Pleased to hear that Deighton’s ‘Bomber’ is being made into a movie – more details please! ‘Goodbye Micky Mouse’ is excellent, read it twice, incredibly moving, thoroughly enjoyed… however, I think that Alex Henshaw’s autobiography ‘Flight of the Mew Gull’ gets my vote, it would make a superb film – I’d heartily recommend the book to anyone who hasn’t read it.
Ah-haaaa! (Alan Partridge stylee). Great pix. “Missy Wong…” has a different lady lounging on the rudder in the John Rigby pix (Warbirds Worldwide Number 5 – found it!).
I thought it was Old Crow in the RAF scheme at Mildenhall. When origionally imported it was in a camo Australian scheme. G-HAEC was also spotted briefly in Saving Private Ryan.
You could be right about ‘Old Crow’, Yak 11 Fan – OFMC operated their’s for a while I believe, whilst their own was sick. Do you remember that the same OFMC display at Mildenhall had a fantastic Spitfire duo routine in the middle – the like of which I’ve never seen since unfortunately.
I’m sure G-HAEC was all silver for a short time too, with RAAF markings (similar to SEAC roundels if the grey matter is working correctly), looking forward to JDK’s pix just to prove my sanity!
RNHF and BBMF at RAF Church Fenton shows in the late ’60’s/early ’70’s I guess – loved seeing the Sea Furies! Remember seeing a silver B-17 one year, my Dad proudly reaffirming that ‘it’s nowt near as good as t’lanky!’ – I expect that was ‘Sally B’?
“Ding Hao” in Memphis Belle, “Missy Wong from Hong Kong” in Empire of the Sun – I think. There were some lovely pictures of the aircraft wearing its ‘Empire…’ scheme in an early Warbirds Worldwide… perhaps someone on the forum remembers, mine are all boxed in the attic at the moment. It also wore a RAF scheme at Mildenhall one year, and an Australian all-over ‘silver’ scheme… sorry I can’t be more precise.
Fantastic pictures Gareth – well done (I might be emailing you later!!). Shame the Buchon isn’t photographed from the other side as it looked great with the cowlings and panels complete and fitted. It really is a case of waiting for the modification to be approved and signed off, and since the season is drawing to a close and the grass getting wetter, Tony Smith (RAC MD) has hinted that he’s comfortable with the idea of having a completed and airworthy Buchon tucked-up in the hangar until next season.
The weekends Spitfire appearance was a last minute decision – Tony had originally planned to fly over to Goodwood to pick up the Mew Gull (which had been displayed as a static) but seeing the huge crowd at Breighton, altered his itiniary slightly – much to our benefit.
I stayed in the Cal Neva hotel (once owned by Frank Sinatra!) on the shore of Lake Tahoe last year and drove into Reno every day – approx a 40 minute journey over the Sierra Nevada mountains. Brilliant. Wish I was going again this year…
The Buchon would be flying now if it was up to us (ie: it’s almost certainly fliable) – an often quoted comment at Breighton is that the paperwork matches the aircraft kg for kg…! That’s about as much help as I can be at the moment. I know that they guys are cracking on with things as best they can, the Hurricane has developed a small coolant leak which is a minor distraction too.
The Prom appearance at Castle Howard is usually just before dusk, but I would phone/email HAC for confirmation because I’m only going on what has happened in the past. Also, I have no doubt that the other event organisers in this part of the world will be trying to poach an appearance for their own events.
Breighton’s Black and Blue will be at Sherburn by the way.
If you have a means of transport you can toddle up to Pocklington after Saturdays show and see Charlie Brown fly BM597 over to Castle Howard and back… and Sherburn Aero Club have a small airshow on Sunday afternoon that basically takes advantage of transitting participants to Elvington, plus a couple of ‘locals’ – how much aviation do you want?!
anyone know who was flying the 3 aircraft in the last shot?
Pete Thorn often flew the Spitty – met him at Duxford some years later – oh what tales!
Is that Snoopy I can see trying to escape out front?
Can’t believe that I almost missed these! You’re a talented bunch! Looked out for you on Sunday Chris… guess the Mrs got the better of you! All the best for your impending addition.
Wow! Well done Gareth! First pix I’ve seen from Sunday’s show.
The commentator at Woodford a few years ago said that a USAF F-15 once pulled into a loop at a previous Woodford show, disappeared into cloud and completed the loop at Ringway… don’t know if that’s one of these ‘ere urban myths though!
