
Oh you beat me to that!:D
Read the rubbish that lot put on line. Much of it is easily demonstrated to be false, e.g. Sharkey Ward makes claims about the performance of Tornado in the 1990-91 Gulf War which contradict not only the official accounts, but those of the Tornado crews, ground crews, journalists who were on the spot, & everyone else who (unlike him) actually had first hand knowledge. According to him, Tornado crews were incompetent & cowardly, & that combination caused the majority of their losses. To draw this conclusion, he has to change the dates, places, & causes of losses. There’s exactly one (a ‘ladder’ explosion of bombs dropped too low for their fusing) he’s right about, & IIRC he blames that on the air crew, because that fits his argument, when it from what I’ve read it could have been a fusing mistake or fuse fault.
The rest of their garbage is of similar (low) quality. Evidence is selectively & misleadingly reported. Apples are compared with oranges. Often, outright untruths are told (though I think the authors don’t realise it – they’re too blinkered). As someone who is pro-Navy, I find the Phoenix Think Tank embarrassing. The RAF thinks it’s wonderful, because it discredits the pro-Navy lobby. The RAF can point to it & say “See? This is the sort of rubbish that admirals put out. How can you take any notice of them?”
Agreed I am also pro navy (actually pro all services) and see the problems with the Phoenix Think Tank…actually they make Carlo Kopp’s Air Power Australia think tank look balanced and reasonable.
To add to your post, Sharkey is pretty much Persona non Grata within the Royal Navy as well. He has attacked other (often better) pilots in the service, the admiralty and highly criticised 800 NAS during the Falklands war (ignoring the minor fact that 800 NAS got more kills!). His temper tantrum at an RAF base on his return to the UK is legendary! After the war he is regarded as an arch bull$hitter especially in respect of Harrier performance and capabilities, his contempt for the RAF is well known and high ups in the MOD regarded him as “somebody not to trust national secrets with”!
I actually linked his article about RAF GW1 Tornado operations on the eGoat website…to say that he will probably need a stab vest if he ventures anywhere near an RAF base now is in no doubt!
I have no problem with critics of the RAF, Typhoon and decisions made by the powers that be…on the other hand I have little time for people who have an axe to grind due to petty light vs dark blue bias.
I have an image in my mind of matelots chasing a Lightning down the deck chocks in hand with it rolling to the top of the Ski Jump cartoon style before it rolls back in the other direction scattering crew in all directions!
Then again:
Well maybe, you don’t get bolters with SRVL making need for an angled deck less then again if the brakes fail on an approaching it could lead to the F35b coming to a sticky ending over the ski jump. An angled deck in that scenario means it would plop into the sea rather then have the carrier run it over…an event that has happened in the past. Then again how quick is the lightning going on an SRVL approach…frankly we need to see how the tests go with the ski jump in America. Spray the area infont of the ski jump with water then get the F35B to do an SRVL approach, landing at the same spot it would on the carrier without the brakes and see what happens!:diablo:
Of course the silver lining of the JCA side of the project when it comes to F35B is they intend it to be the next F-16. So we could possibly see it in low level production thirty years after they hit service. That dovetails with the midlife point of the carriers meaning the airframes initially purchased could be replaced by further F35 that serve right through to when the ships are retired.
Some very interesting information there Geoff_B, thanks.
Geof_B come on all the talk was blowtorches through deck! 😀 Paint damage is a far lesser issue, push come to shove they paint the deck more often. As for people being blown off, well as the video shows things don’t seem all that bad…the solution in the end might just be adjusted deck handler training to ensure they are not standing in risky places. We will only work that one out when we have QE and an F35B to play with.
I am more worried about bring back and having enough fuel to land back safely at the end of a mission.
In the proposed defense budget the uSAF had to cut several “nice to have” things to keep the more important stuff funded.
Remember, the USAF is not an airline…if they use a larger than necessary aircraft to get an urgent mission done, no big deal…they don’t have to worry about profit and loss.
There is always more money..tax money…available. :rolleyes:They’d rather use more fuel and have higher flying costs for the few missions than spend a lot of money on a new airframe.
These aircraft were for the US-Army replacing the elderly Shorts Sherpa, the reason the Army needs this aircraft is because the USAF has consistently failed to transport the loads the Army needs. The USAF does not want the Army to do fixed wing as has been proven with the C-7 (and the A-10 Warthog). The USAF plays politics and takes these aircraft off the Army saying “We can do what you want nooooo problem” then promptly cancels the program using all the same excuses that were made in the 1960’s with the C-7 Caribou!
The USAF didn’t need to play politics and take these aircraft, if they had been an Army asset the money would of come out of the Armies budget meaning the USAF wouldn’t of had to worry about having to cut several “nice to have” things to keep the more important stuff funded! Of course the USAF needs all the money it can find to try and get that boondoggle of an F22 to actually work properly without killing the pilots whilst taxing on the ground or just generally falling to pieces!
RAF accused over multi-billion Voyager contract
The RAF may be paying billions of pounds too much for its new, air-to-air
refuelling Voyager aircraft, the BBC has discovered.(No change there then )
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18020809
Since when did the RAF buy their own aircraft ?
Good journalism there BBC! Its only taken you this long to report something that everybody else has been saying for years.
PFI meant they could back load the payments and avoid upfront spending!
I would also add only for a few seconds as well, the second it hits deck the pilot will chop thrust.
The whole blow torching thing has been blown out of all proportion and I think got into the public psyche due to an unfortunately ill-informed talking heads sketch on Bremner, Bird and Fortune. Then Carlo Kopp and his fan chorus latched onto the issue keeping it nice and alive.
The sketch:

The truth, F35B landing on an aircraft carrier…no holes in the deck, no crewman blown over the side by Hurricane force winds!:
