Didn’t say they’ve done gun runs with the Rafales just that there appears to be an intention to do strafing runs.

As that one still has both GBU’s on, I suspect it’s pre-mission anyway.

    “intention” is too strong IMO.

“Both GBU” ? Standard loads are 4 or 6. Don’t see why they would limit à departing mission to only 2 bombs.
    Hence I suspect it’s post-mission.

With gun cover off on that Rafale it seems the Armee de’l Air is flying lower level gun runs, which opens them up to MANPADS.

Not necessarily. Gun cover off may simply mean “there is a reasonnable chance the gun could be used on that flight, let’s not take the risk to waste a cover when it’s simple to avoid it”.
It doesn’t mean the gun was actually fired in anger. Indeed, no smokes traces.

    Air operation over Mali

    War in Mali

Nitpicking: This first image is not from Mali, but from archives.
    1/ 3x Mirage F1 on the pic, but we know only 2 are deployed @ Bamako (detached form ‘Epervier’ forces usually in Chad) ;
2/ The second aircraft, with its green nose, is an F1-CT, not a -CR. The last -CT were decommissioned earlier this year.
3/ it’s an old pic. click.

Edit: and a C-130 for moving Compagnie Epervier instead of a C-160! That surprises me after all we’ve been told about the Transall being better-suited for the African environment.

Are you sure the fondamental characteristic deeming the C-160 better-suited was “African“?
FAF used both C-160s and C-130s for years, in Africa & elsewhere. 🙂

Usage of these unarmored helicopter platforms in roles like this just doesn’t seem like a good idea. Perhaps the Gazelle replacement will have at least light armoring on the crew area.

The Gazelle replacement is the Tiger. It’s more armored.

Tigers are expeted to be deployed very soon,

I could be wrong, but I bet that the C-17 of the RAF will be used for to bring the tigers in Mali

I would put my money on an An-124 first, but why not also a C-17 or two for help.

I wonder after having a chance to play with our C17 the French military will start getting eager for their own examples? The line is open and meeting orders or will A400M win out as the sole transport type in French service?

The need to use RAF C-17s doesn’t say much for the FAF strategic lift capability.

It’s very low at the moment. C-130s & C-160s are old and getting older and fewer each year, CASAs are tiny, C-135s have other missions and Airbii are few (and fit for troops, not for vehicles or other big things).
I’m sure the French military are already eager for a better airlift capability, and are thankful for UK help, here & now, as a stop-gap.
The A400M will provide the needed better airlift capability. Starting this year (at last!), the first deliveries will change a lot of the current situation.
Hence I don’t see the point for France to decide (now) to get a new type nor, to be honnest, the overall need for building a mixed fleet A400M+C-17.
Note: I’m sure RAF will know what to do about that (France seldom go to Mount Pleasant for example), and I’m sure each aircraft has its advantages. 🙂

    Hi,

People able to read french really should follow Mr Merchet’s piece of advice when he says, here, “Il faut lire la Vérité sur notre guerre en Libye de Jean-Christophe Notin. C’est l’ouvrage le plus complet et le plus détaillé sur l’engagement français contre Kadhafi.”

Very detailed & documented book. I had the chance to hear some of the high ranking officers from all 3 french arms speak about Libya a few months ago in a “private” conference: this book confirms all I heard then, and even go further in details sometimes.

The book is (very) far from being “only” about Rafale, of course, but some of the hot debates who took place here in 2011 and later could find an answer in there.
For example: No the Rafale didn’t participate in the ISR campaign before march 19th. But yes, it has been considered at some time (don’t hold your breath, there is no analysis on SPECTRA’s precise capabilities ; OTOH, you’ll learn quite a bit about libyan’s ORBAT before intervention).
Another? The reader will learn exactly why 7 SCALPs (and not 8) were fired to Al Jufra AB.

    Back to reading;
    Cheers,
    AZ

    Mildave, re: your #72

10 : le nombre de Rafale livrés à l’Armée de l’Air et à la Marine françaises.

    Really? 10 delivered? Damn. :diablo:

It seems a lot of people are trying to “make” news (without too much attention to getting the facts right) at a time where the “exclusive negotiations” don’t allow official progress announcements. 😉

    Wow, good news 🙂

For the next people that want to ask for such a pass, please consider using the version below for your letter.
Indeed the version quoted above, while comprehensible by a French, contains grammatical / orthograph errors and uses the 2nd person of singular (which is very familiar in french, not to be used in such a letter;))

Good to know that the pilot is well.

    Indeed.

Could it be that just the M2X crashes thus far!?

No. Jacko had it wrong, it was the M18 off Pakistan 😉

    Obsolescence 4ème Tranche.

Where do the 2 “B” F1 came from? Are they pre-production?
AFAIK, only the “M” was ops under the F1 standart.

The fact that ASTRAC was used isn’t a proof that SPECTRA could not have perform similar function.

Of course not. But ASTAC is to be integrated on Mirage 2000D (the fact that it’s the M2000 and not the Rafale may indicate that SPECTRA is up to (part of?) the job, indeed).

The fact that the F1 is still in service isn’t a proof that Mirage 2000 and Rafale are less capable.

As said above, to keep ASTAC after the F1 retirement is, in my eyes, a proof that this pod has capabilities not (entirely) matched by integrated systems on more modern aircrafts.

    No more, no less 😉

However the fact that SPECTRA was able to penetrate inside denied airspace unopposed is a demonstration of its capability.

I concur. My point is the airspace was not so actively denied (based on the testimonies quoted above).

As far as I’m concerned, technology is science, not magic. And when technology work for the purpose it was created, then that’s called success.

    I fully agree 🙂

Thanks, Kovy. Interesting. And perfectly logical IMO 🙂

OK for recce with Reco-NG (pictures). I still don’t believe SPECTRA is that magic it may have been that useful for Elec OrBat assessment (if so, why bother to keep ASTAC?).
