This scheme took a bit of a bashing on the spotters mailing lists a few weeks ago. The problem is that you need to belong to a aviation socitey(like LAAS and Air Britian) that is in the scheme. This is in order that details can be checked. So the cost of £15 can oftern really be £50+ when membership is taken into account.
Although I think the scheme is well meaning I think its unworkable. For instance are we going to have spot checks at viewing areas and those without cards being removed. I would guess in the summer there are oftern more non spotters in viewing areas than spotters? It also has no real benifit as you wont get to do anything you cant do now. Lets face it if we saw somebody acting a bit dodgy we would report them card or no card. Personally I have never been asked for any id and I go the LHR once or twice a week.
There are better views if you turn left out of the gliding club and take the next left by the house before the main road. It takes you to the security barriers and gives some good views. The other area is in the village turn right at the church and go past the pub. Again this takes you to the security gate. Sadly the old times of driving across the taxiway ended when a delivery lorry using the field as a short cut hit a 727 wing!
Nice pics as usual Flood. In answer to your question I have always understood the regulations to be that they are exempt from the registration requirements as long as they are foot launched. If I’m wrong I have no doubt there is someone out there who will soon put things straight for us
You are correct although three(prop powered) were registered a few years ago for a flight to France. The jet ones are dam noisey and top speed looks about 30kt above the stall! Something to buy to upset the neighbours! I wonder what sort of licence you need for them as I think you can hanglide with out one?
The Harvard as a type is well represented in the U.K – maybe a little broader imagination could bring in types such as the Auster and Druine Turbulent which have been a part of British aviation for many years.
On the subject of Turbulent I hear that Turbi(the 2 seater) G-AOTK is now hangared at OW.
I was there too today amoungst the ‘triangles’, tomorrow’s more my cup of tea but a couple of nice Yak 18T’s today. Saw the Vampire go through to Abingdon, and a T-6.
1) Yes thats BNPV with dummy, must have a look at it tomorrow, forgot it now has the dummy!
2)The Tiger is G-BPHR I think is based on a private strip at Swindon, its a Popham regular.
Interesting to see some historics lined up in the visiting aircraft park at the back; Devon and Chipmunk. I wonder whether, for future Duxford displays, space could be found to park them on the flanks of the flightline for such aeroplanes, to distinguish them from the spamcans and allow the public to recognise their own historic value…? Just a thought.
I’ll second that. For me,as a spotter, the more interesting aircraft are always parked on the far side(as the show aircraft vary little year to year). Just think of those ex SAAF T-6’s, the Swiss PC3’s and P2 to name but a few. If only they could park the more interesting ones by HFL for instance.
Abingdon for me is all VC10;s, Vulcans,Indian Jaguars and Lightnings.
Would this weekend go but as a spotter many maore numbers at popham this weekend, weather, permitting, I hope.
Easyjet
Monday 07 June, flight 5101
departs London Gatwick (South Terminal) at 06:20, arrives Amsterdam at 08:30
Tuesday 08 June, flight 5108
departs Amsterdam at 18:20, arrives London Gatwick (South Terminal) at 18:35
Total amount: 34.98 GBP what a bargain. Two days of spotting on the deck, and and ‘interesting’ evening in the city!!!
Ill second the Horsa(or even better a Hamilcar!) and the Cierva.
There is a static replica Horsa being built at Shawbury, they have a Dak too. Don’t know what the BGA would think at such a big glider!
Wish Shuttleworths C30 would go the whole hog from taxing to flight. There is a Pitcarn model flying in the states.
I would love to see a mass paradrop at a airshow. Either 5 Daks(not difficult to find) or how about 10 C130’s? Why has this never been done at a show? Or has it been done abroad? Sure beets a Spit 😉 .
On another subject anybody see the South African flypast this week?
3 SAA 747’s in a formation break over Cape Town!

Much like the Hispano powered He-111s I guess. 🙂Not a bad site actually, the http://www.warbirdalley.com 🙂
Actually unlike the He111’s/JU52’s/Me109’s these were built in Germany I think around 1938/39 and were not licence built. They served until the early 70’s I think.
Nothing official yet but looks like plenty of US military hardware and lots of bizjets.
On the historic side Rolls-Royce are doing a 100th anniversay display which may be interesting?
Official delails will be released in early June.
Perhaps they will bring back the Merchantman and Argosy’s!
How about this taken at the last Farnborough show. It brought in ground equipment for Sukhoi. Hopefully another one this July!

PLF102 will the the Polish Airforce VIP Tu-154 serialed 102.
I saw it in a very dark and damp hangar at Krakow in 1992,very impressive. I think it has a strange history in that it was captured by the germans and put on show in the Berlin museum. When the museum was bombed, along with many others it was moved to Poland where it was captured once more! This time by the Russians. I think it was one of the first aircraft restored when the museum came into being.
Their store was an amazing place with a few of WW1 aircraft that I had never heard of and the record breaking ME109.
