Possibly this is to allow better access to the interior (a bit like the X-craft at Duxford but on a much larger scale).
Although U-543 is ‘complete’ her actual condition is quite poor but that doesn’t detract from the impact of her as an exhibit in my opinion…
…and there are no better u-boats to be had…anywhere!
Last time I was there (on a flying visit) I had a quick look at the Supermarine S6B and remember thinking (or rather not thinking) what a nice replica they had of the Schneider Trophy…..Doh!! 😀
Howeverwhat I had in mind when I asked the question was more er traditional aircraft carriers that might be within safe diving depth.

I can only think of HMS Ark Royal and USS Yorktown as carriers that have been found and photographed underwater but both are too deep for sport diving.
I think it is possible to dive HMS/M M2 but that wasn’t what you wanted. 🙂

U-534 was sunk on 5th May 1945 by RAF Liberator VIII serial KH347 coded ‘G’ of 86 Squadron.
Three u-boats were picked up at four-and-a-half miles on the surface (on radar). A Liberator (‘E’/547) of 547 Squadron made two unsuccessful attacks and was shot–down into the sea with only one survivor.
As the other u-boats dived Liberator KH347 attacked the third with six depth-charges. Strong flak was encountered ant the depth-charges overshot. With the flak subdued by the front and rear gunners a second attack was made with four depth-charges. One of these depth-charges landed on the rear deck of the u-boat and rolled into the sea where it exploded directly under the stern.
The u-boat sank rapidly by the stern but all 52 crew were able to get clear (although three later died of exposure).
The crew of Liberator KH347 were:

Ok so why don’t we petiton IWM to take it on Manchester or Duxford (I know Cambridgeshire is about as far from the Atlantic as a big museum gets, but it would look superb next to the Sunderland)
If you mean U-534 of the Warship Preservation Trust then I’m afraid the IWM is a bit late.
U-534 was purchased by Merseytravel in June 2007 who plan to use it as a tourist attraction at Woodside. Unfortunately this plan also means that the u-boat will be cut into three sections. Not sure if this is necessary for transportation or for display purpose.
Apparently the cutting into three was supposed to start in September 2007. Any forumites local enough to go and see?
Anyway you’d never have got it to Duxford – it is far too big to move overland!

Interesting that it is the County Council that are looking into recovering such large historic artefacts from the seabed.

The larger drawings are clearly 4000lb and 8000lb ‘cookie’ HC (high capacity) bombs.
The first use of the 4000lb was in April 1941 and the first use of the 8000lb was in September 1942.

Had another (all too brief) chat today with that friend of mine who used to test the Blue Streak RZ2 engines at Spadeadam.
One thing I hadn’t realised is that the testing was being done on engines that were intended for the launch vehicles. I’d assumed, quite wrongly, that the RZ2 engines were a ‘one-shot’ deal and that once used they would require an extensive rebuild. Not so.
It seems that the purpose of most of the tests (on single engines) was ‘trimming’ the individual engines. This consisted of measuring the thrust and then bringing that thrust within the design limits. The method for doing this was by placing an ‘orifice’ of an appropriate size between the turbo-fuel-pump and the thrust-chamber to ‘throttle’ the engine!
Also apparently all tests were of three minutes duration; the maximum duration of the engine burn between launch and fuel exhaustion.
It is my opinion (for what it is worth) that a continual, concentrated effort by a fleet of over 1000 aircraft could have created an accumulative effect that would have seriously disabled the overall U-Boat effort.

Where we disagree is the strategy these 1000 aircraft should use.
Question 1: Did they flew always straight to the target or had they a sort of flightplan (to avoid flak etc.)? Because the crashsite isn’t inline with Snaith and Bremen.
It depends on a number of factors but it is highly probable that the route was not direct. ‘Dog-leg’ courses would be flown to avoid flak (as you say) but also to avoid giving away the target before the attack began. Earlier in the war crews were I believe, free to set their own route and timings, later the ‘bomber stream’ proper was developed.
Of course they could have been lost; bombers could be routinely tens-of-kilometres off track. Or they could have been pushed off track by the weather or by some technical malfunction.
Question 2: Is it possible that they hit the Wellington by flak (it was shot down by flak), some pieces fell down on our spot and the rest of the Wellington fell down a couple of kilometers further?
If a bomber broke up in mid-air at an operational height 15,000ft say, parts of the wreckage could easily come down several kilometres apart.
This is nice…if a little pricey! 🙂
