I have pondering an interesting problem with launch operations on the QE class.
Once an F35B runs up to full power prior to take off how are they going to stop it skidding down the deck especially if its wet? The Russians use a red hold back bar just ahead of the JBD to allow the aircraft to run up to full reheat without going for an unplanned journey down the deck. I presume the solution will be carried over to INS Vikramaditya and whatever the Chinese will call the Varyag. Seems like a good solution for the QE class to my mind along with some JBD.

Well considering the NGS isn’t a primary role I can live with the MK8 and the cost saving in using it. The Phalanx is virtually a single day in harbour bolt on and the mounts are in A-stan for the moment dealing with what Terry Taliban is lobbing at our bases, not happy with it not being fitted but it can be sorted quick. Harpoon would be nice but again anti ship capability isn’t a primary role and we have plenty on the Type 23.
As for wiring issues well I’m not that surprised and not that bothered, its a complex high tech ship and those issues are to be expected as the systems are bedded in. People forget it took a long time for the Type 42’s systems to be sorted.
There was a conceptual plan to use launch rails and skyhooks to deploy sea harriers from small platforms. The mooted advantage there appeared to be deleting the undercarriage altogether and thus saving all that nasty mass.
The Skyhook also has some massive disadvantages!
The payload carried by the Harrier would be small due to it launching in hover mode.
If the Skyhook mechanism was damaged or inoperable then the aircraft would have to ditch.
The time that a Harrier can hover is rather short so to perform the manouvre of lining up to be captured would have to be done quickly, imagine trying that in the North Atlantic in heavy seas at the end of a mission!
The destroyer/frigate fitted out with the Skyhook and hanger would be a terribly compromised design. Too small to operate a significant number of Harriers and useful space taken up with the skyhook rather then weapon systems.
In the end if you wanted to operate Harrier you are better off buying a version of the Sea Control design that Spain eventually built and a number of affordable frigates rather then the Skyhook system.
They got a lot of help with that T-10K prototype. They also got a Su-25UTG off the Ukrainians according to Kanwa. The domestic naval flanker J-11H is very close to first flight if it hasn’t flied yet. I think they are aiming it to be ready for service somewhere around 2015 when Varyag becomes officially commisioned into service. Of course, having real carrier op experience will take much longer
Until then, J-11H will first do some testing in SAC, before being handed to CFTE or naval aircraft testing facility. And then China’s first batch of naval pilots will be testing either at NITKA or some domestic facility, probably NITKA.
The question I have is does the domestic WS-10A have the punch to get the J-11H/J-15 off a ski jump comfortably. Another thing is its fairly well known that China has experimented with steam catapults (apparently stripped) from HMAS Melbourne and its certainly a technology they are capable of replicating and offers some advantages in relation to airgroup operations, I could see an indiginous carrier being fitted with steam catapults.
Not sure when a 1000 missiles is aimed at the small island where would these fighters land once they fly towards mainland.

A locally produced fighter with major foreign (American) input. Design, subsystem development and major components were subcontracted to US companies.

U.S. House Seapower Chair Wants Ship-Retirement Limits
U.S. House Armed Services seapower panel chairman Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss., will work to insert language into the 2011 defense authorization bill requiring the U.S. Navy to replace every two warships it retires in the coming years with three brand-new ships. It’s a move designed to get to a 313-ship fleet.
“There have now been at least three [Chiefs of Naval Operations] who tell us that they need a minimum of 313 ships and yet they submit budget requests that don’t get them anywhere near that – in fact, this request would actually take us backward by about four ships if enacted,” Taylor told reporters May 13 after his subcommittee’s mark of the bill.
Taylor went on to say that he will also work to keep two 30-year-old Tarawa Class amphibious assault ships, the USS Nassau and USS Peleliu, in commission since “they still have about 10 years of life left.”

It also restricts RAF capabilities by locking it into only using the PFI solution even if it isn’t efficient. For example the A400 the UK are buying are all plumbed to deliver air to air refueling from the factory but with the PFI agreement the RAF wouldn’t be able to buy the refueling pods to hang off the wings. The A400 could of been a useful way of increasing tanking capacity in an emergency and would be far more suitable for the Falklands station rather then the a330mrtt.
OTO-Melera tried the concept with the Otomatic 76mm AAA tank.

What a pointless debatte. Rafale F3 already blows every current Typhoon out of the water. An upgraded and enhanced F4 would even more dominate the Typhoon, which has no upgrade path.

– Su-33 upgradeMig29K become available just at the time whn Kuz will go for upgrade (5 yrs in dock). If Mig29Ks on revamped Kuz’, then what are upgraded Su-33 for? It is not that Kuz all of a sudden got larger and can carry significantly more aircraft, of either variety. Perhaps some modernized Su-33 will find their way to PRC?
Is there ever a time when the Kuz isn’t in dock for repair, overhaul and upgrade!
On a serious note the impression I got was the Su-33 would be upgraded then operated alongside the Mig-29K, I would think she has space for a mixed air group.
As for China some kind of J11B variant (what about the J15?) and maybe a J-10 variant but I get a feeling it would take a fair amount of reworking to make it suitable for carrier operations.
Then again they really need some form of trainer as well, a K8 variant would be logical but maybe a L15 variant with its reheat would be better in respect of getting off the ski jump.
