like i already said: its the timing, gripen E & F-35 is introduced the day before GaN AESA takes over,
but india is a year after and gets the timing right

    Not really.

Tejas Mk1A is supposed to enter service around the same timeframe as the Gripen E will. they really do not have the cushion of time to be able to take an in-development radar based on GaN technology and wait till it is developed. All it will do is delay the Mk1A program and that is the last thing that the GoI, MoD, IAF or HAL/ADA want. Cost is another factor that needs to be kept in mind. We do not know what the financial terms of the offer that was made by Saab are, or how cost-effective it was considered to be.

All in all, a GaAs based Elta 2052 AESA radar will allow for quicker integration, testing and release to service- and the jump in capabiilty and overall reliability over the Elta 2032/MMR hybrid will have been worth the additional cost it will add to the Tejas program and unit price.

at this stage, its just dumb to buy GaAs AESA when the option is right there for GaN,
or you will have to pay twice when you upgrade it 2030.
as for cost, SAAB has a record of giving a fixed price tag, unlike others.

So Sweden and Brazil are dumb? After all the Selex Raven ES-05A radar uses GaAs T/R modules and not GaN..will mean they’ll need to pay twice for upgrading it in the 2030s or 40s, won’t it?

Final Brahmos integration tests on Su-30 fighter to begin on August 24

    JODHPUR, India —

Drop trials for the formidable supersonic cruise missile system BrahMos from Su-30 MKI aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are slated from August 24-26 at the Pokhran firing range in Jaisalmer. These drop trials will pave way for the real fire of BrahMos from the Russian made Su-30 by November last week or December first week. In fact, drop trials shall be conducted against land target and a sea target by the month end.

Dr Sudhir Kumar Mishra CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace while speaking to TOI said that the drop trials for the air version of BrahMos would be carried with a Mass Dimensional Dummy missile which means that it will be similar to the real missile in terms of weight etc, but would not have any engine and explosives.

“Under rare circumstances due to factors like range requirement or weather, the land trials may also be conducted at Integrated Test Range at Chandipur off the Odisha coast,” said the BrahMos chief adding that these drop trials will check the release mechanism of the launcher in addition to assessing the clearance from the aircraft after the fire.
    ..

“And with that happening, the BrahMos air version programme would further inch closer towards actual test firing when a 2.5-ton BrahMos air-toground missile will be fired from the Sukhoi-30 in November or December,” said Dr Mishra.

Su-30MKI integration with Brahmos missile to be 99% complete by August

NEW DELHI — The work to integrate supersonic cruise missiles Brahmos with Su-30MKI fighter are at the final stage and will be completed 99 percent by the end of August, CEO of the Russian-Indian Brahmos Aerospace Company Sudhir Kumar Mishra told TASS.

“The decisive test will be held on August 26-27. If it succeeds the work to integrate Brahmos with the fighter will be practically completed. It is a very important and responsible stage. The discharge of the missile from Su-30MKI at the army test range Chandan in Rajasthan State in the northwest of India shall be precise and perfect,” he said.
    ..

He also said the first test flight of Su-30MKI with integrated Brahmos missile took place on June 25. Ten other successful flights followed and aircraft performed complicated menoeuvres at supersonic speed. “The next round of tests is planned for October. It will master transmission of adjustment commands from the fighter to the missile and back in order to ensure precise hit,” Mishra said.

The head of the joint venture explained the fighter will have to fire the missile two more times, and both Russian and Indian experts will be engaged. “In December 2016 Brahmos will be fired at a moving seaborne target and in early 2017 – at a ground target. After that all Indian requirements for aircraft missile supplies will be met. By the middle of 2017 we plan to equip with cruise missiles at least two squadrons of Indian Air Force with 40 Su-30MKI each,” he said.

This will be for the first time an Indian defense company will build PDDS systems for the Indian Navy. The service was previously sourcing the technology from Sonardyne in the United Kingdom.

What type of missile are they integrating for the fast boat requirement? I am sure its not the Exocet since it’s a bit over sized for that kind of target and have a limited ripple effect (2 carried in theory).

Germany increases readiness of its Tiger helicopters

Visiting Kampfhubschrauberregiment (Combat Helicopter Regiment) 36 in Fritzlar Aug. 9, Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said half the unit’s Tigers are now available for use. This compares to only a quarter of the helicopters reported to have been available in 2014. The regiment currently has 22 Tigers, increasing to 32 in 2018.

so 25% availability for the German Army Tigers in 2014 and it has now increased to 50% availability..
