It’s certainly possible, I have the main movements from the Scan archives and for June 1969, it mentions EC-AVZ seperately as well to the list I have already mentioned but gives the same date. For July 1969 it states “nothing of interest”. These things are not 100% accurate anyway. As a matter of interest it shows a Finnair Caravelle arriving from Brussels (OH-LSE) on 29th August 1969. I never knew about the Iberia service until I was walking through the terminal one day in June 1969 and saw an Iberia Poster advertising the service. How I wish I had tried to get hold of one of the posters.
Apologies to all for the thread drift but it was about Caravelles!! 😀
OK,my last post about Edinburgh and Caravelles but.. I think sufficient time has passed for me to admit to being a former SCAN editor and I think I may have been there for the Finnair.
I’ll start a separate thread about some other old Turnhouse Caravelle musings
Sterling Caravelles were a regular sight at Ringway when I was a lad.
Every Thursday afternoon, if my memory serves me well. 🙂
Caravelles? It was Sterling DC-6s when I started. In fact OY-BAS was the first registration I ever wrote down as a junior spotter in June 1969.
Russia is not near to being the the second most dangerous place to fly in the world, the Russian aviation authorities have certainly improved their act in the last few years. I would fly in Russia, and have done so in the past.
Second most dangerous country to fly in? Try Indonesia…
I would most certainly agree that Indonesia seems to have had major problems in recent years
I have a picture of a Hispania Caravelle at Glasgow in May 1986, the last ones operated into Glasgow in October 1986 with the 737s taking over the following year. They folded in 1989.
Iberia’s experiment with Caravelles out of Turnhouse to Barcelona was a bit of a disaster due to operational problems at Turnhouse. Only 3 services
were operated
EC-AVZ – 14th June 1969
EC-ARJ – 21st June 1969
EC-AVY – 28th June 1969
The remaining flights were diverted to Abbotsinch.
I think there were more than 3 flights because I saw EC-AVZ on the 12th July 1969 (I don’t have access to my full records for 1969)
Especially as the numbers have been published in British newspapers
I just took issue with the view that Russian air safefety record runs a close second to that of Africa, esspecially as the majority of accidents in recent years seem to be with Antonov An-2s.
Never seen a Shadow with twin booms!:D
Amy is my Queen!
Oh yes, you’re absolutely right. ZHR needs to engage brain before hitting keyboard early in the morning.
CFM Shadow?
This is no surprise. I would imagine Russia would come a close second.
Why would you imagine that?
It wouldn’t be a passenger jet then, would it?
I believe it’s possible to jump out the back of a 727 though.
You could ask D B Cooper….
If so, has anybody told Sikorsky with their SH-60 Seahawks?
Yes, NASA did do it with a B720 and a DC-6/7 but that was for legitimate reasons. There was also a story that an ex BA B707 was crashed for a film (possibly at Machrahanish).
However, I dont really buy the pilots bailing out bit…
I prefer the OV-1 Mohawk a snip at $175,000…
Caravelles used to fly into Turnhouse on the French rugby charters every other year and every time we would wonder if this was the last year of the French Caravelles.
Sadly, that time came to pass.
Come to think of it Iberia used to run a Turnhouse-Barcelona scheduled flight on a Saturday night with Caravelles for a while as well. Many memories of wondering whether my bus home would be stopped by the traffic lights protecting the road that went through the underrun area of runway 13 as the Caravelle landed…
That’s really tragic news. I saw this some years back at a small field in the boondocks whilst I was driving from vegas to San Diego. Very sad indeed.
