Thank you Tom.
It is an interesting example, but it isn’t strictly a case of ‘tolerance’…..more one of surface finish.
I can understand exactly how such a ‘failure’ in an air-cooled cylinder could occur if the surface finish is ‘too good’ and has no imperfections to retain lubricating oil and that leads to increased wear, overheating and, ultimately, to a piston seizure.
At one time ‘cylinder honing’ was done to remove imperfections; now honing is mainly used to introduce them!
I take your point Creaking Door, but if the bore was that perfect, you would glaze bust it before service, for the rings to bed in?.
That was interesting Seafuryfan, that would make sense with air cooled engine but at the same time the tolerances should be there to account for heat expansion.
Tom still unclear whether you mean Retro Track and Air or Maurice Hammond who is casting new heads.
Thanks Mark12, does anyone know it’s recent history and what it comprises altogether. Incidentally, apologies for my bad spelling in my original post, bit rushed.
An idiot can do all sorts of thing if they’ve got the money, but I didn’t see anything mentioned about cost in the previous posts
Yes all the best Edgar
I hope they had cleared this with the CAA before the filming as the authorities are taking actions against drone operators who break the rules and that’ll include those who co-operate with them.
So long as there was a 500′ separation between them, either horizontal or vertical there is no problem that I can see and also it was obviously consensual.
That’s really nice, thanks ever so much for posting.
ericmunk, yes I thought maybe there too, but wanted confirmation. Thanks
I see there is a Pitts 12 on there as well. anyone know where in South Wales that this stuff is?
Bit late in replying, but thanks for the update Geoff.
In-cockpit video and audio were running throughout the flight, and were recovered from the crash site, so the NTSB had a pretty clear idea of exactly what went on in the cockpit.
My point exactly, if it was a loss of situational awareness the pilot would have crashed regardless even if he hadn’t let his passenger have a go
None of us were there, so we don’t know what exactly happened in the cockpit so who’s to say if the pilot was right or wrong. Neither are here to give their side of the story. Sad old job no matter what.
Replic’Air will build 2 (two) D.551.
Let’s hope one of the magazines takes note and does an in depth report on this project. I for one would be keen to see it
ok thanks Moggy
