Add Northrop Grumman into that mix because they own the Precision Guided Munition Planning System that allows SLAM-ER, and other :diablo: evil American PGMs, to be used in its fullest capability.
But the bottom line is the US Department of State, an appendage of the Obama administration, has the final say in the matter. Give Obama enough under-the-table campaign contributions, and he will make it happen. (That process worked when the PLA wanted ballistic missile technology from Clinton).
I think the US will sign off SLAM-ER integration on the Rafale, I don’t think they regard the fighter as much of a sales threat so there isn’t much harm to be had and it might even open up export potential for the US.
I don’t. Such upgades are already planified/prepared a long time before a contract/order is signed : I heard about it when visiting the french AWACS airbase in 2006 & 2008.
Sorry, I can’t remember accurately, but public sources are available (press, websites…). They were (at last) two upgrades under way, regarding :
– mission system (radar…) (IIRC this is the one recently announced)
– vector systems (new avionics)Agreed for the point of Red Air. 🙂
But… The initial statement was : 4-0 then 3-1 with “limited weapons” for the Rafale.
Unless I’m seriously mistaking, Blue Air “plays” with its own, “real” strengh (capabilities ; except for those you don’t wanna show to you allies/comrades/customers/…).
On the other hand, Red Air “plays” the role of a defined opponent, for example : “today, you’re red air, and you simulate Flankers armed with Alamo A”.
Then, if one side “limits” its weapons capabilities, doesn’t that mean that this side plays Red Air ? And faces a “full capability” Blue Air ?
Wondering…Cheers
Az’
The thing is Blue Air in multi national exercises clearly doesn’t use all its capabilities hence my cynicism over the stated results.
well, let’s see what’s been said:
besides exercises (meaning, nobody was “acting red or blue”, but only “us against them”), there were several confrontations, Rafale vs Typonn in degraded mode (MICA range artifically reduced) and WVR confrontations Rafale vs F-22.
so, in clear terms: head on confrontation, and let the best win (the day’s best at least, not that one result gives a definitive and undisputable rating).
that “I want to see the context” start to look like if you watched the wimbledon final, Rafael Nadal wins against Federer, and when you tell your buddy (Federer fan), he answers:
“gee, I don’t know, I want to see the context before considering that a victory”
what context? it was in daylight… on grass… plenty of people around the court watching the game… simple tennis game…
Yes context is important, nobody has stated if Eurofighter took the gloves off properly in the exercise, I seriously doubt it.
Any half-way decent system would be tested against the toughest problems they could come up with, not “problems” designed to make the system look good.
Well the best systems they could come up with, doesn’t mean whoever developed the ALR94 had access to the Eurofighter AIS or Rafale SPECTRA.
Considering neither of these systems come fully out to play in exercises I find hard to concieve how the developers of the ALR94 can be confident that they have everything covered.
ok Fedaykin, i’ll take the bait, show the links to where they say they are 5th gen
I’m not Google!
Anyway Typhoon for example was listed as 5th generation on the RAF’s own website…but as I regard the whole GENERATION concept as invalid why bother wasting my time giving you links to something I don’t believe in?
I’m going to say it again despite getting frankly bored of pointing it out:
“There is no such thing as fighter GENERATIONS – nobody agrees what it actually means and it is all frankly marketing BS”!
The European airforces who operate the Gripen, Rafale and Typhoon all say that they are 5th generation fighters in their opinion more then capable of meeting their air defence needs for the next thirty to forty years!
Nuff said!
Yeah I’m pretty sure they’ve never considered jammers or detection equipment. What’s that stealth stuff for anyway?
Well I more then certain they do think about it BUT I feel European technology is far better then they give credit and I think the US will be surprised about how good it really is.
Notice I said PROPER use of jamming and detection equipment rather then the watered down nature of exercises.
Frankly without context I am highly cynical about the stories coming out of the AdA. We have heard pretty much nothing out of the other services involved except that it was a training exercise.
Maybe it was a 7-1 for Rafale vs Typhoon but without the context of the engagements it means nothing. What if the Typhoons were acting as Red force with intentionally limited tactics and systems use? The whole point of Red force is to die!
I also don’t think the F22 is quite the magic bullet it is made out to be, against late generation aircraft with the gloves properly taken off (ie proper use of electronic jamming and detection equipment) I think the US might be a bit surprised.
