Firstly I did do a side on image of the INS Mumbai notice the Unit citation notice on the bridge.
FedaykinAt 25 thousand tonnes choice of aircraft would be limited, the De Gaulle is really the smallest you can go for the larger types.
The main issue is the lack of deck length, with good boilers the Super Etendard could possibly operate off a carrier this size but I wonder how many deck landing cycles the ones in Argentine service can still take. Alot of surplus French ones will be coming available soon but they have had a heavy life in the Aero Navale.
Surplus A6E and A7E are too big and heavy for that small a CTOL carrier. F/A-18a/b c/d hornet are also too big plus none really available (I know there are some sitting in AMARC but they are being retained for the Marine corp or have used up their deck landing cycles).
This leaves the Rafale which again is too big/heavy and possibly outside what can be afforded.
If Argentina is looking at CTOL only then the Tejas is counted out as its going to be a STOBAR type. The Mig29K is also a STOBAR type and I don’t think Argentina would even consider a Russian type.
Considering Argentina has a good overhaul and update facility for the A4 Skyhawk I could see it being selected if they can find airframes available which are suitable for a deep overhaul and update from the remaining global A4 users (possibly Israel?). This also has the benefit of being common to a type they already use and the Brazillian navy.
I can see any future air group using a combination of the Super Etendard and S2 Tracker already in service as well as the A4. To be honest I think this is all a bit pie in the sky really as I doubt there is any money in the kitty to fund this kind of project and I don’t think it really meets Argentine defence needs. What Argentina needs is a good multi role fighter type plus tankers.
FedaykinFed: mate the Goalkeeper is a much harder hitting system than the Sea Zenith, GK is of 30mm calibre and the SZ is only 25mm. There are advantages for both but when it comes down to it, Turkey is the only operator of the SZ where as the GK has gone global (three countries actually produced it after all).
Can’t wait to see what is on the other film, should be good. I too have yet to convert to Digital. My trouble is that I have over $18k worth of equipment so I would like a camera that will be able to use my lenses that I already have.
You should be able to get a lense ring adaptor depending on what you use. Im picking the film up after work so I should be able to upload any interesting pictures tomorrow.

Fedaykin, were you taken to the super luxurious parts of the ship? (Capt’s quarters etc)
From personal experience, guests going onboard an IN ship always received a salute (from the Capt, 2inC and any other officer there) before they entered. Its funny that it did’nt happen this time? Guess it depends on the Capt. Was he there or was the crowd large?
Im afraid no one was allowed inside! just a deck walk im afraid.

FedaykinDoes the Chinese Type 730 fire Russian or Oerlikon/GAU-8 type ammunition?
I don’t think its ever been made clear, considering China operates the AK630 (and makes a copy I think) I would presume it uses a version of that types ammunition.
Fedaykinis there any french links to the Type 730 ciws guns on PLAN ships ? 2 x 30mm 7 barrels I believe.
The best link I have seen is the Sinodefence one which is in English Im afraid.
The type 730 is very similar (almost a copy) of the Goalkeeper with a single 7 barrel 30mm cannon.
The twin gattling gun system you are probably thinking of is the russian Kashtan system.
FedaykinYes Steve, they do, most French guns have at least a DP role if not a multi role. Still I think that they are refering to a smaller caliber weapon.
What interests me more is the fact that Oto mate are giving up on the 40mm turrets and going with the smaller 30mm guns. What I’d like to know is what effect will this have on those navies with the 40mm in service already (and there are a few of them), what support and spares will Oto offer after cancellation of the line?
Considering the global take up of oto guns I would think they would be shooting themselves in the foot if they gave up product support of their discontinued product lines.
I bet if you look through oto’s sales literature they have more then one upgrade program for their 40mm products.
FedaykinLooking at the pictures the Turks have done a fine job refitting them for Kazakh service. (Maybe a subject for another thread but I am interested in the state of Turkish shipbuilding, I believe Pakistan is looking into buying a Corvette type off them).
The armament looks well matched to Kazakh needs, more then enough fire power to overmatch smuggler and criminal types and no complicated fire control systems to look after.
The vessel itself looks perfect for the task of waving the Kazakh flag and give them the experiance required if they do look into buying something larger and more powerful in the future. I find it particularly interesting that the Americans are interested in providing training and support.

Fed: MAte these are nice pics and I am honoured that you chose to post them so that I and the rest could have a look at your handy work. Look at those nasty Sea Zeniths on the Turkish vessel, man we got gipped when we didn’t go for those. They have a greater field of coverage than the Phalanx system (IIRC -60*:+127*). As for Aradu, yes she has been in the wars and not come out well, but then again years of greed and corruption in Nigeria have taken their toll on all the military forces not just this ship, if you ask me, it is a credit to the Nigerian navy that they got her there in one piece! Oh and you should have looked at the second pic closer mate, you can see the Nigerian vessels name on the gangway leading from the aft deck of ANZAC 😉 hehehehe.

Thanks Ja Worsley, the first time I have shown off my wobbly handywork (always have had an issue framing the picture correctly). I think the Red streak on the first picture is due to the highly polished nature of the name plac and bell, using a 25 (only a year younger than me 😀 )year old camera is always a bit hit and miss Im afraid. Its pushing me closer to commiting to digital but I must admit I find wet film romantic. I have another film with pics from last years Trafalger day which I have only just taken out of the camera, I can’t remember what is on the film now :p . I will develop it next week and we can all see what treats I have on it.
The funny thing about Sea Zenith is that it is the closest you get to a British CIWS but yet the RN never bought into it.

FedaykinI suppose France has never had its own Falklands scenario to really push the benefits of having rapid fire guns be it crew served all the way up to automated systems like Phalanx and goalkeeper.
I have a hunch that if HMS Coventry had all the crew served 20mm stuff and Phalanx that was later fitted to the Type 42 she would probably survived the attack by the Argentine A4 with dumb bombs. For that matter the Argentine aircraft operating into San Carlos water would of had a harder time I think.
FedaykinI think the SEAD mods are part of AOP to avoid the problems of a fleet within a fleet. Something the RAF is trying to avoid after what happened with the Jaguar, when they had a a number of highly modified aircraft that were falling to bits and a larger number with lot airframe hours sitting in storage and at Cosford which they could not modified due to lack of the required pennies. AOP is basiclly something to fix a major **** up :confused: :confused: with CSP when the AMRAAM datalink was not fitted (without it the AMRAAM is pants as a BVR weapon), and being the reason why the F3 on Telic were fitted with Skyflash.
Fleets within fleets is a common RAF problem. :confused: Part of CSP was sorting that problem within the F3 fleet.
All a symptom of penny pinching within the MOD, hopefully Typhoon won’t suffer this as much.
Talking about fleets within fleets we have a crazy situation of GR1 airframes with heavy flight hours being put through conversion to GR4 whilst we had instructional airframes with far lower hours available. For some reason the RAF deemed the conversion was easier for airframes that had been in service longer and hence through various structural upgrades already which would of had to be applied to the airframes used for instruction basis (phew what a mouthfull).
