Brahmos and it’s second airborne version for smaller fighters, Brahmos-M

    From Defence Update:-

A model of Brahmos M was displayed at Defexpo 14. As the next generation of the current Brahmos, the missile will have reduced dimmensions, lower weight and higher speed, compared to the current BrahMos. It will be three meter shorter, with a diameter 190mm smaller, compared to the Brahmos. Its weight will be 1500kg, about 500 less than Brahmos. Optimized for airborne and tube-launched submarine applications, Brahmos M will have a range of 300 km (290 for Brahmos) and its speed will be increased to 3.5 Mach (2.8 max in Brahmos). The missile will have stealth features to reduce radar signature and will also have improved electronic counter-countermeasures. The new missile could be operational by 2017, on Indian Su-30MKI, MiG-29 and MiG-29K of the Indian Army and Naval Aviation arm.

DRDO’s Low Frequency Dunking Sonar (LFDS) for anti sumbmarine warfare helicopters.

From the guy who took the picture:-

This (LFDS) is good upto a depth of 350 meters. According to the officials this is working on KA 31 and Westland Helicopters. They are trying for Dhruv also.

ABHAY (Compact Hull Mounted Sonar (HMS) System)

ABHAY is an advanced integrated active cum passive sonar system designed for shallow water ASW platforms. It is specifically targeted for installation on smaller platforms such as ASW corvettes, coastal surveillance and patrol vessels. It employs advanced adaptive signal and information processing techniques for detection, tracking & classification of targets. The hardware architecture is based on state of the art open-architecture processor technologies that will enable smooth up-grade of the system capabilities in the future. A compact transducer array, modular front-end signal conditioning hardware and high efficiency switched mode power amplifiers make up the rest of the system.

It seems like all the antennas jutting out from it have been made conformal to the body. The Airframe itself is less boxy now. Compare it with sclae model displayed last defexpo.

I’m taking it 22.5 degree is max AoA, this is quite important info for me, thanks

Astra ? No, not really. The max AoA hasn’t been disclosed.

A preliminary study on the performance of low aspect
ratio wings of Astra missile at high angles of attack (>30o
    )
had been carried out. In this respect, recently, two variants
of Astra configurations have been proposed by the designers
and they were flow analyzed using CERANS. The configurations
are one with low aspect ratio wings and the other configuration
with a high aspect ratio wing, the planform area being same
for both. It had been found that the axial force due to the
high AR wing is higher by about 20 % due to higher wave
drag than the low AR wing, whereas the changes due to
normal forces and pitching moments are just about 7%
higher for the high AR wing. The flow contours and its
complex pattern around high AR configuration are shown
    in Fig. 2.

Rustom-2 MALE UAV (grainy Chinese style pictures ;)) first flight will be by June.

Ground based 25 Kw Gas Dynamic laser (Aditya) tech demonstrator. (reports say it has been successfully tested against airborne targets)

    http://i.imgur.com/2PnTAan.jpg

2014 may also see forward movement in the area of directed energy weapons with Indian efforts in the arena of solid state lasers being unveiled. Much work has already been done in the field of gas dynamic laser(GDL) and chemical oxygen iodine lasers (COIL). For instance enclosed below(see Fig I) is the ‘solid model’ of a 25 kilowatt (KW) vehicle mounted GDL developed by DRDO’s Laser Science and Technology Centre (LASTEC) that has been successfully tested against airborne in the past. The auto laser pointing system used on this ‘transportable’ GDL originally belongs to a 100 KW GDL. Solid state systems with 20 per cent laser efficiency have also been developed.

Bit old piece of information about the RFP issued for five fleet support ships (FSS) in April 2013.

From Geopolitics magazine July 2013 issue
    http://www.geopolitics.in/june2013.aspx Pg 32-34
    – The ships would be in ‘Buy Global’ procurement head (ie imports) as all Indian yards are chock full of orders.
    – capable of handling 16 ton helicopters
    – Projected size: length 200m, beam 25m, displacement around 40,000 tons, draught<10m
    – Payload of 20,000 tons LSHSD, 2500 tons AVCAT, 1000 tons fresh water, 1400 tons feed water
    – minimum of 60 day endurance; 12,000 nm at 16 knots, 9000 nm at 20 knots with 25% on board fuel left
    – crew of 190
    – two L-band radar, one E/F band radars
    – should be able to maintain a speed of 20 knots at 40 degree Celcius, must have good fuel economy at 15 knots
    – Seaworthy up to sea state 8, helicopter operations up to sea state 5, combat capable till sea state 5, survivable up to sea state 9, capable of replenishment at sea role till sea state 5
    – First delivery in three years of signing contract with one every six months.

This is going to cost a bomb.

What is the (new?) UCAV called if i may ask, it’s not Taranis and it’s not Neuron. Thanks.

    PS: It’s FCAS DPPP right?

They should call it Jaguar 2.

Shore Based Test Facility for STOBAR operations has been declared operational. We should see some arrested recoveries by MiG-29K and NLCA in the doming days.

Apparently, it’s been semi-functional for a while now.
