I feel a bit torn when it comes to the Future lynx problem. In many respects NH90 and Merlin could meet the requirement but we wouldn’t get licenced production for NH90 as that type has production overcapacity.
I do feel that rather than re-invent the wheel wouldn’t it be better to buy a product improved version of the Super Lynx 300. Its available now and offers significant improvements over the preasent Sea Lynx fleet. Then spend some money on the Sea Skua replacement the RN would like.

I think Beedalls Navy matters page conveys the issue better than I could but basically the RN and the other two services are been driven into the ground with the lack of decent funding. All the supposed cost savings that the Government talk about end up costing us far more. How the heck does PFI save money for the millitary! All that happens is we end up leasing something over a long period for far more money then the outright purchase cost (the Boeing C17 for example).
On top of that the lack of purchases from the MOD is wrecking our native shipyards. How can we retain a native skills base or attract foreign navies to buy our products when our own government doesn’t buy anything. On the subject of millitary ship purchases the Labour partie’s politically induced bias when it comes to the choice of ship yards really angers me. Why is everything going to Scottish shipyards? It seems crazy to me to choose Rosyth (Gordon Browns former seat) as the final assembly yard for CVF when its not actually big enough to fit the proposed design thus requiring alot of expensive update work. We have the Harland and Wolf yard with a slip big enough to build a Nimitz class carrier in Northern Ireland, surely offering great cost savings in the build strategy. The French aren’t being that stupid there using the giant DCN Chantalier Atlantique yard to build their carrier at a much reduced cost!
It makes me seethe sometimes!
The problem is that the MoD dosnt know what to do. They started of with the FSC programme but it rapidly grew to cruiser proportions and therefore far beyond the budget of the MoD, now they are playing with the idea of a split fleet of DDG type ships and corvettes but I have a hunch they will change their mind again.
I totally agree SeaLord, it looks like the type 23’s will have to soldier on for far longer than expected. Even the midlife update which the MOD talk about will probably be minimal.
Considering that routine maintenance for the fleet is being skipped to save money the prospect of any future replacements seem fanciful at the moment. Personally I think the idea of a split buy of DDG and corvette types would be quite good especially as automation technologies seem to be coming of age.
Sometimes I sit back somedays and ponder the wisdom of the type 23 purchase in the first place. Whilst it has prooven to be a very useful type (read backbone of the fleet) the cost of development and the fixed nature of its systems are problematic. I wonder (and this is only a speculative opinion) if a purchase of a licence built variant of the German Meko would of been wiser. The modular nature of its construction and the more attractive through life costs of supporting and updating its systems seem attractive to me. Also we wouldn’t of had to shoulder the initial develoment costs.

Actually on another note recently the Royal Navy has put some consideration into purchasing corvettes.
The RN intends to upgrade the type 23s it has left in service and replace the Batch 3 type 22 with a Type 45 stretch variant equipped for command and land attack. If possible they have looked at replacing the older type 23s with some form of corvette.
Alternatively, weighted/balanced “dummies” for engine dry runs or replacements not prone to damage at a period of work in dry-dock?
Thats probably the answer.

The cleanest bomb ever tested is ironically also the most powerful ever tested!
The Russian Tsar bomb of 1961 was based on a scaled down 100 megaton design. It had a design yield of approximately 50 megatons achieved by removing the uranium fusion tamper of the teritiary (and probably secondary) stage(s) by one made of lead to eliminate fast fission by the fusion neutrons.
A side effect of this was it made the weapon very clean with 97% of the energy coming from fusion reactions. It was still the most powerful bomb ever with an achieved yield of 57 to 60 Megatons.
This weapon was developed in a remarkably short time. On 10 July 1961 Nikita Khruschev met with Sakharov, then the senior weapon designer, and directed him to develop a 100 megaton bomb. This device had to be ready for a test series due to begin in September so that the series would create maximum political impact (a bomb this size is virtually useless militarily). Sakharov returned to Arzamas-16, and selected a design team consisting of Victor Adamskii, Yuri Babaev, Yuri Trunev, and Yuri Smirnov (who later oversaw the transformation of this design into a fielded weapon). The bomb was tested only 14 weeks after the initiation of its design.
The effect of this bomb at full yield on global fallout would have been tremendous. It would have increased the world’s total fission fallout since the invention of the atomic bomb by 25%. The fabrication of the massive parachute disrupted the Soviet nylon hosiery industry. It weighed 27 metric tons. Some were actually stockpiled.
The bomb was air dropped by a Tu-95 strategic bomber piloted by A. E. Durnovtsev (made Hero of the Soviet Union).
If the weapon had been built to its full potential (ie 100 Megatons) it could of destroyed a country the size of Germany.

