I seem to remember that a 747 was brought down some years back with the likely cause being a consignment of batteries which overheated

Of course there is a future for airships – especially in the ‘black-ops’ area. There was a wonderful clip of film circulating recently of the Lockheed Martin airship.

Looking around the general area, you can see one of the gate guards amongst the trees on the way into the base, the MiG-21 on a pole on the main road from Bykovo and the Yak-42 test shell in the TsAGI buildings.

To the south of the main hangar, 55°33’16.56″N 38° 7’14.75″O ? Looks almost like an ekranoplan of sorts.

That’s it. I had originally typed that I thought it was a flying boat but deleted it before I posted. Ekranoplan is a probably a better guess though.

Do you mean the M-55 Geophysika on the ramp – between the Tu-16 and Il-18 ??

    Ken

No, it’s buried away amongst the buildings away from the ramps. It almost looks as if it has canards at the nose. I don’t have GE here at work so I can’t post a picture of it.

No idea what the “something else” is yet, Arthur, but I’m investigating. I have a pretty nice overhead view of Zhukovskiy from an old IAPR issue that I’m going to compare with this one to see if there was something in that spot that maybe hasn’t moved.

Also, did you notice the Tu-128 at Rzhev?

I need to rescan this photo from 1993 but there was a radar nosed Tu-104 dumped in the trees.

Note there is also a twin boomed aircraft in the buildings south of the myasichev hangars

I presume that we are talking only about the last flight of HB-IGH rather than the last flight of a DC-8? I only say this because I understood that ATC ltd at Lasham were expecting a further year’s work servicing a couple of DC-8s at Lasham.

…which is why I suggested B-class marks, such as G-52-XXX

I’ll believe you – they all look the same to me, especially if they don’t have Tupolev or Yak or Illyushin on them

    How about B-class marks?
