Between BoB and Red Tails there were two excellent ‘flying’ movies that come to mind ; Always and Air America.
Both used real aircraft and not CGI.
Looking back it appears to be a golden age that has now gone forever.

Always was made in 1989 and Air America 1990, CGI technology was very much in it’s infancy and only came to prominence in 1991 with Terminator 2 and was only succesful in that film due to it’s huge budget and the directors desire to push the technology to it’s limits.
A romantic drama remake (Always) and Action comedy (Air America) could only dream of T2’s budget.
I don’t know about Air America, but a big portion of the flying scenes in Always were actually achieved with large scale flying models rather than the real thing because of both budget and the ability of the director to obtain the shots he required more easily without having to worry about serviceability or weather restrictions.
Video of the dig here.

Great video.
There has been a bit of a surge in discovering underwater wrecks recently.
Are people activley seeking these out now that land potions are few & far between or is it just a result of the increase in sport diving ?
Either way, more power to them,
Oops – my bad. It should have been WPL #1629, nice catch.
I’ll try and upload a scan of the cover later today. Photobucket doesn’t want to load at the moment!
Ok here we go with the scan.

Been a while since anything new on this thread but just came across this on “the bay” and illustrates pFP7063’s point about this story being reprinted.

Nice video, lots of detail visible at full 1080 resolution. Some parts look clean & bright whilst others are full of holes, still, looks more sound than the Dornier 17 at first glance.
Hopefully that’s the case so that a recovery is practical as it’s too rare a type to be left to dissolve into the ocean.
With regard to any physical remains I personally would’nt have a problem with it being raised as it would enable the crew to be given a proper burial, however, if relatives are found and they object then that’s a different matter.
I don’t know about any new recoveries but i would dearly love to see the “Operation Harvest” documentry that was made a number of years ago about the various recoveries that have been made over the decades, but apparently it’s mired in copyright issues so remains locked away in a vault somewhere.:(
Ooops, sorry, link now showing correctly.
That sunset shot is fantastic, it captures visually what these two aeroplanes are all about, commemoration & remembrance.
If nothing else came out of this trip that one photo was worth it by itself.
I hope that you’ve forwarded it to the BBMF as they are looking for the best shot of the two Lancs together for use in their literature
Yes that was a real bonus when they taxied to the end of 06, real shame about the CWH Lanc not emulating it but i believe there was a “Flybee” flight waiting to land from what I overheard, still, nice blue skies this time, here’s hoping for more tomorrow as i also want one last chance to see the pair in action as the only other venue I may get to is Duxford in September but thats not definate yet due to work commitments.
Whilst I dont disagree with you about the media using these names, to be fair even the CWH crew refer to their Lanc as “Vera”, heard it myself yesterday when they were talking to the public at Southend.
Couple of good pics there Alan, where did you take them from ?
One of the Lanc’s now in the circuit, cant tell which just saw the belly as it turned away from my place.
About 10 minutes ago I was treated to my own personal display by the two BBMF Spits.
They looked they they had just taken off from Southend, they stooged around at low level over Leigh for a couple of minutes passing directly over my house on several occasions before heading off towards the east.
No crowds, or lawn mowers, just the sound of a Griffon & a Merlin working in harmony, lovely.
Are the airport going to allow any sort of photographic oppotunity during the vist for Clacton or is it a case of “hanging around” the perimeter during arrivals & departures ?
I have tried to find out from the airport direct but so far no joy.
If anyone can recommend a good Halifax (I do like Taylor’s The Hard Way Home) and Far East Beaufighter print, I would be most grateful.
Do a Google search on “Ivan Berryman Halifax”, he’s painted a few images, my favourite being “Friday the 13th”
