    From the BBC

Restrictions have been placed on flights by vintage aircraft at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, following a spate of crashes.
Officials at the museum in Cambridgeshire have taken the steps after concerns were raised by nearby residents.

Flying displays will now take place further away from homes in Duxford village and from the M11 motorway which is at one end of the runway.

The announcement, which follows a safety review at the airfield, was made in the run up to the Centenary of Flight Air Show which begins on 6 September.

Duxford residents have been campaigning for changes to be made following three crashes in the past two months.

Aerobatic manoeuvres, unless specifically authorised, have been prohibited in areas near the village, which is south-east of the airfield.

Ted Inman, Duxford Airfield’s director, said the steps should reassure residents that safety issues are being taken very seriously.

“As a result of a number of recent incidents at Duxford and people’s understandable concerns over safety we have introduced measures which we believe will further reduce risks associated with the operation of a licensed airfield,” he said.

Two people lost their lives in the Fairey Firefly crash in July
He added the safety at the airfield has always been paramount and that the vintage planes have always been maintained to a very high standard.

“Old aircraft such as these are very intensively maintained possibly to a higher standard than modern commercial aircraft,” he said.

“We probably have the best concentration of knowledge in Europe as far as flying old aircraft is concerned.

“The measures we have announced will reduce the potential impact on our neighbours and we would seek to reassure people that we take these things very seriously.”

Duxford resident Jim Longstaff said: “It’s been a long time coming, but I am delighted and relieved that restrictions have been put in place to protect us.”

The safety review was carried out after two men were killed on 12 July when a vintage Fairey Firefly crashed during an air show.

Three weeks later a two-seater L39 Albatross came down in fields close to the museum. The pilot escaped without any injuries.

The last recorded crash was on 18 August when the world’s only flying Bristol Blenheim bomber crashed on landing at the airfield. The pilot and crew member escaped unhurt.

Just a thought, assuming that the display axis was in place for Legends and that the Firefly crashed in the same relative place on the axis, wouldnt that put her closer to the M11?????

I know its not a fair comparison because of the need to line up for finals, but still.

Oh and exacly how will the relocation of the Axis have an effect on either of the L-39 prangs and the Blenheim accident?.

Now if they were to move the eastern runway threshold (with a corresponding extension at the Western end of the runway) that may have made a difference.

I really dont want this debate about historic aircraft the stray into one of the rights and wrongs of intervention in Iraq. But I will say this.

As I see it the ordinary Iraqi has been liberated from a tyranical regime and now has the opportunity to use two of the most powerful nations on the planet to rebuild their once proud country into what they (the Iraqis) want it to be. They appear not to want to take up that opportunity. I feel this not only fr4om Press reports but from the views of people I have met who have recently returned from Iraq. I really hope that I am wrong.

As for the Furies, well it really doesent matter and in the (sober) light of day I really dont care where they are as long as they are restored and appreciated. I just think there is more chance of that happening if they were somewhere other than Iraq.

As for payment, I really dont think that is an issue, there are massive Oil reserves in Iraq that, when exploited for the benefit of the Iraqi people as all of the main parties in the conflict have said WILL happen will make any payment for an old wrecked plane pale into insignificance.

I really wish I hadnt replied to this thread now, repeat after me I will not post when drunk, I will not post when drunk……..

You didn’t pay, I didn’t pay; they did

Two drinking friends who are currenly walking with some difficulty and one very close school friend who isnt coming back. I haven’t paid personally, but I have been supporting people who have. What have you done?

I had spent days resisting the temptation to post however the bait of “not in my name” finally was too much. (I find that saying offensive). In someways I wish I hadnt, however I will exercise the right to free speech that was wone for me at such a dear cost by my forefathers, even if sometimes I **** it up.

That said in the overall scheme of things these aircraft dont matter much to a nation that really needs to start helping to rebuild itself and stop blaming others for conditions that have existed for years and not just a few months.

You have taken my posting about the situation in Iraq and replied with a diatribe about the whole Middle East Problem. I am quite happy to chew the cud with you about this, but not here. The presence of a couple of old wrecked aircraft at an old wrecked airfield will not have any impact of the outcome of that whatsoever.

I’m not an American. but I would be proud to be one should that ever happen. The Nation has its faults but is the second best on the Planet (after Great Britain of course)

I’m not going to fall out with anyone over this, too many people have done that already.

    Rant on

I’m sorry mate but this ceased to be a debate that I will take seriously when you used that emotive claptrap “not in my name”

Do I think they should be brought back – Yes

Do I think the Iraqi’s should be paid for them – No we have paid with 50 of our young men’s lives (this year)

Do I think the Iraqi’s care about them – No they care about nothing but themselves

Do I give a toss what they think – In this case no. And I’m sure they couldn’t give a toss either.

At the end of the day, these aircraft are a very unimportant piece if Iraqi history, the birthplace of civilization has lost more important things than a few planes. To us however they are more “important” we would appreciate them more.

They don’t seem to be able to appreciate their freedom and all that entails and seem to want everything handed to them on a plate.

Finally, Should they be kept in Iraqi markings – Yes.

    Rant Off

You have my deepest sympathies. If you could bottle the emotions shown in the first picture the world would be a better place.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us.

Is it me or is this becomming a more common occurance. At Kemble there were 2 aircraft that requested joining permission during the display because “we though we’d pop over for lunch”. Later on that afternoon a light twin flew over the airfield with no contcat with ATC, thankfully no flying going on at the time.

At Shuttleworth a few weeks back a glider was foating around the run in forcing the BBMF to divert around and cut out a flypast. and Ive lost count of the idiots who try to fly into Duxford during a display.

Dont these fools ever read NOTAMS?? The should throw the book at them.

I would go with the one that has the most chance of survival. the Beverley.

I really hope that I am wrong, but the Delta lady isnt going to fly.
