Well, that’s the real problem isn’t it? While speed limits aren’t exactly arbitrary they are somewhat ‘nominal’ and just because you aren’t speeding it doesn’t mean you are safe. I like to think that I’ve enough skill and experience to judge when to exceed the speed limit safely…

I have the ‘nagger’ in my car set at 97 mph.

It is amazing how frequently it triggers during overtakes.

They certainly wouldn’t have been the large spherical mines with ‘contact’ horns (and a heavy ‘sinker’ to moor them to the seabed). They’d have been cylindrical, most would have had a parachute and I’m sure most would have been ‘magnetic’ mines (set off by the influence of a steel ship passing close by).

And pray that you never, ever get caught out in the middle of an overtake with the need to get past sharply. 😮

The device I had in mind would operate in a similar way to my existing cruise-control (which I almost never use) in that I could switch it on/off and that I could select the speed (I’d have to do that anyway) that I’d be limited to so I’d be unlikely to ever be in the position you suggest (and you should always be able to brake out of trouble).

The only real problem is that my car would need a ‘radar’ speed sensor because currently cruise-control switches off when you change gear and I’d want to use it mainly in 30mph or 40mph limits when there are lots of hazards to look for and when I’m also changing gear a lot.

Cameras are easy, cheap and contribute little or nothing to road safety…

That’s the real problem, like most government thinking…..it is ‘safety’ on the cheap!

Ironically I’d like to see more Police making our roads safer, and I say that as a habitual speeder. Speed cameras don’t catch people who falsify their DVLA details, they can’t help with traffic or first-aid when there is an accident and they aren’t much use if somebody is breaking into my house one night!

I’m not sure that ‘blanket’ 30mph (or even 20mph) speed camera coverage in urban areas is such a good idea; isn’t it more important that drivers look where they are going rather than have to concentrate on the speedometer?

Cruise-control is fine so long as the traffic continues to move at exactly the speed limit but that rarely happens in a 30mph limit and constantly re-engaging cruise-control will distract driver attention more from the most important job of actually concentrating on driving the car, anticipating problems and avoiding them!

What I really want on my car is a speed limiter so than no matter what I do with the accelerator my car cannot break the speed limit. The annoying thing is that all the technology to do this is already built into my vehicle and it would only take a minor ‘software’ modification to the cruise-control.

Suggesting that speed-cameras are there to generate revenue is a red-herring; the money generated from them is insignificant compared to the other taxes on the motorist, primarily fuel duty (and then VAT on the duty).
