No, it’s exactly the same thing.

    No, it isn’t.

The law should be the same for everyone, no excuses, no exceptions.

    I agree.

You can’t really criticise some (not all) Sikhs for not wanting to obey one law while you’re happy to flout another.

I’m not, I’m criticising the law for making exceptions based on the religious choice of individuals.

But along the line somewhere, Sikhs must have argued that their wish to ride a motorcycle (and not break the law) was more important that a law without exceptions.

Whether you pay the fines or not is beside the point.

No it isn’t, the law still applies to me in exactly the same way as everybody else…..no exceptions.

You didn’t answer my question. Would you be happy if because of my religion I didn’t have to obey the speed limit?

Our Harrier crews carried shoulder holstered FN 9mm’s.

But during the Falklands conflict the pilots from HMS Invincible were forced to design their own shoulder holster for the 9mm which was then put into production by the on-board Chinese laundry/tailoring shop.

The pilots were also under no illusions about the effectiveness of the 9mm as a weapon but thought that if they ended up in their dingy it may be of some use…..against a shark!

The same can, of course, be said of people who think that speed limits apply to everyone else on the road and/or that it’s perfectly OK for them to drive and use their mobile phone at the same time.

I doubt that all of these people are Sikhs. 🙂

Not the same thing at all.

People who speed (like me) are breaking the law; when I get caught I pay the fine and take the points.

If however because of my religious beliefs I was exempt from obeying the speed limit would you be happy?

Sikh soldiers serving with the British Army in both World Wars commonly wore turbans in preference to a steel helmet…

I didn’t word my post very well; I wasn’t actually questioning the beliefs of Sikhs.

I was however suggesting that the wish of some Sikhs to ride a motorcycle was greater than their wish to respect the (then existing) law of the land.

IMHO some very harsh comments have been posted. For those of you speculating about the cause, or causes, of the latest engine problems it might be nice if you gave the Sally B engineering team the benefit of the doubt when evaluating their competence.

    See: http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roads/vehicles/vssafety/motorcyclehelmetsvisorsandgo4563?page=2

“If you are driving or riding on a 2-wheeled motorcycle on a road you must wear a helmet. Passengers in a sidecar don’t have to wear a helmet and neither does a Sikh who is wearing a turban.”

That one always amused me…..if Sikhs beliefs were that strong…

…couldn’t they just not ride a motorcycle? :diablo:

Surely you mean Bacon & Mushroom?

    Oh, yes!

Lightly toasted white bread, not-too-crispy bacon, sliced mushrooms, touch of Colman’s English mustard and ground garlic pepper.

    Damn it…..I’m suddenly starving! :diablo:

Secondly, I was very angry at the housemate Marcus…

I find the whole concept of Big Brother offensive; but apparently it is popular with those who have nothing better to do. Trust me, you are far too intelligent to be concerning yourself with anything that is arranged to ‘happen’ on Big Brother.

At least one non-prod pitched up at Stanley. Unfortunately one of The Times defence correspondents was at Stanley. He asked “How did that get here?”. OC Ops and the MoD PR Minder looked at each other! The Met Man said “Favourable winds”.

I wonder who that quick-thinking Met Man was?

How did it get there? Via Antarctica…..or somewhere not so chilly? 😉

How many Hercules C1K conversions were there, five or six? Six, then.

    XV187 – Scrapped Lockheed
    XV201 – Scrapped Marshalls of Cambride 14/05/2009
XV203 – Sold to Sri Lanka as CR-880
    XV204 –
XV213 – Sold to Sri Lanka as CR-881
    XV296 – Scrapped Marshalls of Cambride ??/07/2003

I didn’t realise also that virtually all the ex-RAF Hercules returned to Lockheed had been scrapped. 🙁

Edit: Question answered before I’d even asked it!

You may well be thinking about the C1s that were modded as tankers, with probes for the Falklands. They were retired /scrapped/resurrected and a couple were sold to Austria or Sri Lanka after refurbishment at Marshalls. These were XV187/201/203/204/213/296,and I dropped 213 off at Cambridge on 30/03/96…

To quote B-52 pilot Major T. J. Kong from the movie ‘Dr Strangelove’:

“Survival kit contents check. In them you’ll find: one forty-five caliber automatic; two boxes of ammunition; four days’ concentrated emergency rations; one drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills; one miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible; one hundred dollars in roubles; one hundred dollars in gold; nine packs of chewing gum; one issue of prophylactics; three lipsticks; three pair of nylon stockings.

Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff!” 😀

Don’t know if such an opportunity has ever taken place.

In the Schweinfurt-Regensburg book by Martin Middlebrook a B-17 pilot is mentioned as carrying a pistol and being determined to fight it out should he be forced to bale-out over Germany.

As it happened he was forced to bale-out on this mission and was killed on the ground in exactly those circumstances. German casualties are not mentioned.
