    It’s just you, I think.

As you said yourself you made all those statements with incomplete information and that I think is where the official position is at the moment – there is still incomplete information on the density of the cloud layers

I think that consideration may have to be given to finding an unconventional approach to tackling the problem. The scientists are beginning to talk about the probability of the eruption continuing for some time to come and the high wind prognosis is for little change for another week at least, as I understand it.

In these circumstances what has been to date an inconvenience for some will become a serious problem for many. We will begin to remember that we are an island once more and the blinkered anti-flying green eco-wotsits will realise just how crucial air transport and air travel is.

I agree, I think an unconventional approach is called for and I suspect the way we look at passenger and freight transport will change and that we may see more airline/railway cooperation.

I’ve recewnly bought a logging program for the lap top and am entering spotting details from my trips to the US in 1991/92/93 and am amazed at the carnage that has been wreaked on the 727/737/747/Dc-10/L1011 fleets that I saw at the time.

    Gone,all gone…

First they steal our cod, then they steal our money and now they are trying to ruin our airline industry. WILL THEY STOP AT NOTHING?!!!!!!!
I think we should have finished them off during the cod war!

At what point do airlines start talking to the railway companies to run relief services through the Chunnel to somewhere on the continental mainland where long distance flights are operating?

So let me ask the daft question that everyone should be asking! As the dust doesn’t show up on radar and the planes can’t fly in it, how do they know when it is safe to fly? Balloons?

Satellite sensors I would imagine. There are some interesting false colour pictures of the plume available today.

Will NATS pay compensation to the thousands of people whose travel plans have been disrupted?

And all the other air navigation service providers as well? Because it’s not just a UK problem.

    Press release from EUROCONTROL

    http://www.eurocontrol.int/corporate/gallery/content/public/docs/pdf/pressreleases/2010/100415_Volcanic_Ash_Statement_final.pdf

    The key points being:

At present most air traffic in the north of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden is suspended. These restrictions will be extended to cover the southern United Kingdom area in the coming hours.

The main north Atlantic east bound flow arrived at European airports with little disruption. Routes to handle the afternoon westbound flow have been moved to the south to avoid the volcanic ash zone. However, it is expected that this flow of traffic will be disrupted.

Doesn’t look good until at least 1800 tonight but then look at the linked graphic below for the expected spread of the plume and the height reached…
