Nice photos was just driving along the A30 when the SQ landed(9V-SPO), has to go to a customer at Hatton. Shame they changed runways to 27R as normal. My first Etihat too, must had missed the E145 though. Nice to get JA707J 777 shortly before these.

Is anyone else fascinated by abandoned aviation grounds?

    Absolutely!

    My web site: http://www.ghostbase.org

One day I will get off my a– and get it all completed 😉

Would love to get into Eastern Europe and see some of the old bases there.

I see you are trying to get into Dunsfold? Went there a few years ago for the ‘last ever fly in’ and its pretty much what you can see on ‘top Gear’. They have a flying concert there this year if you want to take a look.
Im a bit obsessed by old fields myself espically Woodley(Miles aircraft, Heralds, closed 1962) where almost all the hangars and offices remain, the airfield being a housing estate. And recently have been visiting Croydon a lot for work. Also the disued part of Blackbushe imagineing what it must have been like with Comets,C-124s,Connies DC-6’s etc!

Aah that explains it, its history for what its worth
G-APJb ex VR259 first flight 11/11/59,cof a 6/5/50 Hearts & Essex Aero Club Stapleford,Southend Corporation 3/61,DP Golding Thruxton 12/66,JF Coggins Coventry 3/73. Its certinally not pictured at any of its bases.
Sadly I no longer have my copy of Putnams British record breaking and racing aircraft or I could tie down its racing history.

Aaah air races, the Kings cup was mainly ran from Coventry 54-66, Tollerton(deff not this photo) 67-68. Other main race was the National Air races that were at Halfpenny Green 66-69. I still can work out what the type is either!

What airport is closest to Farnborough?
I may try and go, provided I can get my parents to agree and that we’re not on holiday!

LHR,LGW and Southampton are closeish. From LHR you can get the railair coach to Woking then a train, Farnborough main station is two stops down. For LGW the trains to Reading stop at North Camp every hour I think. From Southampton airport station again I think its every hour to Farnborough Main station. Farnborough main and North Camp are about 15 min walk to the show site if the busses are packed. Its probably the easiest show in the UK to do by public transport.

I will be encamped for both the show and arrivals week as its only a 5 min drive for me!2002 was dissapointing as the An140 and Embraer 170 both left on the Wedensday, and some others(C-17,A330?) had left by the public days.
2004 promises lots of US military participation and lots of bizjets(they have their own park Mon-Wed). Plus there were plenty of visiting bizjets etc in the mornings of the show days.
Forget about the whole trade days thing, anybody can buy tickets on the website for the trade days(no under 16’s though). Just turn up looking resonable and all will be ok. And at £25 thay are not much dearer than public tickets. I did go on the public Saturday as I had spare trade tickets last time and traffic was hell, so I walked!
The arrivals week is normall good, very busy thurs-sat am. Had a An12 and An124 support aircraft last time. Not so good for viewing from outside as it used to be but Eelmoor Bridge is great for photos if 06 is in use or for heavies rolling to the end of 24.
I will have loads of info on my website http://www.farnboroughairport.biz about viewing. Plus a daily update on the arrivals and the first photos in the world(again) of the arrivals.

Did they get the tail too? Its hangar at Filton was too low I think so the tail was removed, hope they kept it!

Having been to both in the last month I think it would be a big dissaster for GA in this country if Barton closed. Apart from a few strips that would only leave Blackpool as GA friendly in the NW. MAN may be ok for the flying schools but most of Bartons residents are PFA types and microlights best at home on grass. I can’t somehow seeing a 747 at the hold waiting for a flexwing to land! Hopefully it will be open for many years to come. A usefull addition though would be a GA field in the Stoke area.
On a similar point I see Southampton have backtracked on evicting their GA residents. They originally said they needed the room for scheduled services, although the place seems empty whenever I go there!

What is their idea with foreign spotters? Are they going to demand passes from them? Where can I get them? And how will they check it out. Those aviation organizations I know of allow everyone in as long as the contribution is paid. No extensive security checks or anything…

The idea is to try it out here in the UK for this year for those who are group members allready. Then maybe next year extend it to others. I would guess people like Scramble in the Netherlands would be involved too. Its real use would be if it could have a impact on spotting in the US. I agree about the fact that anybody could join. The best way that I see if for each major airport to be part of the scheme and you would need to go and present your passport/driving licence and perhaps a little quiz to prove you are a spotter.

I thought AF was almost bankrupt so how did they get the money for this?
KLM has always ‘punched above its weight’ in terms of services for a small country. Hopefully they will exisit as seperate companys for a long time to come.