The Su-33 is a carrier based plane. It doesn’t operate from land bases.
It might take off from a land base with a fuel load but never with a full load of weapons. Land based ops would be ferrying to or from the carrier… it doesn’t operate from a land base.The Su-27KUB is roughly the same weight with the same engines and it clearly states it can take off from carriers with a MTOW of 33 tons.
I am sure Conway probably made the same potted calculations. And I am sure when the Forger was operational the western experts also had lots of mathematical calculations to prove the Forger couldn’t take off from a rolling start and had to take off vertically, just like the mathematical calculations showed the Bear isn’t as fast as it actually is because it is only a propeller driven aircraft…
If Conway can’t be wrong and neither can you that basically means you are not real.
Whilst the Su33 is Russia’s main carrier type I think you will find that if you look at their log books they have mainly operated off land based strips for the last decade rather than the Kuznetsov.
On the rare occasions that the Kuznetsov does sortie it tends to be for a short time and then she spends a lond period in refit.
Even training on a land based deck simulator has been limited considering the only available facility is in the Ukraine and that country wants hard currency for its use.
The Russian navy has no choice but to operate the Su33 mainly as a land based type to keep pilot hours up.
On a side note even American carrier air wings spend a lot of their time operating from land bases rather then a carrier over any five year period.
If the pilot flew the sortie it would be tantemount to suicide, If there was a problem during the flight and ejection was necessary then what if the jammed canopy inhibited the ejection sequence?.
You have to ask yourself if you where sat in an experimental jet would you fly it knowing there was a problem that no one had the solution to?.

Whilst I wouldn’t advocate flying the aircraft with a defective canopy release system in the event of it failing during an ejection it is possible for the seat to go through the canopy on most fighters. I presume this is also the case with the F22’s ejection system, its more dangerous but better than the pilot crash and burning!

The Il76 is overkill for the Serbian armed forces, they would suffer the same problems as buying Su30. In the end its a fairly large multi engine jet transport, the fuel and maintenance costs would be prohibative considering that it would be mainly used for internal work.
About the largest transport Serbia could probably support would be the c130 but a twin engine turboprop would be more suitable to there needs. The c27j is actually quite an expensive aircraft when compared to other twin engine types. The An72 is probably too much for that matter and any purchase will probably be restricted to refurbished AN26 or if the money can stretch to new the CASA cn295. Another possibility could be the Xi’an Y7 from china but that is unlikely.
Serbian Air Force uses An-26s,not An-24.Currently only one of them is in flying condition and will get overhauled.

well they said when they retire the mig 21s and the j-22s they are going to buy the new Su-30 PK i think about 30 of them or something or just one secodroun but i heard also they might also buy some more chopper i think a few mi-24V hinds and a An-72 trasport or 2 An-72s. Beacuse they are in despreate need of more trasnport for the border and stuff.
The Mi24v and the AN72 would be realistic especially as an24 operated by the Serbian airforce are heavily used. Mi24 would be usefull for border and police duties.
Serbia has not got the money to support a jet like the Su30, personel would need to be trained and fuel would need to be bought to feed those thirsty Saturn AL31’s. The Serbian air force can barely afford to keep the jets it has in service in the air. Leasing in many ways would be even more expensive then an out right purchase. Russia can’t afford to just give away 30 brand new fighter jets itself.
The best that Serbia can hope for at the moment is to maintain a corp of proficient pilots to allow them the basis to build up a new force if the economy recovers. The best kind of things for that would be a small amount of cheap trainer types like the PC7 and the L39.
