They are still up there. They were due to be replaced about March by Shuttle. The last I head they are planning to change them by a Russian Soyus craft. But leaving only two in the next crew so that they will need less supplies also by sent up by an unmanned rocket. The ISS website is at:-

The prototype Sterling made its first flight from Rochester, then as now a grass airfield. After a successful take off and flight it was written off when the undercarriage collapsed on landing. The next prototype had a strengthened U/C! The tail assembly was massive. Twin wheels on a retractable arm. The Medway Aircraft Preservation Society based at the airport had one brought to them that had been trawled from up the seabed.
Have you seen these Stirling websites. These links are from one comemmorating the ‘MacRoberts Reply’ Sterling.

In particular check the ‘Stirling Bomber’ one.

First post for me after lurking for a few weeks!
After reading the original message I began to read Alec Lumsden’s ‘British Piston Aero Engines and their aircraft’
In a short article on starting methods there is a head on photo of a Hurricane with a crank handle sticking out of each side of the lower engine cowling. The caption says ‘The two handed starting handles of a Merlin II on a Hurricane I’ the article mentions that starting handles were often connected by an inertia system but dosn’t discribe the Merlin system! I believe that the Merlin II was only fitted to Spitfire Is.
