T3B is dead now! It means less capability pure and simple. You could keep availability by keeping less Typhoon in storage but that would result in massively reducing the fleet fatigue life. Or cut down the commitments even further!

Wow thats a serious mistake! I would understand if they had given you the option Su-25 as it does look similar to the A-9 but A-10 …geeez:mad:

From what I understand of aircraft recognition for most squadrons its “Learn what aircraft the RAF operate…its in the blue book or on the big poster and pass the exam”! In respect of the wing aircraft recognition competitions the officers running it tended to have a chip on their shoulder about it all….”These teenagers couldn’t possibly know more then me…I went to RAF Akrotiri once and took some pictures” types. If you tried to engage them in conversation about the subject they tended to be very dismissive…heck I got told off once by one of those types at a camp. There was a picture of the British Aerospace EAP technology demonstrator on the wall of a room and the officer goes “have a look its the new Eurofighter which the RAF will start flying soon”, I politely said “Sorry sir thats the EAP technology demonstrator not Eurofighter”. Rather then let me letting me explain why and taking an interest that one of his cadets had learnt something he gave me a very public dressing down in front of the other cadets about how wrong I was…nuts!

Yep the ATC was an odd experience, personally I don’t think it helps recruitment into the RAF as much as they like to portray! Five years of dealing with wannabe RAF reserve officers totally put me off joining the RAF – decided to go into Uni instead! Not to say I didn’t find very good officers who cared about the needs of the cadets in their care and ensuring an enriching program (I always regarded Squadron Leader Bonfield who was a senior officer in Sussex wing ATC in high regard in that respect) but I met just too many with an “I’m in the RAF wannabe chip on their shoulder” trying to make smoke and light about rather then be good leaders and role models of teenagers.

I must admit I didn’t really help my chances when I decided to correct mistakes in the Wing Aircraft recognition competition (at the age of 14 🙂 ), putting aside the picture of a Kawasaki KV-107 but only giving the choice of a Boeing Vertol CH-46 (I suppose that is splitting hairs) they put up a picture of Mig23BN but only gave a choice of a Mig27…come on there are distinct recognition differences! Alas aircraft recognition isn’t going to give you that extra stripe!

ATR-72 & CN-235 both have the Seaspray 7500E AESA radar as an option (bought by Italy & Ecuador, as well as the USCG for C-130). That has a high degree of commonality with the smaller Seaspray 7000E to be fitted to the AW159 Wildcat. Commonality with new aircraft seems preferable to commonality with the types they’ll replace.

We could, on the other hand, perhaps have the Searchwaters meant for the MRA4s fitted to whatever type is bought, thus saving the cost of new radars.

Question is how big are the Searchwater 2000 that were to be installed in the MRA4? If they fit it would entail a good saving as long as they can get it to happily talk with the mission system. The CAE MAD detectors purchased for the MRA4 as well, they are brand new, never used and they would fit no problem. You could also use the Nighthunter optics turret but I bet the navy would prefer Wescam MX15HD.

Sorry you just don’t get it do you.

If we don’t have the ships then contingency plans won’t work will they.

I still don’t think you get my point mate.

A crisis has developed and a ship has been deployed! In the end the more you cut ship numbers the more difficult it is to respond to this kind of crisis. The RN was overstretched on deployments even before SDSR!

This crisis again shows the foolishness of cutting ship numbers, that a ship being cut is being used makes the point even better!

So I do see this having significance!

Back to the subject at hand if the UK has to use naval power to evacuate citizens HMS Bulwark is on Sea trials at the moment off Plymouth. OK her crew hasn’t gone through FOST yet but cometh a crisis and its amazing how the navy can rise to the situation! Its happened before, HMS Ocean was used in a crisis whilst she was still in sea trials with the Navy.

    Thats not my point.

My point is an asset that is to be retired ahead of time is now being used is a crisis! Yes its luck that Cumberland was close by but that doesn’t change the perverse irony of it all.

My issue is in SDSR she was regarded as surplus to requirements and the predicted defence scenario of the next decade negates the need for hulls in the water (whatever hulls doesn’t matter). What do we find now but most European navies scrambling to get vessels into the area!

Don’t worry not looking for an argument:D

Its an interesting line of thinking.

Ah but the commonality of the CN-235 is in its airframe rather then the systems. Any systems fit would be fairly unique to the UK but the stuff that keeps it in the air is common, large numbers of the aircraft are in service around the world in all sorts of roles civilian and military alike. The S3 are gathering dust at AMARG, the same goes for P3 which would probably need a SLEP for the airframe as well. Give me the choice between pulling some S3 or P3 out of AMARG then refurbishing them or some Brand new CN-235 and my choice is the latter.

In an ideal world I would of wanted MRA4 to enter service and if not that the P8 Poseidon but in these cash short times something like the CN-235 is a far better bet.

Maybe but CN-235 is fitted with the SELEX Seapspray 4000 as one of the standard radar options for the type. That might give some commonality with the Seaspray 3000 fitted to the Lynx HMA.8
