I don’t think we should be so dismissive of the Sun, it is simply echoing the questions that I have overheard people asking today and that after all is what sells papers.
The underlying question with the benefit of hindsight is a valid one and I don’t expect that manoeuvre will ever be repeated in such close proximity to a busy road.
But I think the point and fact of the matter is that the ‘maneuver’ in question would not usually be done over a main road or for that matter, a built up area during a display, i.e. outside of the airfield.
This is something that only a few people seem to have picked up on.
Something lead to it happening the way it did, and hopefully the AAIB will find out the reason.

Oh dear!
Umm…
Yet more top class ‘journalism’!
So the Sun all of a sudden sees itself as a the judge, jury, and executioner in matters of airshow safety and historic jet operations.
I dare say they, along with all the other newspapers, were saying how wonderful it was to see all those Spitfires and Hurricanes at Biggin Hill for the Adler Tag flypast.

This is good news.
Early days I know, I just hope the opportunity is not lost to restore it back to how it was when it rolled off the Castle Bromwich production line in 1943, i.e. to that modification state, and therefore an accurate example of a mid production MK.IX.

I thought Neil’s piece to camera was appropriate and respectful. If that was what he was wearing when the camera turned up, what is he supposed to do?
Indeed!
I first saw an interview with him on Sky this morning, and thought at last they are talking to someone who has display flying experience, and has flown the Hunter in that environment to, and can give a qualified opinion.
As he stated, only the pilot will know why things happened the way they did.
(I later watched his interviews with the BBC).
It made a very welcome change to some of the so called ‘Experts’ the various media outlets have been talking to!
South Today just aired an interview with a witness whose work used to involve flight simulators, and he gave his explanation and reason for the crash .
I’ve got to say, I don’t think he is right.

How very sad.
Not a good weekend. 🙁

This is a point, similar to the A26 Invader crash at Biggin Hill in 1980, as regards airshow rules and regulations, I was trying to make.
David,
Indeed, as soon as I saw that the Hunter had hit the road, my first thought was how even more of a terrible tragedy this was, and just how many casualties and fatalities there would be.
I’m sure the CAA and all UK Airshow organisers will take a look at the rules, regulations, and safety after today’s tragic accident.

As I said on another forum, I think it’s a bit premature to be discussing the merits of low level looping/vertical maneuvers and how ‘Historic’ aircraft should be displayed at Air Shows etc, when we don’t know if that’s what was intended by the pilot in this case.
Looking at the various bits of footage that have appeared, it seems to me that the accident ‘maneuver’ was not part of the planned sequence, and occurred because something was amiss, causing it to happen this way.
I say this, because the pull up, left roll to the inverted, and pull through were done outside of the airfield (out of direct view of the spectators), when the aircraft appeared to be heading back down the display axis after its first pass.
Something about it doesn’t seem right to me.

Absolutely terrible news.
As it always is when a fatal accident happens at a display, but even more so when it involves members of the public.
