The thing that me is the constant cry that its a French company from certain American circles.

Its a European company with the ownership shared accross several states.

The accusation of risk to American technology is comical as well, the US is more then happy to sell advanced weapons technology to all the European nations owning EADS including France who operate the Hawkeye. What about the Aegis systems sold to Spain? Its a tanker aircraft we are talking about not a stealth bomber!

Also a great many KC135 operate with engines containing French parts, not once has anything been held back by France in relation to these engines.

Finally the way America talks about France saddens me, whilst over the years neither country has always seen eye to eye France is a NATO Ally that America owes not only its independance but the very nature of its democracy.

The Kunlun is the latest turbojet in the J-8IIs’ WP series.

The JH-7’s Spey replacement is the Qinling which is a relatively high-bypass turbofan for a long range strike aircraft.

I think something was lost in the translation with the names. Qinling is a set of peaks near the Kunlun mountain range which can account for the confusion.

Ah OK.

WP-14 is probably not for the JH7A then, Sinodefence lists the Qinling as the WS-9 a licence built variant of the Spey 202.

Actually China was lucky that the Phantom was retired from RAF service early, apparently the Speys that were delivered in 2001 as a follow on to the 1975 batch were intended for the FGR2 Phantom until the type was phased out in 1992. The Phantom fleet was going through a life extension to meet there OSD of the latter half of this decade and the engines were intended to form part of the process, instead they ended up gathering dust in a warehouse until they were shifted off to China.

Well we will need to see if the WS-13 is entirely smokeless.

The Rumour is its based on the RD-33 anyway which is logical in many respects.

Good news for Pakistan anyway.

Now I find the WP-14 very interesting, is it a warmed over Spey or do we have something new here?

serious question, how much life is left in the f3 airframe, sources (sorry wiki) say the best part of 200 f-3s were made for the RAF and i have seeen that as few as 59 are still in front line service, so i assume that would mean many are stored, some with quite low flights hours i would guess. Could these aircraft be sold, they still have reasonable interceptor capability for a country wanting to protect is boundries.

(did someone say they was a problem with f18 airframes, whilst their succesors were still a long way off!!!):dev2:

The RAF’s policy has been to rotate airframes from squadron use to maintenance to storage. So any stored airframes have probably at this point used have used much of their Fatigue Index (FI) points.

Actually it was one of the noteable issues with the F3 Tornado, if I remember correctly they had to go through a structural upgrade (beefing up) after only 18 FI points.

Another interesting point is the last structural upgrade for the RAF Phantoms would of given them an out of service of about now….makes you think.

I must admit that now Flug Werk are winding up the FW190 production it would be interesting to see them turn their hand to the JU88.

If they used the Chinese radials (licenced copy of the ASH82 – apparently the Chinese have lots of fresh units in a warehouse somewhere) that they have been using for the FW190 they have could the basis for a JU88 project.

The more exotic warbirds the better I say.

I must admit I do like the L159 ALCA.

Looking back to when the New Zealand government took the lamentable decision of removing their air combat element by retiring the Skyhawk I always felt that they should of looked into the L159a. Its affordable, modern and compatible with much of the munitions carried by the Skyhawk fleet.

Definitely, for refuelling our C-17s. And with a receptacle for high-speed refuelling of each other, if needed. I’m sure EADS would be happy to oblige if we asked for booms.

The bemusing feature of the Article was that graphic representation of an Boomed A330 refuelling a B-2, and it’s relevance to the RAF deal.

Is the Times trying to suggest that the RAF MRTT’s will have a Boom?

They should be buying it with the boom!

Digging up an old thread as its all changed. Two aircraft plan has been scrapped and only one smaller jet for flights around the UK is to be purchased

Sad turn up for the books, it lowers my opinion of Brown and his government even further.

As I said earlier even third world nations have an airliner type for the head of state.

I don’t think the 767 could objectively be called “totally unsuitable” for the job.:D

The 330 has some advantages, the 767 other…like a higher made in USA content and a lighter footprint as discussed previously.

Again, it’s clear that many Euorpean nations have chosen projects based on local employment (among other factors), the U.S. should be free to do that as well.

I would agree on many levels if it wasn’t for the hysterical almost zenophobic reaction from certain circles especially in congress.

Also I don’t like this 45,000 jobs figure being pushed around. The fact is there will be no job losses within Boeing and Northrop Grumman are going to generate thousands of new jobs themselves.

The contest was clear and open, Boeing only started to raise a stink when they lost it.
