Great photos I am off there in October for a weekend using some free BMI flights. Where did you take the runway shots from? I am heard about the McDonalds viewing area, near my hotel(ETAP) is this any good? The deck is only open 9-5 while I am over so hoping to use the McDonalds area a lot.
Like the Iran Air,something I am looking forward to, I have only seen one,bet they send the same one in when I am there!

As a regular spotter for 25 years its difficult to pick one out.
Personally the two Connies I saw flying commercially at Miami in 1990. Others the Hummingbird (Maldives) Cessna 208 Caravan floatplane at Shoreham in 2000. Gaoing back many years PK-BAZ CL44 at Lasham,CN-CCT Caravelle on my first trip to LHR in 1976 along with Pan Am and TWA 707’s,Gulf Air VC-10,KLM DC8’s…etc Other highlights are going to Berlin and Warsaw in 1990 with wall to wall IL18’s,Tu134’s etc. Going to Barbados and sitting on the hotel balcony while LIAT and Carib Star DHC8’s fly along the beach! Going to Boeings and Airbus factorys…
As for unuasuall biz jets a Venezulan Westwind,Gutemarlan Learjet and the Australian 125 that turned up here at Farnborough one day.
I still don’t know why I spot, think its the challenge? It gets me out of the house, espically when there is a airport at the bottom of the road.

I didn’t know about this one until today. The French will not back the lifting on sancations until they get the same settlemnt as the Lockerbie people. Still no Americans dies in the UTA crash so it did not make the headlines.
Aaahh UTA,excellent airline, nice scheme, and one of the shortest lived 747’s ever(burned out at CDG after a few weeks service I think?)

Beleive me its sometimes difficult to get a space on the yellows, plenty of spaces in the official carpark though! Another good trick is noting when the attendant goes to lunch, you get a free hour until he comes back.

The best place for about a year(1999-2000) was what is now the site of the Virgin hangar by the fire ‘aircraft’. It was clear ground and gave good views of the runway. It was only known by locals but was hassle free even though it was next to a security post, even had a burger van! Of course the Virgin hangar changed all that.

Personally I like the visitor centre at LHR. I mainly visit in the winter(too many airshows to go to in the summer) and almost gave up going after many freezing days on the old terrace. As a reg spotter it gives me what I want, somewhere I can sit in the car,or the warm inside and spot, somewhere with toilets and tea. As a spotter its fine, obviously as a photographer its not. Parking is also free if you park on the double yellows on the entrance road. Only been moved one once and that was shortly after 9-11.
Although of course BAA could have spent the money on a decient place in the central area like the little used top of car park 3, where I also used to freeze to death!

Also there is a far grater number of potential pax in London that in Dublin, simple.
Not been to DUB for about 12 years and it was a pretty quiet airport then. Had Ryanair BAC1-11’s, and HS748’s!Also EIN SD360’s and 747’s. There was not much in the way of foreign traffic then. Although we saw some interesting Aeroflot flights at Shannon.

Talking of Starships I know somebody who works for the UK Beech authorised manitiance provider and he said they were a night mare to maintain. He said half their parts store was full of Starship parts! I also remember the local paper having a photo of the Starsip flying as people had reported it as a UFO!
I think GA aircraft should deffinetly be preserved if they can not be maintained in flying condition. They have as much right to be preserved than a jet fighter that never flew operationaly. Civil rules!!:D

Gatwick is just as bad as LHR. You can see nothing departing 26 until it lifts off from the deck. You can see nothing on the left side of the central pier or on the ‘domestic’ peir. The carpark might give a better prospect but I have not used to for ages. The top was closed to cars, not sure about the attitude to pedistrians.
As for LHR the visitors centre is the best bet. It can be got to by bus,but I dont know which ones though. I am sure the info desk in the bus station would help? It has a cafe, toilets etc and has good views of 27R and T1 stands.

According to my long out of date russian transports book the 5th prototype 154 was preserved in a Moscow park, I think along with a early Yak 42. There were also some early IL 18’s, and TU134’s at tech schools.I know there are some preserved aircraft at one of the Moscow airports. Trouble is over there the weather is not exactly good for parking aircraft outside!
Aaah the ‘row in the 80’s LOT TU134’s, TAROM IL6s’s,Balkan 154’s, and Gatwick with still a few IL18’s.

Personally if the restoration involves not using at least 90% of what is in the complete airframe then no. I want to see a genuine airframe that was how it was when it was last flown, not something that was produced from a few orginal parts with the rest discarded. This is ok in the cas of the Hendon Halifax as it is complete, not sure how I feel about something that is largely incomplete.

So the fact that its a LA4 amphibian and can take off from water has escaped the good old press;) . BASO used to be based at Popham, I heard the owner had ditched a previous aircrft in the channel so decided on a seaplane just incase! The photo looks quite false, and the aircraft is probable 1/2 a mile out to see, but what does that matter!

    Can I pick 2?
The Supermarine Southampton, what a sight that would be with wings let alone flying!
And either the Cierva C30 or R4, we lack and old flying choppers in this country.

This is very good news. The greatest moment in my spotting ‘career’ was seeing Connies operating from Miami in 1990. One at the old while another landed. If only we in the UK could do something like this. But I guess its a combination off the CAA and ‘if its not WW2 its not worth it’. Would rather see a connie than a squadron of Spits:D .
