Here’s another female who regularly visits this site, I can assure you guys that aviation is not a bloke thing (ever heard of Amy Johnson? Pauline Gower, Sheila Scott, Jean Batten to name a few?)

Greekdude – the Air New Zealand flight I’m referring to took place in September 1995. At that time the airline allowed smoking on flights to and from Japan. The aircraft I was flying on had just landed from Tokyo and no attempt had been made to clean it. I had my last flight with Air New Zealand in 1998 so I cannot comment on what their fleet is like now.
IKBrunel – I agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. I have just visited the website of Amnesty International and they are indeed whining on about how concerned they are for the vermin held in Cuba.
They also seem more concerned by treatment of Iraqi POWs by the coalition than by how the Iraqis are treating American POWs, but then that’s just typical of them.
To all those who think that the UK is a civilised society because of how we treat criminals. Are these the hallmarks of “civilised”: Old people scared to leave their homes for fear of being mugged. Old people scared in their own homes because yobs are allowed to run riot without any fear of punishment from our “justice” system. Teachers attacked in the classrooms because school discipline is a thing of the past. Criminals given early release from jail only to reoffend. People who do have the guts to defend themselves against criminals having to pay compensation because some burglar gets hurt. Police protecting paedophiles. The thing that killed Sarah payne was a known paedophile who had been released early from jail. If that bloody thing had served a half decent sentence then Sarah Payne would be alive today. I could go on and on here.

I agree with this little snippet from Tempest – I can think of one organisation and its members who should be transported to Guantanamo Bay, they are so fond of the bloody vermin holed up there that they should be incarcerated with them. Who am I talking about? Amnesty International of course!!

Air New Zealand – Disgusting
I once spent eight hours on an Air New Zealand Boeing 767, sharing my seat with around 300 cigarette ends and the cover from the seat in front draped over my feet. Air France has nothing on Air New Zealand, believe me!!!
I remember in the newspapers the day after the crash it said that the aircraft involved had a history of engine problems and that very morning its take off had been delayed while emergency work was carried out on an engine. One of the engines dropped off onto a garage, I don’t know if it was the same one which had been troublesome but it must have destabilised the aircraft immensely and probably contributed to the eventual crash.
Thanks Simmer and Mixtec – I’l need to upgrade the memory on my PC before I do anything – it had 256MB when I got it, but with all the stuff I added it is now down to about 75MB. It has a Pentium 4 processor and Windows XP, it’s a good spec one I think.
I’d seen some video cards in our local PC World and baulked at the prices when I first saw them, but I needed to ask on the forum what was the best one, I always think if you ask in one of these chain shops you might be advised to buy something just to get the assistant some commission or something, their advice isn’t always independent.
I’m building my system bit by bit, the scanner was only added a couple of weeks back, but I’m getting there and the memory expansion and video card will be next.

John Cunningham – 27th July 1949 – the maiden flight of the DH106 Comet prototype. I bet it was superb to be in control of what was then a world beating machine. Like IKBrunel I would take back the knowledge of what went wrong with the type so that De havilland could be properly forewarned and avert the disasters which sadly affected the type when it was in service.
The prototype Comets were flown extensively but never suffered the same problems as the BOAC Comets, so why did the airline models develop such severe problems? I would have thought the prototypes were flown in a pressurised condition to mimic the conditions in airline service, and they had the square windows and ADF cutouts which caused the problem on the airline Comets.
IKBrunel!!! Thanks for your comments on my photo.
Good to see there are more Brunel fans on this board (you got my vote in “Great Britons” – pity you didn’t win hahaha!!)
A beautiful photo – the Lockheed TriStar is one of my favourite aircraft.
