F-18, Rafale or Gripen: Indian Navy Looks for Its Next Fighter Jet

The paper Sea Gripen has no chances whatsoever. the RFI was for twin engined fighters, so where does the Gripen even fit into the scheme? The author himself states

It wants a twin-engine fighter with a stronger airframe and landing gear to operate from a flight deck with high-tempo flying cycles.

And then goes on to talk about the Sea Gripen or Gripen Maritime.

IN to retire its Tu-142M ‘Albatross’ fleet..:(

After Viraat, Navy to bid adieu to Albatross patrol aircraft

NEW DELHI: Another iconic naval platform is now set for retirement after aircraft carrier INS Viraat. The Soviet-origin Tupolev-142M aircraft, which helped the force keep a hawk-eye on enemy warships and submarines in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) for almost 30 years, will be decommissioned later this month.

The world’s largest and fastest turboprop aircraft, aptly named the ‘Albatross,’ the Navy had inducted eight TU-142Ms since 1988. “They were the backbone of our long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) and anti-submarine warfare operations. But only three are fully operational now. They will now be retired at the naval air station INS Rajali in Arakkonam in Tamil Nadu at a ceremony on March 29,” said an officer.

    Erieye’s Swedish, though.

China makes AEW radars. India has one under development. Japan has airborne air-air radars, including a 360° multi-panel radar. It’s x-band, though.

India has Russian aircraft with Israeli AEW radar, & is working on fitting both an Israeli & its own (under development) radar to Brazilian aircraft.

slight correction- the IAF inducted the indigenous ‘Netra’ with an AESA radar mounted on the modified EMB-145. They are proposing a rotodome mounted version for the AWACS-India project, with a larger platform to be chosen, not a Brazilian Embraer one though, which would be small for their requirements. They also ordered additional A50EI Phalcons which will be on Russian Il-76s, not Brazilian Embraers.

Why assume that availability is the limiting factor for PAF’s JF-17s? Also, I’m pretty sure those 65 airframes didn’t all turn up at the same time.

They didn’t obviously, but that brings another question- if you first consider the supposed rates of production (16 per year), and then work out 16 being delivered per year from 2012, it still adds up to 80 jets. I haven’t even considered those delivered in 2010 and 2011. 70 airframes by end of 2016 when deliveries started in 2010 indicates that they’re not assembling 16 per year.

Hungary doesnt have any other choice. PAF can afford to use different platforms as needed.
Without info on availability rates its mere speculation.

So is there information on availability rates of the JF-17 in the PAF?

Hungary Extends Gripen Lease with Aircraft Upgrade.

    FMV Update Hungary Agreement

    from the article

FMV today signed on behalf of the Swedish government an Additional Agreement to the lease agreement with Hungary for 14 Gripen C / D combat aircraft. It gives Hungary more flight time and updated aircraft.

The new agreement is a comprehensive solution that, among other things, gives Hungary 400 extra flight hours per year, increasing from 1600 to 2000 hours, with FMV contributing support to cope with the extended flight time. …

Since the beginning in 2006, Hungary has flown over 14,000 flight hours on the Gripen

14000 flight hours in 10 years. That’s 1400 flight hours per year. For 14 Gripens, gives an average of 100 flight hours per year for each Gripen.

Compared to the PAF’s JF-17 fleet which reached 19,000 flight hours with 65 active service JF-17s in April 2016

Seems like the JF-17’s availability is nowhere near that of the Gripen.
