Talking of flying A does anybody have any info on a Storch N436FS?? that I saw in their hangar about 4 years ago? If was in full Luftwaffre scheme as ZE+RA with a small US reg under the tail. I saw it one day after getting lost going to the market! It was next to the Corsair and Wildcat, the only time I have seen that hangar(very slightly) open.

Aaaah St. Maarten, next years holiday desternation for me having got bored with Barbados(wost airport terminal award). The beach is narrow and is at the far end on the photo. The hotel at that end has many rooms overlooking the threshold. 😀 . There is nothing like laying on a caribbean beach and being able to smell jet A1.

The only Belgian DC-8’s were operated in 1972-4 by BIAS(Belgian International Air Services) on charter work. They were OO-AMI,CMB,TCP .

Has to be the Vulan for me, one of the few aircraft I would stay to the end of a flying display to see.
Coming in second etc the F-100(remember the Danish AF ones?),Hunter( what a beautiful aircraft),and the Lightning(sheer noise). The Starfighter gets a Mention in despatches.
Also as a civil orientated person the BAC 1-11:D ,pardon, speak up!

As another spotter type I managed to get there for the gates opening at 07:30 walked the static line up twice, with 75% of that time doing the 100 years of flight exhibition twice. I departed the field at 14:00 having seen one fast jet fly you have seen them all.
I am still sulking from the fact that altough I got a cheap ticket via my other half who works for BAe(they used to make aircraft you know!) I missed out on the staff hospltality( granstand, free lunch, programe etc) for the same price. Nearly resulting in divorce proceedings as she was too late in registering for this offer!
The argument used to be that the admission was set at a price compatable to a day at a theme park. Now it has reaced the £30 barrier any pricer and it will cease to follow that trend. I choked when I saw the public grandstand was £18, that is a rip off. Is the photo bus the most expensive bus ride in the world?
I too think Concordes absence was a big blunder.

We seem to be there allready in the case of some of the Spits built from ground up. Things like the Me262 are fine as you would not want to risk flying an original. I think it will be many years before we see a Stirling replica in the sky! What the airshow scene will be like in 30 years is anybodys guess. Will the WW2 mania for things of that era have subsided?
If I had a personal choice of what shapes I would like to be back in the air would be..
    Handley Page V/1500
    Cierva C30 autogyro
Avro Tudor(as long as they don’t reporduce its defects!)

I first went to IAT at Greenham in 1978. Although I was only 8 at greatly impressed me and I eagily awated the next one. Of course in those days it was every two years and it was the only time you saw aircraft from outside NATO at a airshow. Over the years with the moves to fairford,Boscombe Down etc the magic has slowley dissapated. Aircraft like the Vulcan,Lightning etc disseapeared and safty rules got tougher. The flying display consisted of the same types of aircraft doing the same thing. They were either A: display teams,B: fast jets or C:helicopters of trainers lost in a two mile crowd line. So I began leaving the show earlier and earlier because the flying was boring. The static just turned into a line up of F16’s, Tornados etc all looking pretty much the same. So after about 1995 I stoped going and just went to the Monday departures. This suited me better as a spotter just getting the numbers in the book. I didn’t bother with Cottersmoore and didn’t bother last year with Farnborough being on my door step at the same time.
However this year I returned coutysey of a cheap ticket. The 100 years of flight exhibition was the best show I have ever been to. The aircraft were exciting, the layout well thought out and I felt like I did all those years ago at Greenham. If next year returns to rown of F16’s etc I will stay at home.
I would like to see the show go back to basics. Firstly go biannual again, or perhaps have a IAT orginased smaller show in the north/Scotland every 2nd year. Get rid of the corporate image and tents. Go for quality and not quanity, say no more than 5 of the same type in static. Some new themes are needed, how about trainers or VIP and communications aircraft(French AF Jodels and Spanish AF Barons please).Cost is another problem. I can’t remember how much the Greenham shows were but we were able to afford to go both days as we were not a well off family. Is the show now simply a money making exercise??
And in general more of a wider based show like this year with a corner of the static always for historic aircraft. We should be able to have the best of both worlds on a massive site like Fairford.
    Rant over:rolleyes: .

I am not one that watches many displays(once the numbers are in the book its time to move on elsewhere) but..
The Connie when it was at the PFA rally at Cranfield. Following its display it taxied in (there are no crowd barriers at the PFA) and it rolled to a stop just a few feet away from me and the ground was shaking and the noise wonderfull.
Living at farnborough you get to see the practice week displays, frightening!
The Su-32 doing a tail slide at 1000ft over Farnborough town centre during one of its practice sessions.
Also at Farnborough 2000 the US Navy F18 going out for a test flight was cleared to climb straight ahead to 18000ft on departure and went straight up and reported level at 18000ft about a mile off the end of the runway.
last show the the F-15 arrived landing on 06 and rolled a very long way down and with about 150m left realised it wouldn’t stop and piled on the power missing the Swan pub by feet!

The NZ 757 did a truely amazing climbout, reaching about 8000 in 2 minutes, pretty naff lov viz scheme though. The A330 was nice flying with the Tornados, its destined for EVAair. A few airliner charters apart from the BA ‘lump, KLM Fokker 50, Eastern Airways BAE41, Dutch Dak, and a few biz.

According to the civil bible(AJ Jacksons ‘British civil aircraft since 1919, 1959 edition).
    Their civil historys were
730hp Panther engine, redesign of Armsrtong Whitworth AW16 with lower front decking, two civil aircraft only
    G-ACCD C/N AW.828 CofA issued 28/6/33 scraped 1936
G-ADBL c/n AW460 CofA issued 7/12/31 dismantled and ‘preserved’ at Whitley, broken up in RJ Coleys yard Hounslow 10/58
    span 33ft,length 25ft,max speedd 217mph,cruise 185mph

Shame it was bot really preserved. Although you never know like the Gloster Gamecock G-ADIN somebody might find the manufacturers plate and rebuild one!

I went to RIAT today for the first time in 8 years and was very impressed. Left Farnborough at 5am in the carpark by 6:45 after very few delays. main delay was that the gates didn’t open until 7:30 and the security check, but was inside be 8am!
The 100 years of flight exhibition is fantastic. Don’t think I have been so excited at a show for years. Meteors in a line, DC2(where have they been hiding that all these years), finally the Spitfire prototype flyable replica,Javelin,Scimitar,Sea Hawk Bradshaws Fury outside(bet they even roaded it from Kemble!!),lots of Gnats,Jp’s,Lightning, a bit lacking in Hunters though. Some good civil types, including 6 Miles aircraft.Brillant.
    Some nice ‘modern stuff’,Mil 8,Piaggio 166,Mirage IVP.
Back to giving it a miss next year have a small airshow at the end of my road this time next year!
