No pictures but I really like your website – hope that cheers you up! I’d especially like to hear about the days when BAe/Blackburn’s (or whoever) briefly tested the Buccaneers from Driffield…
‘From Hull, Hell and Halifax’ by Chris Blanchett – another cracking book – large format – now out of print I believe. Covers all the WW2 bomber fields in Yorkshire… I also remember seeing a book about Burn airfield in the Barbican Bookshop in York, you might try there or at YAM for a copy. There’s a picture of the Bloodhounds at Breighton on realaero.com, albeit rather feint. Anyone interested in RAF Riccall (just down the A19 from Burn and 5 or 6 miles from Breighton) might also like to check out a newly published history of the village which has a section about the airfield with a few rare pix – available from the Selby Times I believe.
Sunny VIII and Doug Arnold’s Petie 2nd were both at Duxford for short periods during the filming for use in the background as they were not repainted into drab.
Tony Andrews
Thanks for that – and to Cestrian for the photo showing ‘Sunny’ being taxied out.
Love all the pix! I remember a good friend of mine telling me that her ‘charge’ (or rather, her bosses’ charge) – P-51 ‘Sunny VIII’ – had a cameo appearance in Memphis Belle… I’ve never actually managed to spot it though I do believe that Rod Dean gets a pilots credit (I seem to remember seeing it written as Ron Dean!).
Anyone shed anything on that…?
Sandtoft is a former RAF airfield which is now operated as a civil airfield complete with an active flying club, trolley bus museum and, more interestingly, home to the Jet Provost Club’s JP’s. The aircraft in Benyboys pictures were part of the Imperial Aviation Group’s inventory and were to form the basis of an aviation museum.
I looked through an old Wrecks and Relics last night (the yellow one – only a few years old!) where the Gannet was listed as being airworthy…
I’d be interested to know anything about the current custodians of these aircraft and what plans, if any, might exist to ensure the aircraft’s future wellbeing.
The episode was filmed at Breighton, on the airfield and in the club house. The Maggie and Jungmeister are owned by Rob Fleming, who also owns the Hurricane. We don’t, however, grow yellow Fuscias… as far as I know!
Hope he’s CORGI approved…
RACo’s Tony Smith flew the Hurricane for the cameras at Breighton last Spring – I’ll be interested to see how they integrate a fighter from the 1940’s with a storyline set in the 1960’s…
Thanks Duxfordhawk… I’ll pass that on.
Davski is angry
No – just likes being attached to his kneecaps! Plenty to look forward to at Breighton though – just have a little patience my dears!
As always, great pictures Gareth. Nice to have met you and Martin yesterday (at last!).
Thanks Ewan,
By recently I mean that I’d seen colour pictures in Flypast in the late twentieth century (!), from which I drew the conclusion that this aircraft was a possible/the most probable future flier – it carried the legend “Spirit of Butler” in recognition of Cecil Butler’s epic flight to Oz, my surname’s Butler so it struck a bit of a chord and I’ve loved them since…
I thought that G-ABUS’s C of A had expired, have you seen it flown recently? As for G-ABTC, I’ve tried to trace this one’s location for a while but to no avail so thanks for the tip-off! I’ve seen pictures of ‘TC flying relatively recently so I guess it would be a great contender for a rebuild…?
Flooding back – what a weekend it was! The Black and Blue pic is pretty special but I also really like the Chippy – I can almost see Mr Simms gritting those teeth and yanking back on the stick to waste that elusive balloon! Passenger seems remarkably oblivious!
Well done Steven.
Is that ‘…a 109’ or ‘A109’??!
