And why would the Police train at an aircraft museum? Duxford perhaps, they could then do some drills with ‘flyers’, but Hendon is all static stuff. You really must take me for half a lemon (French expression).

Hmm. Just noticed that the Science museum has bags of airframes – anyone know if they are all on site? We could make a weekend of it, if we can find a hotel in everyones budget and people fancy it. Nice meal in the evening etc…
Hendon to central London is not too far, so we could do both, (depending on how in depth each person wants to go) but I figure if we begin with Hendon, we could then decide on the day what to do (and the IWM is fairly small from memory). If we go for a weekend option, well, there is loads of scope, Cabinet War rooms, science museum, army museum, etc.
Ok, dates: I can’t make the w/e of the 30th personally, so, who can’t make other dates in Feb / March? If we can find one date that we are all free on, brilliant, if not, well, we can take a vote on the best one to go for.
I love Hendon. It has a Typhoon, a 609 Spit, and some jet thing in 609 colours too I believe. IWM has another 609 Spit. Be nice when they have the Tempest MKV there as well. Mind you, a lot of police around Hendon – maybe there was an operation on or something? Saw loads of them.

SnapperRE: Travel To Northern Cyprus
I viewed the Israeli / Syrian border in the Golan Heights, and the town of Quneitra from both sides. Also, the Lebanese border from the Israeli side. (Ran out of time in Lebanon due to an emergency at home, so couldn’t complete that set!). The same with East and West Germany (shortly after the opening of the borders) Quite fascinating to see two sides of an unfriendly fence. Beirut was a fascinating place, absolutely amazing, and what great people I met to chat too! I can’t be arsed with beaches.

The elderly suffered extreme hardship in the war – death, hunger etc – to make this country a better place for scroungers and spongers – of which the immigrants are only a part. The country is filled with parasites – no need to pick only on the imported variety, we grew the scag – heads ourselves.

He can preach to me when I march up Whitehall. I am absolutely disgusted by what has happened to this country that I call my home. A country to which (in the guise of the Monarch) I swore allegiance to. I would NEVER swear allegiance to this current Tsar. Restore the monarchy, rebuild the workhouses, and the prisons. Then at least burglars may get jailed (you missed that one). Bring back capital punishment and respect for people, get rid of ridiculous (and expensive) litigation, and be proud to say that you are English, or Scottish, or Irish.

Any idea what squadron? Was perhaps a Yarmouth boy, but parents moved to Norwich by the time the details were taken. Thats what happened with Johnny Wiseman. He may have crashed around Yarmouth,but there were plenty of airfields around. Ludham springs immediately to mind.

Yes, thanks for sharing those pics with us. I shall, in return, share an extract from the diary, which I just now read:
“Jan 24th 1942. Its over 3 weeks since I last made an entry in this diary, and since then things have gone from bad to worse. The squadron has done very little operational flying and has not had one combat. Against that we have a record number of accidents. Luckily only one was fatal. P/O Van Schaick tore the oleo leg off aircraft ‘T’ on Jan 3rd. Sgt Andrews, a new pilot from the USA, did an aileron turn in ‘V’ our veteran kite and tore the mainplane off. The aircraft disintegrated and pieces were scattered over East Stoke. This happened on January 10th, the same day Sgt Dickson, a New Zealand pilot had to force land ‘R’ at Southend with his engine seized up solid.”
This, of course, has little to do with the topic in hand, but I thought it might be interesting reading.

Yeah, Ok, point taken. They are still Spitfires (or whatever a/c) when they have been rebuilt (or scratchbuilt) and should be tearing along. That is NOT what I’m against. I WANT to see them roaring along, banking etc. Its the ‘Red – Arrow’ type stuff that I am not keen on, and at low level you get the safety aspect of it. And no, I don’t want to see them static – heaven forbid. But I don’t want to watch them burn either. Or the guy inside them. In all honesty, formation aero teams bore the ##### out of me. The Breitling guys don’t – they are the only ones who don’t. Even then, I question whether I want to see 4 planes miles away frigging around as if they were one plane, or one plane going like a bat out of hell closer. For me, its the the second choice for sure, every time.

Indeed they were. When absolutely neccessary. Hence bollockings for beating up airfields, or for stressing wings / fuselages / engines. I have in front of me, right now, on my desk, open, the second of two groundcrew diaries (Flight Sergeants in chrage of Flights on an operational Fighter Squadron). How many times do you think I have read the words write – off, or ‘beyond unit repair’ in the last couple of days? Mainplane write – off, airscrew write off, etc etc. Did Spits scream along taps out all the time? No.
And, they were built for a limited lifespan – months, rather than years. We are asking decades, or ‘forever’ from those airframes we see at Duxford (and other places) each time a displays on. Stick a Tornado or something through that aero if you must – after all, the RAF have the time and money to train pilots / teams together to a greater extent than a private individual, and can replace whatever bits they need to.
Scream about at high speed – yes. For a while.
