And the Mirage 2000 production line when it was offered . . .
But had the first of class of the IAC built in Italy with Indians observing & learning, while India prepared to build the second of class.

Let’s add –
India should have selected the RR offer to re-engine Jaguar, & actually had the project underway by now.I think there will be examples from Malaysia along soon.
the RAF should’ve retained its Jaguars and the RN its Sea Harriers, both of which were retired with undue haste when the airframes had plenty more to offer..India is showing that the Jaguar airframe has plenty to offer with upgrades and the SHar with the LUSH upgrade offers a more potent fleet defense option than the Harrier GR7A and GR9s.
and the RN should’ve retained its Nimrod instead of being in a situation where it has no maritime recon capability left.
Guys, AeroIndia-’15 is just around the corner. You’ll get all the status updates you want on the various upgrade programs as well as LCA MkI, MkII, AMCA and FGFA (if there has been any update at all).
IN interested in acquiring MQ-4C Triton for ocean surveillance
The Indian Navy has earlier shown interest in acquiring six to eight of the maritime variants of the US high altitude, long endurance (HALE) Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for extended ocean surveillance. The drones have been upgraded as the MQ-4C Triton maritime surveillance platform for the U.S. Navy, providing real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance over vast ocean and coastal regions.

There’s another reason the Viggen didn’t sell, and it had to do with Swedish policies. For many years, Sweden considered itself a totally neutral country. The policy was that because the home market was thought to be big enough, they wouldn’t sell to countries engaged in armed conflict or likely to engage in armed conflict. In other words, “We’ll sell you a warplane as long as we feel it’s unlikely you’ll ever use it as a warplane”. Therefore, most of the potential export market was already off limits and Saab didn’t even market to them, and fact didn’t really know how. With the advent of Gripen, though, Sweden realized its policies had to change if it wanted to be able to afford its own, independent and consistently excellent designs, it had to go out on the world stage. So, they started learning and you see a marked change on how they present themselves. They’re also learning not to spend a ton of money on “competitions” where essentially the winner is pre-selected.
Well, the Viggen was a frontrunner for the Indian Air Force in competition with the Jaguar and Mirage F1. But the US’ refusal to allow the Viggen to be sold to India thanks to the engine and other US components and avionics meant that it dropped out. And if any nation was/is likely to use imported weapons in conflict, India would be high up on the list.
Not so much the bad shape of the boat- it was never completed, but has been in a covered part of the shipyard in a high level of completion as far as hull goes. The hull is a great “lease”, though it will take some time to get it running. It’s not like it has been rotting away somewhere.
Amur on the other hand….does not pump out nuclear boats like it did in Soviet times.
so theoretically it could be completed using Indian funds and put into service within say 4-5 years of a contract signature then? Interestingly enough, the IN is going for its own SSN apart from the Akula class INS Chakra. No idea whether it will be a derivative of the INS Arihant or a new hull design with commonality of other systems to keep design costs low and reduce development time.
Speaking of which, here is a grainy shot of the INS Arihant going out of the harbor for sea trials
Soon is a relative word if they are indeed looking @ Irbis.
Hope the deal goes through. Amur has atrophied significantly though.
How bad of a shape is Irbis in?
INS Kolkata to fire long range LR-SAM missile in 2015
Stealth destroyer INS Kolkata, the largest warship built in India, will fire a long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) for the first time in 2015.
âThe vertical launch units of the LR-SAM, also called Barak 8, have been built into the vessel and the MF-STAR [multifunction surveillance and threat alert radar] is in place for missile guidance. All you need to do is take delivery of the missile, load it and fire. It is slated to take place next year,â Captain Tarun Sobti, Commanding Officer of INS Kolkata, told The Hindu during an exclusive tour of the ship.
The ship, commissioned in August in Mumbai, has just finished its maiden work-up here, during which the vessel and its crew were put through their paces by the Flag Officer Sea Training. The ship will carry 32 SAMs, with an enhanced range of up to 70 km, for missile defence.
An operational firing of the vertical BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, against surface targets, would be carried out early next year, Capt. Sobti said. The vessel fired BrahMos during the sea-acceptance trials off Karwar in June.

And it appears that India will lease another Akula class SSN from Russia.
India to lease a second nuclear submarine from Russia
The Indian Navy will soon have another nuclear submarine. The government has decided to lease a second nuclear submarine from Russia, top Defence Ministry officials have told NDTV.

India is looking at the hull of the Iribis – a Russian Akula class submarine – that was never completed after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s...
Saab gets funds for Czech Gripen upgrade
Saab has received a contract worth around SKr576 million ($76 million) from Swedenâs Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the support and upgrade of 14 Gripen C/Ds operated by the Czech air force.
âThe new agreement includes hardware modification of the aircraft and upgrade of system functionality that will deliver a continuing increase in capabilities,â says Saab. âWork to develop and adapt new mission software for Czech requirements begins immediately,â it adds, while âaircraft modifications will be implemented in about one yearâs timeâ.
