WW2 was total war – a fight to the finish. Trying to single out events in any other context today is somewhat immoral and very disrepectful to the participants who were after all doing what their political and military masters thought was the correct thing given the then known intelligence picture etc. Revisionists and apologists do nothing 60 years later. It’s a bit like reviewing one’s on life todate. No matter what has happened in the past, you can’t change it.

You would not go to all of the trouble to remove an engine and the nacelle to fly the thing with three engines. That would be big work. Bring in another engine much easier. I would suggest that it might be a squadron taxying hack…
