This would be quite a news item if its not the pilots fault., apparently he’s OK, but the aircraft is a writeoff.

Where are you getting this information from?

    First RAF Tranche 2 Typhoons

This site suggests that the RAF will be get the first 6 Tranche 2 Typhoons and not the Saudis. Is this correct?

India, could well be the dark horse here, rumours abound about there being a deal being done with India for a large number of Typhoons.

I guess these rumours were for Hawks and not Typhoons:

They may be F.Mk 4s (as opposed to FGR.Mk 4s)…..

If there are any RAF Block 8s – eg if they don’t all go to Saudi.

You’ve asked this before, and the answer is the same.

Block 8 has the same software as Block 5, but hosted on the new hardware, and without the Austere software package.

So the block 8 Typhoons will actually be less capable than the RAF block 5’s?

My understanding is that the block 5’s do not have any air to air use of the PIRATE sensor. Will the PIRATE sensor be of any use at all on the block 8’s?

The austere package will not be included into block 8 aircraft. The software is the same as for block 5 that’s correct. Block 8 just lays the hardware base for tranche 2 aircraft eliminating hardware obsolences such as old computers not in production any more being replaced by new ones. There will be several hardware changes, but to make full use of them a new software would be required. Some systems feature their own software which will be improved, but there will be no improvement in capability in any significant way.

If the austere package is not included presumably the block 8’s will be designated as F2’s?

I understand that no air to air functionality is currently available in the PIRATE sensor. Will the PIRATE functionality also remain unchanged in the block 8’s?

    Japan not buying Typhoon?

This web page suggests that Japan will not be buying the Typhoon but will instead be upgrading it’s F15s. Is this true?

    Nils,

There has been no OFFICIAL change from the original plan, which was for 7 squadrons, EXCLUDING 17(R) and 29(R).

Numberplates have not been decided beyond the first three (3, 11 and 6). 25 looks MOST unlikely to make the jump, even if we get the full seven squadrons (expect 43, 111 and 56, and perhaps 92 or 74, while 54 or 41 may still re-join the frontline fast jet fleet).

If we are officially to get 7 squadrons, where are the 6th and 7th squadrons expected to be based, Leeming?

Does the RAF plan to use the Helmet Mounted Display on the block 5 Typhoons?

I still have not seen any pictures of Typhoons with the Litening pod.
When will 17sqn start testing them?

As a unit flyaway, the Austrians paid €62 m per aircraft, and under the terms of the original agreement, the price to EF partner nations has to be lower than the export price. The UK price quoted includes system and some support costs, and the NAO do not dispute the price of £45.45 m for Tranche 1 aircraft, and £42 m for Tranche 2. That’s about €60 m.

Why does a Tranche 2 cost less than a Tranche 1, surely it should be more?

According to AFM the Saudi’s will get the first 24 Tranche 2 batch 8 Typhoons that were destined for the RAF, meaning that Leuchars will not get any Typhoons until 2011.

Does anyone know if this will effect the fate of 25 sqn due to disband next spring?

Presumably this will not be good news for the former pilots of 6sqn who where expecting to rejoin 6 sqn sometime next year.

How else will this deal effect the RAF?

    @whitfc,
in the metrical system 1 t = 1000 kg. For aviation typically the english/american pound is used (1 lb = 454 g). I personally stick with the 11 t empty weight figure and 5 t internal fuel, as long as no other confirmation for the content of this video can be found. But of course is everyone free to believe and stick with what he wants.

An RAF Typhoon pilot (a display pilot in this case) is a good a source as it gets. After all it’s his job to know the weight of the aircraft at any point in time. I would be inclined to believe him, if only we knew which units of tons he was referring to!

I was using; one short ton (2000 lb), which is 90.72% of a tonne. This gives the figure of 35000lb’s. Lol I used a google converter and that is what it came up with; 17.5 ton’s = 35000 lb’s, and 17.5 tonnes = 38600 lbs, so actually I think your right,;) I do not really know what a “short ton” is:confused:

But I would have thought it would have been higher for the typhoon in any case. Slightly greater then 1 to 1 with 2 ASRAAM and full internal fuel seems less than I would expect. Has anyone got any ideas of the T/W ration when on QRA duty?

A short ton is a US ton. I would have thought it unlikely for an British pilot who would have been educated using metric tonnes to be referring to US tons.

Anyone know which unit of ton RAF pilots would more commonly use?

As for your question regarding T/W for QRA. Do you know what the internal fuel capacity in litres of the Typhoon is? We know this weighs 5.5 tonnes(?)We should then be able to calculate the weight of 2000 litres of drop tank fuel. The AMRAAM 120 weighs 330lbs so we should then be able work out the approx T/W. All we need to know is the likely unit of tonnes as used by RAF pilots.
