Possibly, there seems to have been a certain amount of ‘recycling’ of eye-witness statements from previous documentaries such as the Coventry Blitz and the one about the bombing around Saint Paul’s Cathedral but I don’t suppose they represented much actual screen-time. No bad thing I suppose if these accounts reach a wider audience.
The only large bearing that I have from a Merlin engine is a bearing from the propeller reduction pinion which is made by ‘HOFFMANN’.
I have another bearing from a ROTOL propeller that I believe (due to a patent number marked on it) is made by BRITISH TIMKEN.
Curiously a propeller shaft bearing that I have from a later war Bf109G is not marked in any way that I can see and with the chances of intact bearings falling into enemy hands was this perhaps an attempt to hide the location of bearing production centres?
Overall I would think it was quite risky from a strategic point of view to have a single manufacturer for the total supply of a particular bearing for a particular engine due to the danger of enemy action interrupting supplies (which was certainly attempted by the allies).
What sort of bearings are they (ball, roller, taper) and what size?
I don’t know of any Ransome and Marles bearings used in propellers but I have some that were used in Bristol Hercules engines.

Excellent comparison photographs! Presumably the Bf110 in question dived into the ground and the force of the impact tore out the propeller blades, breaking off these fragments in the process.

I think the large object tracking up the screen just before impact is actually the target – the missile is the small blob. Strange camera angle.
Ah yes, I see it now. 😮 I had assumed that because the missile was too small to see clearly that the film had been ‘doctored’ to show something intercepting (rather than a drone just exploding). As you say strange camera angle, or rather strange film orientation (the target and missile appear to swap places)!

This footage was used during ‘The World at War’ series and was quite terrifying when I thought that there may be crew aboard; I was very relieved years later when I found out it was an unmanned drone!

I stand corrected. But I’d love to know ‘the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’. I suppose if you’ve been arrested for stealing and then crashing a valuable military aircraft in wartime the ‘attempting to kill Hitler defence’ is a good as any in court!

In 1991 the government launched its first £1 million TV ad campaign centred on the dangers of speeding (“Kill your speed, not a child”). In 1992 the police were given a new weapon when the first speed cameras were installed in west London.
By September 1994 government spending on TV ads was running at £2.7 million a year, now centred on the slogan that was to become familiar: “Speed kills”. In 1997 the yearly advertising budget reached £3.5 million. Cameras were now proliferating the length and breadth of the land. Police patrols, except on motorways, were being reduced. In 1999, as income from penalties for offences recorded by cameras soared towards £100 million a year…
The government…..would now take action, with a strategy that “will focus especially on speed”. A DfT strategy paper claimed speed was “a major contributory factor in about a third of all road accidents”. The “excessive and inappropriate speed” that helped “to kill about 1,200 people” each year was “far more than any other single contributor to casualties on our roads”.
The source given for this claim, to be repeated as a mantra by ministers and officials for years to come, was a report from the government’s Transport Research Laboratory, TRL Report 323: “A new system for recording contributory factors in road accidents”.
Not many people would have looked at this report, since it was only available for £45. But some who did were amazed. The evidence the report had cited to support its claim that speed was “a major contributory factor in about a third of all road accidents” simply wasn’t there. Many other factors were named as contributing to road accidents, from driving without due care and attention to the influence of drink; from poor overtaking to nodding off at the wheel. But the figure given for accidents in which the main causative factor was “excessive speed” was way down the list, at only 7.3 per cent.
