    RE: Cheeta pictures

With my northern accent I would say “Tan-ZAN-ee-AR”). “Ken-ya”.
Love the pics by the way Geforce. When I get my scanner and stuff I’ll post my holiday pics (some of them at least) of rain-soaked Brugge, cloudy Oostende, cloudy Antwerp and cloudy Brussels (tell me I’m mad but there is nowhere else like it – where else do they dress a fountain every day in any one of 650 costumes? It’s worth a trip to Brussels just to see what the Manneken is wearing.)

    RE: JAL best by far

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-05-02 AT 11:44 AM (GMT)]JAL do sound very efficient, typically Japanese. If I’d have been on such a killer stretch I would probably have gone mad as my last long haul flight was horrid to say the least. My only word of advice to anyone reading this is never ever fly economy with Air New Zealand. After taking off in lovely afternoon sunshine for a 10 1/2 hour flight to LAX, I decided to relax and look through the window. About half an hour into the flight the senior steward announced that all window blinds had to be closed because they were about to show the film. I didn’t want to watch the film and I had nothing to read, so I was just sat for hours with nothing to look at. When I did dare to open the blind a little the stewardess raced down the aisle, leaned across two passengers in the row and slammed the blind shut. Her attitude stunk to say the least. The only saving grace on that flight was the chance to go up and see the flightdeck. That was when I realised what I had been missing as we were flying over mountains (Greenland or Canada, I don’t remember which) and the sun was gorgeous, I only wish I had taken a photo of the view from the flightdeck window because it was one of the best inflight views ever.
Long haul flights in the night are not too bad if you get an exit seat with the extra legroom.

If you think Oranjeboom is disgusting Arthur, have you ever tried Orval??? That doesn’t even taste like beer. It tastes like either of these two things – recycled stomach contents or the oral polio vaccine I had when I was 15 (without the customary sugar lump).

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-05-02 AT 09:40 AM (GMT)]Thanks alot Geforce!!!:-) I knew that would happen one day. I got one or two words of that but I admit not the whole of it. I have written it down to translate later!!
    Here is some Yorkshire dialect.
“Can ta talk Tyke?” (always works when people pester).
“Put t’wood in t’oil”. (close the door).
    “Coil oil” (coal shed).
Many Belgians I’ve come across think I’m German because my English accent sounds so unusual to them!!!

    RE: Belgian Ardennes

Thanks for the offer of help Frank. My trip is in September, but I like to plan my Belgian holidays well in advance and spend quite alot of time looking at maps and brochures and things.
I read the other day that three of Belgium’s most famous breweries are in the Ardennes region (Chimay, Rochefort and Orval), but if you’re not into beer then sorry to go on about it.

    RE: Non-Aviation Photography?

Photography is one of my hobbies. I have a Pentax 35mm camera, a Minolta APS which I don’t like as much as 35mm, and a Lubitel TLR which I use for black and white photography.
I also shoot alot of video footage on 8mm and like to edit them and add music.
As soon as I get a scanner I’ll post some pictures.

Thanks Frank. I know for sure that I can easily get the train to Liege, without changing, from Brugge (it goes via Brussels and I’ve used the service before and that was on a Sunday). I thought only the UK had such poor bus services (round here they stop at around 6pm).

English is my native language. I learned French at school but have lost it now, apart from being able to ask for a rum-soaked desert (“Je voudrais un baba au rhum”).
I have learned some German. I studied Spanish at school. I am learning Dutch.

Air New Zealand used to have them but they had to stop using them as passengers got scared because they caught a glimpse of another plane once. (Unusual for Air New Zealand to listen to the concerns of their passengers, usually the passengers can go to hell as far as they are concerned!!!) I like the idea of the cameras though.

Frank, I have no choice about the train as I can’t drive!!!
It really is a shame if the rail network in that part of Belgium is not so good as I would like to see more of the country than just Brussels, Brugge, Gent, Antwerp, Oostende, Kortrijk and Oudenaarde.

RE: Train crash kills 6 in UK

A terrible tragedy. It may seem a stupid suggestion, but I think more trains could be run on the network in a bid to avoid the gross overcrowding on some trains at certain times, and also that seatbelts could be fitted into trains. I read that the cause of the fatalities was being flung from the carriage. The carriage itself wasn’t badly damaged, and I think if seatbelts had been used then the passengers would not have been flung out onto the tracks like they were.
I think the problem was caused by a faulty point near the station.

Buy the computer I have always wanted (I’m getting one in a few months when we’ve redecorated the spare room).
Buy a plane and learn to fly it myself.
Employ someone to walk the dog when the weather is bad or I just don’t want to be getting up at 6:45 am.
Buy the Icelandic horse I’ve been wanting for more years than I care to remember (best horses in the world).
Buy my way into a vet school somewhere so I can do the only job I’ve ever wanted to do.
Buy a gorgeous house in Brugge or Antwerp.
Buy the Roman brewery in Oudenaarde.

    RE: Current Magazine

I am very happy with the magazine, I’ve bought it from issue 2, which was the first issue I saw as some of the shops in Scarborough are a little inconsistent with their magazines on offer.
It was high time that a magazine was published to cater for airline enthusiasts, as AFM is obviously military, and Flypast is mostly military-related. Airliner fans definitely used to be overlooked but not any more.
I think the magazine could include some sort of catalogue detailing all the videos, DVDs etc on offer, as I considered buying a Brussels Airport video and a Sabena route video and they are no longer advertised in the magazines (I cannot use the online shop as it does not support debit cards).
The features have the right balance between airlines/airliners/airports, and the news section is very good with some excellent supporting photography. More features on vintage airliners and defunct airlines would be most welcome in my opinion, as we recently saw the loss of Europe’s greatest (in my opinion) airline, which was also one of its oldest, before it had been featured in depth in the magazine.
The centre photos are, by the way, almost invariably excellent.
    Great stuff:-)

    My Choices

I too loved Duran Duran songs back in the 80s, though I much prefer the original line up to all the changes they made.
I also like Dire Straits and many others from the 1980s. Dragon, a New Zealand group, did some reasonable stuff (“April Sun in Cuba” brings back many memories for me).
I don’t like the current crop of “boy bands” because to be honest they look like bunches of jessies and they sing “jessy” songs. I never liked the Spice Girls either.
I like Madonna’s songs, “Live to Tell” was used on my holiday video from last September on video I shot In Oostende, and “American Pie” was used on in-flight Sabena footage and Brugge footage, so any song I use on a holiday video has to be a favourite for me. I can listen to “The Boxer” by Simon and Garfunkel over and over again, that has always been used with footage of Sabena, so that has many memories for me as well.

    Ha ha Rabie:-)
Dutchy – my thesis is about the Massachusetts region, the marine life and the whales in particular (though that didn’t please my tutor, who said I should concentrate on the fisheries, which are boring.) I have one more lecture to go, one exam, two essays, a website to design and a talk to give before I can finally say I’ve finished for good with marine biology and I can head off on holiday!!