Not glib comments
Simply strange facts, only
and the older type 051 Luda (clearly TOTALLY obsolete since more than nearly two decade ! although modernised), the Chinese are gradually replacing them by 054 ?
Fair play on that.
Indeed it is strange but the rate of PLA modernisation is amazing! The 051 Luda will be gone in a year or so as well, as I said they are smaller and easier to maintain due to the entirely local content. The PLAN have been using them close into the coast anyway rather then in true bluewater ops.
You never know maybe the 052 are going through a modernisation but I doubt it, the Harbin especially with her American engines must be a pain to look after. Her systems are a mess of different technologies and the PLAN clearly love the 054A which they are pressing into anti air as well asw taskings. The CODAD propulsion makes it nice and cheap as well, just look how many they have produced so far and they don’t seem to want to stop on that.
Very strange to retire from service a ships commissioned in 1992-1993 (1980’s design) when some others OLDER destroyers of 1950-1960’s vintage (Luda class, type 51, commissioned 1974-1990) were in service
:rolleyes::rolleyes:
Yes they were built in 92-93 but they are a sub class using a mess of different obsolete foreign systems.
The 50s-60’s vintage ships are less complicated and easier to source spares for.
As I said I maybe wrong but rather then use the rolleyes button why don’t you actually do some research before you come back with glib comments…
Latest “gutted” photos of the Type 052 Luhu class DDG 112 Harbin.
Funnel removed, Towed Array shielded, Electronics gone. Clearly, it is more than a standard mid-life refit.
Looks like she is being scrapped or being prepared to be sunk in an exercise.
The 052 Luhu class are an odd element of the PLAN fleet, in the early 90’s arguably the best locally built ships they had but they must be an utter logistics nightmare now!
They are fitted with a mix of French, Italian, American and Chinese systems with little to no chance of getting spare parts for much of the equipment. The fitted systems are also pretty much obsolete and now the 054A are flying out of the shipyards along with the 052C, 051C and 052B (I believe the PLAN regards this class as a bit of a failure) they have many more ships with better more reliable systems.
The cost of overhauling and replacing the systems of the 052 Luhu in comparsion with just building another 054A has probably sealed the classes fate. Maybe I’m wrong but its the end of the line for this class!
Stop upgrading AFVs that can’t be deployed? Bulldog may not be in use in Afghanistan (I don’t know why, I don’t buy that terrain bull****) but it did sterling work in Iraq and frankly the £150 million spent equates to what, 2 mastiffs, I think I’d rather the bulldogs for 3 years.
I think he was talking about Warrior, Bulldog and Mastiff were via UOR’s!
Egypt to manufacture first fighter, drone plane: MENA
Egypt is set to produce its first fighter and drone “in cooperation with a foreign side”, official MENA news agency reported on Saturday.
“Talks and negotiations are underway about a project to produce Egypt’s first fighter and drone plane,” MENA quoted Lt. General Hamdy Waheba, Chairman of Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI), Egypt’s state-owned company specialized in producing civilian goods as well as military products.
The official did not name the foreign party which will take a hand at the process.
Full Story
My hunch would be China for the fighter, its a logical next step on from the local K8 production.
Well what we have seen for the last week or two is a concerted effort by the army to get a bigger cut of the pie!
They argue that the UK is mainly going to fight Afghanistan like wars in the future.
Problem with that is the UK is aiming to be out by 2015 and I don’t think the British public has the stomach to start another operation like that.
Unnamed sources within the British army (interesting how they won’t put their money where mouth is and reveal who they are) say within the press that they are angry over the UK wasting money on two carriers and they should be cancelled.
Problem with that is the contracts are solid, steel has been cut, blocks delivered and any cancellation would cost billions, destroy whats left of British ship building and cripple the UK’s ability to conduct independent expeditionary warfare.
Those unamed sources also state the Typhoon should be cancelled.
Even more perverse as cancelling the carriers as contracts are (fairly) solid, billions has been spent, aircraft delivered and any major cancellations will cause hefty penalties. Also the Uk needs some kind of air superiority fighter for air defence in the UK and Falklands, we might as well use the ones purchased at great cost.
In my opinion if they army wants cost savings what about pulling out of Germany?
So..what do you think our friend Mr.Kopp will say?
“Arrrghhhh!!! Super Hornet not good enough….must buy F22…!”
Something like that I think:rolleyes:
