…but the fact is, the religious don’t ask the question “is there a God” because without God there is no religion.

Funny that…..maybe they know something we don’t…..or rather, something we aren’t supposed to find out! 😉

I did not refer to denial of the existence of religion: that would be patently stupid.

    Of course…..I just couldn’t resist the cheap-shot! Sorry. 😮

That’s quite an interesting opinion, but I haven’t seen anyone here express it apart from yourself.

I must be wrong then…..because as we all know, the more people who believe in something the more likely it is to be true. 🙂

Is it? How can you deny the existence of religion? It exists, and I can prove it!

The existence of deities can be denied however, because nobody can prove they exist!

So religion, any religion, boils down to one question ‘is there a god (or gods)?’ and no amount of dogma, books, tradition, history, temples, ceremony, government support or celebrity endorsement can change that.

I suppose the answer to that is probably yes, and no.

If the greater danger was collision with ‘friendly’ aircraft I think navigation lights would have been used…

…and if the greater danger was enemy ‘intruder’ night-fighters then almost certainly not!

I think statistically mid-air collisions between bombers were far more common around airfields during take-off and landing than along the route of the bomber stream or at the target. Or maybe it is just the case that it seemed that way since many bombers ‘lost-without-trace’ could have been the result of collisions.

Interestingly, considering the original post (and the welcome contribution of a B-17 navigator), mid-air collisions were not that uncommon amongst daylight bombers flying in tight formation or during forming-up or landing. Casualties from bombs falling from above and 50 calibre fire from other bombers was also not unknown.

No. Christianity is quite clearly a belief system. One among many, as you clearly recognise.

It has definable dogma, tenets and practices arising from specific supernatural claims, and sets out a moral and ethical code that believers should follow.

Atheism, on the other hand, has none of these. It can be defined in full by the simple statement: ‘There are no gods’.

OK, but without god (or gods) what have you got?

Everything else relies upon that one assumption with the exception of morals and, despite what some followers of religion think, it is possible to live by a moral code without a ‘recognised’ religion.

So I’d say that atheism is as much a religion as any other on planet.

…the Mosquito, the aircraft that finally won the Air War for us.

The Mosquito? An interesting choice especially for B-17 crew (pilot?).

I would have assumed that the P-51 made the difference between winning and losing the daylight bombing war.

Many thanks for all the responses…..there is a reason but it certainly isn’t a simple one! 🙂

Pure faith in mathematics and statistics got those aircraft there and back. What an amazing thought!

I remember reading that gunners used to “test-fire” their guns over the channel, so they were ready for crossing the coast.

Is there any truth in this and how could they avoid shooting each other, when flying 1000 ships in “close” proximity?

I think test-firing of guns was standard practice and again it was simply the case that there probably wasn’t another aircraft in the way.

The same logic was applied to bombers being hit by bombs dropped from above although it wasn’t really ‘faith’ in mathematics but quite the opposite.

Referring to my earlier post for 1000 bombers spread over 125km (or twenty minutes flying time), statistically over 99% of bombers should be over 1000m behind (or in front of) any rear-gunner testing his guns!

It can be argued that atheism is a religious stance…

Yes, I can live with that…..possibly.

Does that make Christianity (for example) a stance also?

I respect your right to follow your religious beliefs but I’m appalled that you think that gives you the right to describe other religious beliefs in the way that you have.

I think atheism is another form of religion; though it be illegitimate; it essentially is the worship of oneself. Atheism is selfishness and shallowness.

Whether you choose to do [God’s] will or not is whether you choose the path of good or evil.

It would not be tolerated to say such things about Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists or Jews so why do you think it is acceptable to say it about Atheists?

IMAO I find Richard Dawkins to be quite hateful, selfish, shallow minded and ignorant..

I don’t really know (or care) who Richard Dawkins is or what he believes in (or not).

This is some excerpts from previous posts at other places; including some other individuals comments…

I’m afraid I didn’t read your other post, I don’t know who you are quoting (as the quotes are not credited) but it wasn’t me.
