Waste of money to send anything extra down there. This is grandstanding for a domestic audience, because the government is struggling. Reports from Argentina suggest the public response is deeply cynical, & not what Cristina hoped for. It’s still ‘the economy, stupid!’, for most Argentineans. Back-pedalling too obviously would lose face, but I expect a gradual fading away of the rhetoric once it’s obvious it’s not working.

I agree a waste to send anything down there for what is Argentine hot air, the general public on the minland don’t want a war.

Alas its the hidden spotter in me that would love to see a readyness exercise with GR4 and AWACS…imagine the fantastic pictures from MPA.

I do expect some face saving schenannigans from the Argentine navy, trying stop ships to see papers etc. As said earlier easily solved by an overflight by 1435!

All a load of rubbish; sabre rattling from the Argentine Government and usual claptrap from the British red tops.

The idea that a naval task force was en route to the Falklands was especially hilarious: 1 Destroyer, a patrol ship, survey vessel and a tanker, all of which were already in the area.

Yeah the whole taskforce stuff out of the red tops especially the Sun were very funny. Normal tasking at the right time!

I do feel it might be a good moment to hold a snap readyness exercise, lets say four or five GR4’s with Stormshadow, an AWACS and a Tristar down south for a few days.

Maybe some press on the E3D with a handy RAF officer explaining how the AN/APY-2 is tracking flights over Argentina. Should send a clear enough message to our friends in Beunos Aires!

Seems that the design of the vessel closer to the light frigate or Corvette rather than the destroyer. And it seems to be a kind of domestically Alvand (Saam) Class frigate.

Iran’s navy launches first home-made destroyer: report

Iran’s navy launched its first domestically made destroyer in the presence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday, Iran’s English-language satellite channel Press TV reported.

The Jamaran guided missile destroyer, a Mowdge Class vessel, has a displacement of around 1,420 tons and is equipped with modern radars and electronic warfare capabilities, Press TV said.

The multi-mission destroyer, which has a top speed of 30 knots, can carry 120-140 personnel on board and is armed with a variety of anti-ship and surface-to-air missiles.

The destroyer has also been equipped with torpedoes and modern naval cannons, the report added.

Indeed a patrol Corvette in reality but useful in the littorals especially if she is fitted with C802 missiles (or local version). She has the local oto76 copy Fajr27.

Shes not meant to be a bluewater toe to toe warship rather stick close to the coast and lob off antiship missiles. The main roll would be sovereignty patrols anyway so it seems suitable for the job.

Will be sad to see the last F-6 dervatives leave PAF.

Indeed the F6 has served the PAF very well, a highly underated fighter in my opinion.

What’s the Grifo AESA upgrade path? Is it a Vixen antenna & a software upgrade?

Hard to get a clear bead on it but Vixen 500E frontend with Grifo backend.

I thought PAF had decided to go for (and orderd) an Italian radar for JF-17 all ready?

Indeed I find this whole French upgrade package rather bemusing, the Selex Grifo is a far more logical solution. Pakistan already licence builds a variant and there is an upgrade path for AESA. If you look at page 4 of the product brochure here the Grifo S7 is listed as the JF17 option.

    http://www.selex-sas.com/EN/Common/files/SELEX_Galileo/Products/GRIFO_FAMILY.pdf

I would think a combination of the Grifo S7 for radar and Swedish or South African ESM/ECM, RWR would be logical. Pakistan has a growing defence relationship with both South Africa and Sweden.

Interesting photos to compare. I’d never thought of the RF-4E’s not getting the smokeless engine mods.

So does the HAF plan to replace them soon or what is planned in that area?

Seems like the Turks see a use for their photo-Phantoms for quite a bit longer, which I think is great.

The problem with the combustor mod for the J79 to make it smokeless is the increase in maintenance and reduced time between overhaul.

Wasn’t that the one where they had a ‘test’ with silvered balloons popping up as targets, & the turret swivelling & guns shooting them down infallibly, which impressed everyone – until it was leaked that the guidance system wasn’t working at all, & the ‘test’ was choreographed & rehearsed?

One of many tests, the US Army were so keen to get the system the minor issue of it not actually working was ignored.

The silly thing is they could of fitted licenced built GEC 35mm Marksman or Gepard turrets to M60 chassis and they would of had a world beater. Instead they stuck two WW2 vintage bofor canon barrels on an M48 chassis slower then the Abrahms and Bradley it was meant to defend with a fire control computer that had a habit over heating, a radar not designed for the ground roll and a totally new feed system which was happier jamming then actually feeding rounds into the guns.

The Marksman was actually tested on the M60 chassis and I’m sure the Gepard turret wouldn’t of been a problem.

Recently there were some pictures of a rather strange looking F16 in China, I think I might of found out where its from and why it exists.

I was looking on the Reuters website and found an article about a Chinese company called Chengdu Yingmin which specialises in making life size models of vehicles, tanks and aircraft for the film industry.

