Regardless of the capabilities of the weapon systems the pace of events was going far to quick for authorisation to shoot down the second and third airliners with SAMS or jets.
Up to the first impact the civil air traffic control authorities thought they were dealing with a normal hijack. Normal procedure is to wait for them to land and make their demands then sit it out unless they start executing passengers. There wasn’t the authorisation to just shoot down civil airliners at the time especially over major urban areas. The authorisation would still have had to go up to the office of the president and back down again, with the confusion the authorisation would still have arrived after the attack was finished.
The twin towers were hit within minutes of each other and the first impact was actually considered an accident by many up to the second impact. The tragic timing of the chain of events precludes the idea of the millitary having the time to shoot down the airliners even with SAMS.

I don’t have shares in BAE, thus I have no interest in the Hawk’s continuing success or otherwise. Certainly I have zero interest in defending an aircraft on ‘nationalist grounds’ or because it’s the ‘domestic product’.
Indeed, if Hawk does continue, I suspect that it will soon not be a British-built aircraft.
That may help address it’s high up front price tag.
It will continue to be an exceptionally maintainable and supportable aircraft, however, with notably low through life costs.

The L-159 is still essentially an L-39 airframe, with a very short life by modern standards and designed to a different maintenance concept.
I have to agree with Flex here on this one Jackonicko, I think your being rather unfair to Aero Vodchody and its product. Its a Czech aircraft not Russian and by in large the Czechs built to better standards even during the Soviet era. There are many L39 around the world that have flown many hours often in far harsher operating conditions that a hawk would ever face.
As for the L159 well it is very much a new design built to western standards and practices.

except that even back then, the F16 was a better mudslinger than the F4, with its far superior CCIP computer. The sparrow was used on some F16’s but never got into widespread use. F16 did have a potential BVR capability from day one.
Nah F16 didn’t get Sparrow capability until late Block 15 during the 80s, a great many were done as part of the ADF program bringing the fleet up to Block 15ocu status.
In the late 70’s it was really a day time only light fighter.
Best fighter over the length of the 70’s, I would say F4.

I must admit VL MICA is interesting and it offers the advantage of using VL Seawolf launch silo’s. The issue I see on the other hand is Seawolf is getting upgraded for another 10 years service and I’m not sure VL MICA would offer that significant a performance advantage over Sea Wolf.
I can certainly see the VL Seawolf container being used for CAAM.
Yeah I really like VL Mica too. I wonder if it’s capability is played down to reduce canablisation of the Aster-15 market? The stated range used to be only 10km but now the MBDA site says 20km. Also, I wonder why the Meteor hasn’t been marketed as a SAM? Again I suspect market segmentation with excellent Aster-30. MBDA seems to have a massive amount of duplication and internal competition in its missile product portfolio. Obviously mergers bringing with them non-aligned customer bases is a factor, but why MEADS and Aster etc.
Hit it on the head! MBDA has a product portfolio derived from several merged companies hence the capability overlap.

Supposedly Ukraine supplied SAMS and they have large numbers of soviet era fighters in storage so wouldnt be that suprising if a few found their way to georgia, it would be the most likely source i would imagine.China would not want to supply fighters in fear of annoying the russians and the USA would be unlikely for fear of perhaps escalating the situation any further.Gripen would be too expensive to buy in sufficent numbers to fend off another air attack of this size.Perhaps some Turkish F-5’s could be bought??
I don’t think China would care one iota about annoying the Russians, who they sell to is their concern.
I think its far too early to wonder too much about re-equipment for Georgia, what I can say is they will have been entirely pushed into the Western sphere when it comes to arms procurement.

The Harrier will certainly be soldiering on to the end of the next decade maybe even a bit further.
For the RN it would be problematic but considering CVF can be adapted to CTOL operations there are alternative options albeit at a cost. If F35 STOVL was canceled then there would be a good chance of the CTOL version and failing that the Super Hornet or Rafale could be adopted.
For the Italian and Spanish navies cancellation of STOVL JSF would be highly problematic as there new carriers Cavour and Juan Carlos 1 are only really suitable for STOVL operations.
Guess this can only be good news for RR and teh F-136 team, any delays will mean their project will be more advanced when the aircraft comes of age, hopefully they will have a much clearer run.
Yeah I was going to say the same thing. As far as I’m aware the F136 team are not facing the same problems anyway.
“B” as it is available now effectively free and allows an upgrade path to “C” which could be retrofitted later with minimum pain. Failing that option “D” as it has the lowest risk outside of “B” and “C”.
Initially the Scottish airforce would be agreement recieve a percentage of each type currently in or on order for the RAF.
However there would be room for negotiation regarding what and how many.
For example, a Scottish Airforce might not have a use for GR4s so could perhaps take more than it’s percentage of Typhoons.
Likewise it might trade of it’s share of E3s for something else.
Your right Potagee that Scotland could rightly take a share of each type in service but I don’t think it would work out that way. Scotland just wouldn’t have the tax revenue to support all those types and I don’t think an independant Scotish government would be interested in the expeditionary nature of the current forces. I think Scotland would be looking towards something similar to the Irish air corp whilst demanding a financial reparation for the share of the types that were not transferred. Its a figure that could be worked out fairly easily considering 83.8% of the population are English and 8.5% is Scottish. Frankly Scotland isn’t entitled to that large a share anyway unless you throw in the oil and gas money argument which I can guarantee Westminster will say no to. For example the Scottish are entitled to a percentage share of Trident but an independent Scottish government probably wouldn’t want it. Far easier to transfer the infrastructure to Davenport and pay Scotland a financial reparation.

