In the end you dodge the rafale and typhoon comparison by saying the RAF has the capability overall (with tornadoes). Try to explain that to an export customer…He is buying an aircraft, not the RAF.
In the end impressing export customers is nice but not the primary job of the RAF! The UK has Tornados with full integration of the right kit to attack ground targets. The RAF has barely enough Typhoon to maintain UK and Falklands QRA, they are having to draw aircraft from 17(R) squadron which is the Typhoon OEU to support missions over Libya. This is due to Tranche 2 aircraft going to Saudi Arabia rather then the RAF.
In the end this isn’t a pi$$ing contest with the French! As I have already said Mirage 2000 is heavily tasked with strike and CAP missions as well as the Rafale.
Well the Falklands government operates two fishery protection vessels to help protect an EEZ.
Considering Fishing a significant income for the Falklands government its important to protect it from poaching. The Argentines don’t recognise the EEZ but generally respect it. On occasion the Fishery protection vessels will have confrontations with Argentine vessels both civilian and military who slip into Falkland waters. Usual reaction is to send the QRA birds at MPA and punch out a few flares over the uninvited guest. Or if the RN protection vessel is close by they might go and explain matters to the interlopers.
Also on occasion (usually when the Argentine government wants to rattle a sabre or get some good press) the Argentines will sail a warship right into Falklands waters and head towards the Islands and then start to stop Falklands licenced trawlers saying they are operating illegally in Argentine waters. Again the QRA birds and guardship will sort it out.
Of course one of the reasons that the UK operates an Ice configured vessel is about maintaining territorial claim in the Antarctic but she does very much do things.
Supporting Science and the Antarctic survey is an important part of the job as well as working with the Falklands guard ship and fisheries protection vessels.
Well Icebreakers need a rather sturdy hull, in respect of other in service vessels Endurance is fairly young.
The Argentine ARA Almirante Irízar which is in refit after the fire she suffered in 2007 was launched in 1978. If you want extreme when it comes to age the Russian (albeit British built) Krasin was launched during the First World war and retired in the 1990’s!
Yes that is what I am thinking as well Geoff_B, there just isn’t something available for sale or lease that has the features required. The main issue is lack of hanger on anything available! I have spent significant time looking myself and aside from the less then ideal Polarbjorn there just isn’t anything even close to suitable.
So I think lease Polarbjorn without a name change for three years and go without a helicopter flight. Then look at a deep (as in totally gut her) refit of Endurance. That means they can install systems and plant more in keeping with the training of the crew, sort out the accomodation that was always a problem and install some decent air conditioning so she can transit south far easier.
Apparently according to comments on Rumration the process of sending her back to the UK through warmer climes was causing serious wear to her machinary not to say deep uncomfort for her crew!
Sorry guys it took me a few days to post a link to this article as it was so badly written it made my blood boil!
Basically the anti carrier brigades proxies in the press are at it again. A rambling poorly researched article that again suggests the carriers should be cancelled! He comes up with the idea that if they were cancelled money would free for up for a Nimrod replacement. Of course totally ignoring the fact that the cancellation fees would be more then actually finishing them and totally destroy whats left of the UK’s ship building capability.
With stunning comments like:
The biggest UK procurement project, the 21 billion pound Typhoon Fighter Aircraft (Eurofighter), is well advanced with several squadrons already operating what will be the backbone of the RAF, replacing ageing Tornados and Jaguars.
If he had done his research properly he would find the Jaguars are long gone!
He also suggests that Type 45 is perfect for air policing over Libya, of course ignoring the minor fact that 1) Its not fully capable of operating its primary weapon system yet. 2) How do you make sure your not shooting down the wrong target.
He even had the b@lls to write this guff in the comments:
Many hours of research and good old-fashioned journalism are my principle qualification for writing this story.
HACK!
Anyway make sure you have a stiff drink before reading!
Frankly its academic now, whilst BAE Systems could relaunch production of Type 45 for an export customer it would be at a significant cost. Production of long lead items would have to be restarted and in the end other countries can undercut the UK when it comes to high end warship production. The Type 45 is pretty much unique to UK requirements and has plenty of gold plating.
No idea, I suppose you can cut out development cost.
The problem is there are certainly some cheaper options out there. Certainly the Spanish F-100 class is very attractive as born out by export sales.
Certainly is or was! They tried to sell eight and nine to Saudi Arabia who didn’t bite. They then pulled the plug on it and settled on six.
I get a vibe that if the Saudis had gone for a couple of Type 45 the UK might well of got two extra themselves after satisfying the export order.
Nah the RAF bagged Atlas for their new a400.
Well not entirely surprising the French have more of Rafales multirole capability stood up. For the UK the Tornado is the far more logical platform for strikes at the moment even if it had more of the Typhoons multirole capability stood up.
Don’t forget that the Mirage 2000 is heavily involved as well, its a case of using the best available platforms for the job rather then favour the new Eurocanard types. Certainly Dassault and EADS will be very happy that their new types are involved in some form.
Yes only bid! Whilst I have a hunch that many in the RN would prefer Australia to have Largs Bay (well except those who don’t want her to go at all!) it will be down to who gives the best price!
It is true that a hot transfer of a Bay class will solve many of the RAN’s problems when it comes to amphibious capability.
Don’t know about Saudi AMRAAM status but they don’t use ASRAAM as far as I know. They decided on IRIS-T for their Typhoon squadrons.
WOW wow!!
Libya is now a live ground testing facility for new weapons
I thought Kashmir was a testing ground for new weapons?
An ex admiral was just interviewed on BBC News. He was very cynical about the use of Tornado to attack Libya, he was of the opinion that the Tornado is being used to save it from defence cuts. I don’t entirely agree (except that I am sure the RAF is very keen to show its capabilities in the face of PR11) but the interservice fighting is kicking in again! I wonder how long before we get an ex general talking about boots on the ground?
