ScottC will do, I have to go down there again next week I will see if I can find out any info. I would guess it wont be long as I doubt the USAF want it sat around at Fairford long. I drive past the museum ever day anyway.
some intetesting ones there
3:is that Belfast Aldergrove or the old Airport at Nutts Corner?
7: must be East Midlands
11:Louis Pulham beating Claude Graham-White
13:2286m (ok I looked in a book!)
14: Whitchurch or Lulsgate, Lulsgate 1957,Whitchurch 1929
15:the local council?
It is supposed to come here to Farnborough, but has not so far arrived. Being allembled here now is the E28/39 replica displayed at Fairford. Its destined for a roundabout here around the 24th. Looks nice but I would have prefered it to be painted not just silver looking like a giant airfix kit.
heres some photos that I was sent by a friend who was a spotter in the early post war years
DH’s demo Beaver seen at Woodley in 1947

Hawker Hart G-ABMR now at Hendon seen at Langley in 1947

G-AGTL Lockheed 12 then used by Blackburns as a hack 1946-9 seen at White Waltham
Hawker Cygnet G-EBMB seen at White Waltham in 1948, now in the RAF museum
I have some more but have not uploded them onto my site yet.
Personally the highlights of the static were the ME108 and Framan from Germany, the Miles Hawk Speed Six(one of my home town aircraft), Javelin,P1127, Lightning T5, outside the 100 years of flight the Mil8, Mirage IVP,the civil German Learjet( I am a biz jet nut, this a big gap filler for me). I did not see much of the flying(left at 1:30) but the NZ 757 did a spectacular take off.
This was one of the best programes I have ever seen. Normally they just concentrate on the aces,Camels,Fokkers, Se5’s etc. But they has footage of Gothas,Handley Hage 0/500’s, Short 184’s and Felixstowe flying boats, truely amazing. Oh to see one of those Handley Pages today. Somebody did register a V/1500 replica in the G-BKxx series but it was cancelled after 10 years, don’t think they got very far.
Sadly I do not have the photo to hand by my dad has a great shot of the sadly no more BAe Mosqito doing a low flypast half hiddern by the beer tent at a 70’s IAT! Only half the aircraft being visable abouver the tent.
How about this from the pages of ‘The Aeroplane Spotter’ 28/6/45
The royal observer corps stand down airshow at North Weald 24/6/45
Flying were
4 squadrons of Mosquitos escorted by six squadrons of Mustang III and IV’s at 2000ft. Coming back in sections at 50ft!
Next a Meteor aerobatic display.
Then a Stirling para dropping.
A halifax towing a Hamilcar.
Then 3 Czech squadrons of Spitfires.
A Dak towing a Horsa.
Then 6 meteors in formation aerobatics.
The finale was a Sikorsky R4.
Static
Mosquoto BXVI,Lancaster III,Fortress III
Halifax III,Walrus Liberator GRIV,
Wellington GR XIV ,Beaufighter TF X,Dakota III,

I think thats a good start. For us spotters also a massive scrap yard like those that held 1000+ Halifaxes etc.
Plenty of more shows like that in the pages of the ‘spotter(I have 90% of the post war issues.).
Having heard of many rare types like this arrive in the uk it seems unlikely that these will ever been seen in public in the UK. Call me a sceptic but my guess is that they will go to the land of the $$$$.
Just like the Twin Mustang that was registered to a Jersey based company and all the other stuff from Russia. Sad but true.
Th Farnborough museum is open all weekends 10-4 at the moment, don’t know how long it will be for though. I visited the opening weekend and am due for another one when I get a weekend with no airshows.
Was supprised that the museum opening was not featured in this months Flypast. Good news is though that the Lightning T5 featured in the mag will be coming here at some point. Just a shame that they are not kept undercover in the nearby black shed.
This will confuse you all! I have been a spotter for about 25 years I love all aircraft, but mostly civil ones. BUT I actually hate flying! I am ok once I get in the air as long as there is no turblence and its straight and level. I have flown in everything from a 747 to An2,Mil 17, to a Tiger Moth!Yet I still don’t really like it. I am also really scared of heights:rolleyes: .
By the way had a lovely Sunday at my summer home of Popham. About 80 visitors Puss Moth,DH60 moth,Stearman, lots of vintage Cessnas, and visitors from Ireland,Holland,France and Sweden but no Icelandic CAP’s:( . Any Popham regulars on here?
The story about the LHR deck seems to be that due to new EU legislation all public buildings must have disabled access. The deck has 70 odd steps and no lift. Rather than spending money on us spotters they just decided to close it. Although there was talk of T5 having something, but don’t hold your breath.
I either use the visitors centre either in winter, or the area off the permiter road near Hatton Cross when the weather is nice and landings are on 27L. If you come up the A30 from T4 turn right by the tube station and immeadiate right again. This is Hatton Road with several right turns. The most used one is Cairns lane.
I was lucky enough to live not far from Blackbushe in its modern heyday of the late 70’s. Although I never met him personally Arnold was not well liked by anybody I met at the time or since. I do remember getting chased away from the hangars by guard dogs while trying to get a peak at the Liberator(took me 10+ years and a trip to Florida to manage it!). There was always talk of a museum but that seemed a smoke screen for what was a wheeler dealer in aircraft. But if it was not for him I would have never seen a Hienkel(Ok it was CASA built) in the air. Visits always turned up a new DC3 of ‘Junkers’. Sometimes the hangars would be open enough for a peak at his Avenger,P47, of Spits. Those hangars did not have planning permission and were knocked down shortly after he left.
I did wonder if it was one of ‘Arnolds'(family) trades(aaahh Blackbushe in the 70’s) .Where did it come from was its a genuine Storch of a Argus engined MS500??
Christ that took a long time to read through(dam PC breaking down this week)
On Concorde the prototype is enough. Its the Imperial WAR museum. No matter how much I like to see civil aircraft preserved its not within the museums remit. To recieve another Concorde seems like a short tearm public popularity measure to boost attendances. The prototype is enough. It is well looked after and if you painted it in a BA scheme and fitted it out with pax seats joe public would know no diffrence. I would rather see a Concorde preserved at Cosford( even shorter runway!) and at Heathrow than Duxford.
As for the Shack… this is one of the few nosewheel Shacks, in fact Shaks at all preserved, and I think its one of only two undercover(the AEW in Manchester being the other). It is an important type having served for about 30 years on some of the RAF’s longest flights. Yes its unglamorours to the public compared with a Spit. But if that was the case lets scrap everything that never fired a shot in anger.
It seems with the scraping of the Comet and the Convair Duxford seems to have a policy to scrap anything left outside. That Comet, no matter how coroded, was far more hostircial tha the Dandair one now there. Lets hope the Victor gets some well deserved attention in the near future.