This isn’t the first time this has happened in this forum, I made a post a few months back complaining about this behavior. As far as I can see it people are just ignoring my contributions.
Whats the point of me writing out contributions if nobody will acknowledge them.
It might make most sense to simply pursue the elusive final two Type 45s (i.e. hulls 7 & 8), and then build at least eight general purpose T-45 derivatives. The general purpose version would ideally be about the same size, but not as AAW oriented – perhaps still have Aster 30 capability, but not as primary AAW ships.
The best thing, though, would be to pursue numbers, as long as they don’t sacrifice capability too much. I think something like the FREMM might be best, ideally in two versions – one with a full ASW and limited AAW fitout (i.e. the RN’s C-1 concept), and one with a much more limited fitout (the C-2). Ideally, at least eight of each would be needed to properly replace the current Type 22B3s and Type 23s. The C-2 type should ideally have the ability to be upgraded later to more like the C-1 spec, should the need arise. Both classes would have a suitable VLS, but with the C-1 carrying a mix of Aster 30 and Aster 15 (unless someone pays attention to my suggestion of a quad-packed VL-Meteor! :diablo:). The C-2s would then carry a mix of Aster 15 (or the VL-Meteor) plus some cruise missiles, either Tomahawk or Scalp Naval. The C-2s would be forward deployed to, say, Cyprus, to support ops in the Med and Gulf. This is, of course, why they would want some limited land-attack capability!
So, to actually vote, not just waffle on about how things should be:
A – 10 x 5000 ton ‘frigates’
B – 8 x 7000 ton ‘destroyers’
C – 6 x 8000 ton ‘super destroyers’If this is to form the sole RN frontline surface combattant fleet, i.e. no extra ‘C-2s’ or equivalent, then a mere six to eight Type 45s and six to eight of these Type 4Xs is simply not going to cut it! You need a total of at least twenty, preferably more than 24. 🙂
I think the C-1/C-2 idea is the best solution. Also the lack of powerful sensors might not be the hindrance that they once would of been in a high intensity war. With data linking there is no reason why our C1/C2 tier combatants could effectively be spare missile platforms with targeting and control being handled by the Type 45. The Americans have had thoughts much down the same line with the CEC capability (something which the RN is joining) where an AEGIS ship uses the ASW escorts as extra missile platforms.
That way we get the best of both worlds with the costs being kept down for world policing but the ability to punch above their weight being retained for true high intensity wars.
As for missiles I would argue Aster 15 but it appears the MOD is set on a new generation Sea Wolf/ Rapier replacement so we shall see.
On a side note I don’t know why people bring up the idea of a naval Meteor, its performance would cross over with Aster making it a rather pointless development when investment has gone into that system.
Again, without trying to urinate on the parade, there are two seperate questions here. What is the best CIWS and what is the best CIWS for the Royal Navy in the fiscal environment she finds herself in?.
The two questions will produce totally different answers. Not least because primary defence against the more advanced missiles will be the preserve of the Asters aboard our T45’s and not a job for the CIWS.
I have to agree with Jonesy in respect of the best CIWS and the fiscal environment that the RN works in.
To flesh out my answer we also need to consider what the RN’s conclusions were post the Falklands war a conflict that affects the RN’s thinking to the present day in respect of anti air warfare. There are certainly some miss conceptions about this area especially in respect of RN CIWS.
To look at some of the points:
1) Effectiveness of decoys.
The RN found that decoys such as chaff to be effective in fooling the Exocet system. After the war there has been improved decoy systems due to this conclusion.
2) Effectiveness of radar.
The RN found radar coverage problems close into land. Radar systems were improved to deal with this and a crash AEW program launched.
3) Latest generation systems found to have floors in respect of tracking (tied into the radar problem) and performance especially close into land. This lead to a rolling program of improvements to Sea Dart and Sea Wolf.
4)Lack of small to medium calibre gun systems capable of engaging low flying fast jets. – This is a very important point in respect of CIWS systems within the RN.
To look at point 4 more closely this is one of the major reasons why Phalanx and later Goalkeeper were rushed into service. At the time (and to this day)the RN and USN for that matter were skeptical about the performance of Phalanx in respect of a Sea Skimmer. Its performance was optimised for engaging first generation anti ship missile systems like Styx. The RN’s solution to dealing with new generation Sea Skimmers is to detect and take out the launch platform early but if the missile got off then through experience it was found that decoys were an effective defensive measure.
To go back to the low flying fast jet problem the RN was caught completely by surprise! They had not expected to engage an enemy prepared to attack them with dumb bombs. There was a complete lack of adequate rapid fire canon in the fleet. After the war the RN rushed these systems into service from this experience, manual 20m canon through to 30mm auto canon. Certainly if the various canon systems the RN has available in service now like Phalanx San Carlos water would of been a very different story. Also Hms Coventry would more then likely survived the war, Phalanx was designed for just the scenario she faced. Further to that the woefully under armed Type 21 would of been much better served with a single Phalanx on the aft hanger much the same as the Pakistan navy did then the Sea Cat and 40mm bofors.
The thing is the public imagination has been caught by the idea of CIWS and its capabilities against missiles even if the reality view isn’t shared by the navy.
As for now well Aster is the big boy now and will be the main fleet defense until F35 enters service. Decoys will still be a big player, any CIWS systems will more then likely be taken from current stocks so its Phalanx we are talking about. I don’t see any money being released for any other system.

I want to hear more about the Spanish made bombs alluded to my one of our Argentine Air force members. It has always been the case in the UK that the use of British made bombs has been highly reported. It would be interesting to hear about the other munitions used.
