How easy would it be for the FAA to crew the CN-235MPA (or any other LRMPA)? I can see them finding it fairly easy to crew S-3’s, and even to integrate sensor systems similar to those used on the Merlin’s but surely the CN-235MPA would need a much larger crew, I searched but could find any reference to it crewing requirements?
Also I cannot find any mention that the CN-235MPA can launch sonar buoy’s does anyone have a reference to it ability to deploy sonar buoy’s?
Catch with the S3 is it would cost more to operate and probably need an upgrade prior to service. Also the UK would be the only operator.
Shouldn’t be any problem for Merlin sensor operators to convert onto the CN-235MPA systems, I presume that the aircraft needs a similar number of operators as Merlin. As for pilots well the navy does have some spare now the Harriers are gone. Actually I bet a few of those pilots might find it a very attractive way of staying in the service until F35C stands up.
Are you the ATC giganick1?
During the 90’s I was a member of 226 Brighton Number 2 Squadron. Got up to the lofty height of Corporal:D
To be honest my promotion chances were always slightly damaged as 226 was always a sport focused squadron and those who liked participating in the Wing sports day had a better chance of promotion:( As I was more interested in aviation matters rather then running about I was lucky to get up to the rank I did!
That was one of the things I discovered about the ATC, the amazing difference in activity program between squadrons depending on what the Officers were interested in.
If it happened we would be talking about something like CN-235MP/MPA.
As for the FAA operating them rather then the RAF it makes sense, frankly the RAF operation of MPA types is one of those historic hangovers from WW2 with RAF Coastal command.
New development!
Listening to Al Jazeera at the moment, apparently there is Libyan ship off the coast of Malta and the Italian airforce has scrambled to have a look.
Civil airliners I would say but going on Gaddafi’s speech I doubt many airlines will be keen on that at the moment.
As for reversing SDSR decisions…won’t happen but the government deserves egg on face!
Indeed the Type 22B3 was always how they should of been built.
I quite like the idea of a similar size class lean manned with the large double hanger powered by Diesels. Drop the ASW fit as the Type 23 can do that and give it a point defence only capability with something like a couple of MK 49 mounts with RIM-116(which is pretty much doing the same job as the six cell Seawolf launcher), leave space for Harpoon but don’t fit as again the Type 23 do that as well as the embarked helicopter. 4.5 or 5 inch gun for NGS plus the usual collection of DS30. Finally a good communications and control fit as well as Artisan.
True but talking about the Greek navy it would be cool if they used their Zubr class LCAC!
It would also be cool if they brought HS Georgios Averof and HS Olympias out of retirement to support the operations!:D Oh there goes my wild imagination again….
Agree! If the UK gets anything it will be AARGM as somebody else is paying for integration and qualification. That has been talk of a Meteor based solution but I doubt you will get many takers when there is an American solution off the shelf.
On a similar note the Greece has offered to evacuate EU citizens via ships from Libya.
I have a hunch the Greek navy and Airforce must be busy standing up ships and equipment tonight if they plan an evacuation!
Nah the ASaC7 are in Afghanistan are they not?
I agree but the Anti carrier brigade will pounce on it!
Expect articles in the papers soon written by ex generals talking about 21st century counter insurgency combat and the need to kill off cold war relics!
Looking at this report I get a feeling that the anti carrier (lets cancel them) brigade have regrouped!

I agree that the MOD and industry plays a major part in this mess but politicians and the Treasury need own up as well. Also the services need to reflect on their desire to have often unique UK solutions to problems.
Yet again they go on about the carriers being over budget but the main reason for that is the previous government delaying the industry expected maingate from 2004 to 2007! Then reorganising the contractors, then changing the contractors and then getting all the contractors to merge their operations. Finally the politicians forced the contractors to slow down the build process adding even more cost!
I have no doubt that Tornado is gone from 2015! We can argue if the RAF shot themselves in the foot or not by retaining it rather then Harrier but in the end the Treasury wants its saving!
Large images of the Mirages at the following links. Serials confirmed as 502 and 508.

Excellent pictures! They look to be in a very good state, then again its common knowledge that the Libyan airforce didn’t heavily use its Mirages.
As I said earlier those SNEB pods will have to be made safe, the French or the Spanish air forces could help with that (I presume Spanish Mirage F1 operate SNEB rockets as well).
1:38 into the video, oh the irony for the UK!
Not likely if the RN can avoid it, you might see a motion soon but not much more.
If it turned into a Rwanda scenario then maybe…
The real tell tale is if Italy significantly increases her readyness! For Italy chaos in Libya a serious issue and I bet Silvio Berlusconi would like his own Falklands just about now…
