    It’s interesting the comment made by the pilot supposedly admitting to ‘falling asleep’ whilst flying it to Singapore. Hmmm. And if it was intercepted by another air force en-route..?

    The future Mrs ZHR is there at the moment for a training course and she mentioned that they were doing a spotter’s package. She didn’t invite me there overnight in case I spent more time looking at planes rather than her…

    I would imagine that the insurers will recover a lot of their money by having the aircraft stripped for spares.

    If only the Buccaneer Society was in existance back then, we would have had a field day or a few weeks as the case may have been 🙁

    I think they were there for quite a while. Plus the day I visited there were two dumped at Lossiemouth as well. Amongst the S2s there was also the grey/white nose of an S1 IIRC. All very sad.

    Hope someone can help, cos my head now hurts..

    If I assume that an airliner is travelling at 35000 ft and I know that angle that I’m looking at it then can I work out how far away along the ground it is.

    I’ve tried looking up sine, cosine and tan (Not used them since school) but totally confused myself :confused:

    Cheers

    Dare I bowl a googly by reminding you that the earth is curved…:p

    I learned this mnemonic at school (55 years ago):
    Some Officers Have Curly Auburn Hair To Offer Attraction
    Sine = Opposite over Hypotenuse
    Cosine = Adjacent over Hypotenuse
    Tangent = Opposite over Adjacent
    If you know the angle and the height (the “Opposite” side of the triangle in this case) you can work out the Adjacent side of the triangle (distance along the ground).
    Go figure!

    hahaha

    At school I was taught the name of a great american indian

    SOHCAHTOA

    and it has remained with me for life 🙁

    I know the Tracker flew past later but surely it was a P-3 that did the initial drop?

    That’s correct and the location is the Aviation Warehouse site at El Mirage near the southern side of Edwards

    No, we hadn’t made any prior arrangements. We (my russian wife and I and our two young kids) were on holiday at Lake Seligor and on the way back our friend remembered that there was a helicopter museum nearby.

    He did all the talking. We were asked to wait at the gate and an officer came up to escort us down to the museum. He soon twigged I wasn’t russian but it didn’t bother him.

    I could take all the shots I wanted in the rather crowded museum but he was very twitchy about anything else. They had a Mil-26 opened up for us to clamber onboard with a load of local school kids in it. The moment I opened my mouth was a wonder to behold.

    From the museum you could see the assorted dumped helicopters at the northern end of the field but you couldn’t really see the southern ramps.

    It would have been possible to take shots outside the base of the choppers in the circuit but we were in a hurry to get back to Moscow as our friend was going back to Lake Seligor that day.

    Back in 2005 we asked at the gate and got into see the museum which is a quite a long way into the base but very close to the landing areas. It was very busy whilst we were there with pairs of Mils of al kinds flying circuits.
