So does this mean the Su-27 indigenization is almost done? Only the engine left? Is the FWS-10A still having trouble??

I think it is better to wait for J-11A to be seen loaded with PL-12 first before we talk abt the engines…. 😀

Personally, and this is just my opinion, but I think that china should drop the plethora of types that they are working on at the moment, FC1, J8, J7,JH7 and Q5 and just stick with developing and deploying the J-10 and the indigenised version of the J-11, (the one with the WS10A engine and chinese radar) especially now the SD-10 seems to be nearly ready. At the same time they should carry on and speed up work on future combat aircraft, J12 or J13 or whatever.

    Thoughts?

FC-1 possess great potential as a export success why stop?(U think those countries like Zimbawe,Myanmar,Albania Bangladesh ……can afford Su-30MKK,F-16 Block 52 with maintenance and spares? They r not planning to fight US,Russia or UK anyway)

On the China Daily 21 June edition front page it was officially annouced that a new jet will enter full production next year. The jet name is “Mountain Eagle” produced by the Guizhou Aviation Industry Corp.

The article says that it can be used both as trainer and fighter, looking like the FC-1. In China it will be used to train new pilots on the third generation fighters which means SU-27, SU-30 and J-10.

    Anybody has heard from it??

‘Mountain Eagle’ ready to spread wings
    By Zhao Huanxin (China Daily)
    Updated: 2005-06-21 02:15

GUIYANG: Mass production of the country’s most advanced fighter-pilot training aircraft is expected to start next year, one of the country’s major military aircraft developers said yesterday.

The training plane was designed and developed based on nine years of research.Powered by a turbo fan engine and equipped with advanced electronics, the aircraft boasts excellent maneuver ability coupled with low operational and maintenance costs. Although envisioned as primarily a trainer, the plane can easily be turned into an armed figher plane. [newsphoto/file]

Tests on the “Mountain Eagle”, China’s new home-designed and developed trainer plane, are going so well that the Guizhou Aviation Industry Group is producing parts and components to prepare for mass production, according to company Vice-President Zhang Shangdao.

A subsidiary of the Beijing-based China Aviation Industry Corp I (AVIC I), the Guizhou group, in Southwest China, has manufactured more than 1,100 military aircraft of different types since it was founded in 1964.

“We have begun making parts and components for the Mountain Eagle,” Zhang told China Daily in an exclusive interview.

“Our goal is to see to it that a number of the new trainers go to the military in 2006.”

As well as being used for training at home, the new aircraft is also aimed at the foreign market, Zhang said.

Enough parts and components will be produced this year to assemble up to 10 planes, he added.

However, that does not necessarily mean 10 trainers will be built as some parts or components will be scrapped in the course of further design improvement.

The Mountain Eagle, or Shanying in Chinese, has been in the public eye since its successful test debut on December 13, 2003.

“The sophisticated trainer satisfies the country’s need to train pilots for third-generation fighter aircraft, while at the same time serving as a basic trainer,” Zhang said.

Asked how the new plane would contribute to the country’s national defence, Zhang said the trainer jet was designed to improve training performance and speed up the fighter-pilot training process.

The plane’s performance and cost-effectiveness will also give the Mountain Eagle an edge in the international market, he said, even though it is not the most advanced trainer in the world.

Since it is both a fighter and trainer, some small countries, lacking a large fleet of fighter planes, could use the Mountain Eagle to train their fighter pilots in peace time, arming it for use as a fighter in wartime, Zhang said.

Over the past 18 months, the Guizhou company and a flight testing and experimenting institute in Xi’an in Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province have been testing the new plane, fine tuning it to meet needs of potential buyers at home and abroad.

By last week, two pre-production Mountain Eagle’s models had each made more than 300 takeoffs and landings, recording at least 200 hours flying time, Zhang said.

Results show the Mountain Eagle has met all test criteria, and the company may be able to confirm the plane’s final design specifications by the end of the year before proceeding to mass production next year.

Zhang did not say exactly how many planes will be needed domestically. As yet the company has received no orders from overseas.

I think there r a number of mistakes in the Taipei Times report, for example: “Weng said China probably would deploy the Ju Lang-2, which carries nuclear warheads, on its Han-class nuclear submarines”, Han Class is Type 091 an aged SSN.

Here’s another more moderate report from Japan source:

    China test-fires new submarine-launched missile

    http://www.timesleader.com/mld/timesleader/news/world/11923372.htm

    The Yomiuri Shimbun

TOKYO – (KRT) – China test-fired a new long-range, submarine-launched ballistic missile Thursday, Japanese government sources said Friday.

The new missile is believed to be the Ju Lang-2, a modified version of the intercontinental ballistic missile Dong Feng-31 that has a range of about 8,000 kilometers.

The new SLBM was believed to be fired from a nuclear submarine in waters off Qingdao and touched down in a desert in China several thousand kilometers away.

It has been confirmed that China test-fired an SLBM in 2001.

China is believed to possess about 30 ICBMs and has been conducting research on multiple-warhead missiles to counter the U.S. missile defense system.

China also has been more active recently in its naval operations. In November, a Han-class nuclear submarine cruised around Guam and entered Japan’s territorial waters. If China develops SLBMs further, the entire mainland of the United States would come within range of the missiles.

Observers said the latest test-firing apparently was aimed at warning Washington not to interfere in the event of military conflict between China and Taiwan in the Taiwan Strait.

The United States believes China is ready to deploy the Dong Feng-31 and has estimated that Beijing will have 100 warheads targeting the United States by 2015.

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld expressed strong concern over China’s development of ICBMs in a speech in Singapore on June 4, saying China appeared to be improving its missiles targeting the Asia-Pacific region and also was expanding its missile capability to reach any target in the world.

] Gun is at the bottom of the intake.

Oh. That’s its cannon. Expected an internal gun, like on the F-16 and Typhoon, and thought that was another pitot tube or probe.

It is an internal gun,a 23mm one.