Have a look at their website if your curious:

and i’ve said this before, to a disappeared legendary
poster earlier up this thread, how come no one with
the “The French are telling lies” position has
even bothered to think that : since such an exercise
as the Advanced Tactical Leadership Course uses
Awacs and ground based detection ( not withstanding
the possible satellite shoots since they won’t exchange
them or let us have a copy posted here ) in addition to
all the A/Cs electronics and cams, IF THE FRENCH
    have lied/misrepresented/embellished the truth……….
EVERY darn fu…ng one over there in the UAE now knows!

I do understand that some think that, we, French are so
dumb, ouch it must hurt! But to believe that our best
minds did not think of the consequences of such an act…
well, sorts of requires about the same in dumbness…?

Take your time; have a cold one or warm for our Brit
    buddies; think it over.

I wouldn’t say lies, they have made public statements, but massage the nature of what happened to support the Rafale in sales contests…yes. Please don’t be offended other airforces certainly do the same thing. The RAF and USAF are both guilty of that kind of thing over the years, just the way things work when it comes to selling or procuring multi million dollar/Euro/pound defence equipment:

I suggest you look up the M247 Sergeant York or the TSR2 when it comes to a service massaging the nature of what happened to support an agenda. OK the M247 is pretty much the extreme of what a service (the US army in this case) can get up to but does teach you to read between the lines.

In the case of the 7-1 statement, OK clearly that is true but without either service going into detail over the nature of the engagements its unfair to read this as a major technical failing for the Typhoon. If on the other hand it was gloves off with the systems, skilled aircrew and Typhoon was roundly thrashed I would be the first to shout out the Eurofighter partner nations have purchased an utter Lemon. Considering there are other exercises against different types with Typhoon clearly wiping the floor with all who came I think its unwise to read too much into what happened. With the potential sale of Rafale to the UAE I am aproaching the statements from AdlA with the same Cynicism I would show the RAF if a major procurement was on the cards for Typhoon.

no sunshine, how it works is, if you make a claim and are called on it, you need to substantiate it or withdraw it

ps, i looked on the raf site and couldnt find a reference to the typhoon being called a 5th gen

pps, 4.5 is defined as a 4th gen air frame with a bit of rcs work with 5th gen electronics, hence the reference to the decimal point 5
i understand the reason of the title of this topic, but there is no such thing as a 4.9

No this is an open forum, I don’t need to do anything. My main point was defining aircraft by generation is pointless when different manufacturers and airforces view it in their own way.

The reference was there until recently, if they remove it not my problem.

Also please don’t define 4.5 to 5th generation to me…as I KEEP SAYING the definition changes depending on who you speak to. I regard anybody who uses it to prove a point in a forum as borish and ill informed.

    Maybe. Or maybe not.

It has been clearly stated that the Rafale was in “degraded” mode, but nothing in any way has been said about the Typhoon.

If it seems “logical” to pretend that the opposition were in a similar state, but it has not been claimed.
Meanwhile, if the Typhoon had been had been in degraded mode too, then why has it not been said ? At a minimum this would have helped the Typhoon’s PR to minimize the stated results.

After the debacle of the exercise in India a few years back with Tornado F3’s and the Indian press taking everything in the exercise out of context causing much embarrasment for Bae Systems and the RAF I get the impression these days for them to stay out of such debates.

Also as I keep saying there is reduced performance state and intentionally operating with a set of imposed restrictions, as neither service has fully explained what was agreed I find it hard to draw a logical conclusion over what happened.

sure, the typhoon just went out to get slaughtered in front of the rare nations that can afford fighters of such a price… seems so logical.

The AdlA statement (official and all that) is that confrontations took place besides the official exercises and that the rafale was in a degraded mode. Nobody (nobody having any competence as to what happened overthere) came to contest that version, so:

Unless you have some serious source (not neighbor’s kid’s pal’s uncle whose mother in law is a secretary in a dental office where the grand mother of a villager living within less than 50miles from an air base), such “doubt” seems to be mostly fanboyism rather than a thought through opinion

In what way is it Fanboyism to express some doubt over the details of what happened? You seem to forget that a forum is a place for open discussion and debate, so I have every right to express an opinion without you denigrating it as mere Fanboyism. I regard myself as an aviation enthusiast and whilst I do have my preferences I’m not so stick in the mud to acknowledge the capabilities of different aircraft.

Just because its an AdlA statement doesn’t mean they are incapable of massaging the meaning of what happened, and thats all I am saying. If you note I also say that I don’t have much cause to not believe the figures only the nature of how it happened. I could argue that France very much wants to sell this aircraft to the UAE and will present results of any exercise out of context to help that process, that is MY opinion and you can disagree freely but don’t belittle me for it.

On the other hand your first paragraph is pretty much the most chest thumping Fanboyish statements I have ever read. I suggest that before you throw out a term which is regarded by forum members as highly insulting that you tone down your own retoric!
