While I think that there probably are cases where torture could be ‘effective’, in the vast majority of cases I think it does more harm than good. Has the intelligence gained through Guantánamo Bay been worth the negative effect of having a centre for torture? Almost certainly not. Would the conviction of a few criminals be worth the damage to the reputation of the Police? No.
But I do think that, in Britain at least, the criminal justice system has swung far too far in favour of the criminal. It is now just far too difficult, and too expensive, to convict the guilty, and when they are convicted too expensive, it seems, to actually keep them locked up.
And really that’s what it comes down to in the end – money.
No, I don’t want to infringe anybody’s human rights but I’d much rather live in a society where the state knew who was in the country, who everybody was, where my DNA was kept on file and where if I was suspected of a crime I could be kept under surveillance, my phone could be tapped, my e-mail opened and under interrogation I could be given a ‘truth serum’ (should such a thing be developed).
Why? Because I’ve got nothing to hide…
…and because while I don’t like any of those things I’d be prepared to accept them if it meant that my house was less likely to be burgled, or my car stolen or that I (or my family) would be less likely to get blown-up in a bus, or shot during a robbery, or stabbed for ‘disrespecting’ somebody!
I wonder if a genuine ‘truth serum’ is within the reach of modern medical science.
If it were, would we be happy to see it used in serious criminal cases, or would its use constitute torture?

Yes, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that it is part of the anti-icing system that channelled air, heated by the exhaust of the DB601/Jumo211 engines, along the leading edge of the wings…
…but I still can’t figure out which way round it would be fitted.
Tenor Sax !
Very good. 😀
The joints between the different bits of it don’t look like they are designed to keep coolant in…..they look more like flexible expansion joints in an exhaust system to me…
…I just can’t imagine where they would fit the exhaust system of a Jumo 211 engine…..possibly cabin heating or anti-icing systems?
Interesting chair for the office…
…and a Hurricane project than needs a bit of work!

It would be nice to hear what they sounded like.
This is probably pretty close! 😀
I’m no doubting you’re correct, but how can you say Packard Merlin from that picture?
Lovely. 🙂
Yes, exactly my thoughts, the Royal Navy seems to have had a policy of ‘shoot first, ask questions later’ when it came to aircraft identification…..I think I’d go by boat! 😀
Possibly the intention was to operate this aircraft from the beach at low tide…
…after a strip had been cleared of anti-landing-craft obstacles and mines! 😉
Is it one of those launch/recover off a wire things?
(Edit: No, clearly not!)
In an ideal world I’d love to save the Lyneham Comet but I don’t think the RAF is badly represented so far:
XM823 Comet 1XB G-APAS Museum Cosford, Shropshire
XR398 Comet C4 G-BDIW Museum Hermeskeil, Germany
XR399 Comet C4 G-BDIX Museum East Fortune, East Lothian, Scotland
XS235 Comet 4C G-CPDA Preserved Bruntingthorpe, Leicestershire
Now I call that pretty good by any standards, four genuine RAF airframes in secure locations (one in taxiable condition).
However, two of these aircraft are stored outside and their long-term future can only be assured by bringing them under cover so rather than try to save another unique but poor condition example wouldn’t the better long-term view be to truly secure those with a better chance?
Regards Cosford – it is the RAF museum and ultimately the remit of portraying the RAF should come before preserving test and trials aircraft.
But the Cosford collection does specialise in displaying RAF test and trials aircraft (and missiles) so Comet XM823 fits the collection perfectly.
Wouldn’t Le Bourget be interested in the Cosford Comet as its ex Air France, thereby freeing up space for the Lyneham Comet?
Oh, and b*ll*cks to the French…..they can’t have it! 😀
…there are other appropriate places, though maybe not as relevant.
The fat lady aint singing yet…..
(Sorry, deleted my post while trying to edit it.)
Yes, agreed, but for the long-term future of all the Comets (including the RAF C4 at East Fortune) wouldn’t it be better to try and get all those in museums under cover now than move one more (poor condition example) to a different outdoor storage?
