I agree. I have absolutely no respect for any artist who can’t write their own material. Covering a song or two is one thing, but having somebody else write all your music and lyrics and then just providing the voice is another.
Although it has to be asked who you do respect… Elvis maybe (care to name one song that he wrote that anyone could recognise)? Did Sinartra write all his songs? Elton John had Bernie Taupin, but did do a lot of his own lyrics and music for his albums. Kylie even!
We were spoilt in the 70s, 80s, and much of the 90s in Britain – our performers, for the most part, wrote and played their own music. The sad fact is that many of todays musicians can’t write lyrics, and the lyricists can’t write music – and the record companys won’t take chances anyway.
